Grounds Activities

Location: Located in north eastern Pennsylvania the Pocono Mountains have become an incredibly popular vacation and retirement area for the north eastern white collar population. The largest attraction being the incredibly colorful autumns.

Weather: Weather is absolutely perfect in the Poconos for vacationing to cool summers, colorful falls, and snow skiing in the winter. Wind primarily blows from the North West, however with the Resort being close to the body of water which is Little Teedyuskung, a breeze from the lake is a possibility. Rain is usually light and drizzly on occasion with thunderstorms during the warmer summer months.

The Pocono Mountains

The amount of sun which enters the interior of the building will determine what the function of certain spaces will be. Much morning and even sun appears from the south of the building making for wonderful sun scenes, while the north is often shaded with a cool breeze coming from the lake. Glare will also play a large part in where the sun is coming from.

Others The goal of the east wing will be to serve as a spa and a social area where one can reconnect with their inner being. Instead of a traditional spa experience where one is focused on themselves, users will relax while being in the company of new friends in an area oriented for conversation and different experiences. On the second floor a bistro and night club allow for a traditional social scene.

SelfRooms will be designed away from the areas of activity, remaining small and secluded. This is so guests will have their own secluded getaway from the rest of the social oriented resort to gather themselves and recharge from days of making new friends and acquaintances.

CompanionThe center of the resort only makes sense to contain the center focus of the resort as a whole, to find a companion. Formal and casual eating along with an area for cooking classes allows for a chance to get to know others on a deeper level.

18 191 East Area Views

Design Process and FocusThermal SpaThe Thermal Spa will be one of the biggest features in the spa allowing for a secluded, intimate setting for newly made friends and possible partners.

East Wing HallThe East Wing Hall will serve as an area in which guest will gather and wait for their newly made friends and companions while enjoying the foot bath or drinks at the bar.

Locker RoomsLocker Rooms will provide a space to prepare themselves to be fully immersed in the social spa atmosphere, social yoga, or simply to enjoy the pool with others.

Joined SaunaThe Sauna will be connected to both locker rooms not only to allow for a restful moment before leaving the locker room, but will also serve as a secluded place to relax with both sexes.

Yoga StudioA Yoga Studio will serve as a place in which guests will be able to meditate together or practice group, or couples yoga in a large open area.

Spa Reception The Spa Reception area will serve as a space for guests to wait for others or simply wait for an opening in the massage, pedicure, or manicure areas.

Pedicure, Manicure, MassageThe full service spa will allow for another option rather than going to the Thermal Spa. Instead retreating to a dark cozy secluded area the spa will allow for a brighter more uplifting spa experience.

Pool Lounge AreaThe Pool area is a place for a more casual meeting. Based around the pool and near the bar, a social area of large daybeds and lounge chairs creates an space where one can socialize and be immersed in the natural context through large windows surrounding the pool.

Sketch Ideas

Thermal Bath ElementInspired by the concept of dropping away and dropping in, the motif of water dropping away has inspired this center element in the spa’s Thermal Bath. The base serves as a circular bar while the center contains a gas fire pit. This will allow for a center focus of the room for conversation as well as a space to congregate around.

Pool lounge AreaTo create a casual, stereotypical space which people are used to for socializing, a traditional pool lounge will be used fulfill this need. However to add another layer of social activity, large daybed like padded platforms will be used to create a space in which people can sit together on the same level comfortably when not in the pool.

Seating CirclesSeating spaces are incredibly important in a social environment to stimulate conversation and socializing. Angles and circles help with conversation while centers, such as fireplaces create conversation topics or can focus ones attention during conversation gaps.

Yoga StudioFor the purposes of creating a space in which people can exercise and be active a Yoga Studio will be implemented not only to be peaceful in the scenic landscape, but also to provide a large, open area ideal for group and couple’s yoga. Yoga is also a popular exercise for the age range which is the target customer.

TransitionGood spa design is about making sure the guest feels as if they are being transported to a place of relaxation and tranquility away from the rest of the world. In order to do this there needs to be a form of transition from the outside world into a social place of relaxation.

Main Hall Foot PoolWhile guests are waiting for their newly found friends and acquaintances, they need a place to wait for others while preparing for their immersion into the spa. A solution to this waiting problem is a water feature in which guests can interact. A foot pool will be designed as a bench around a pool with a profile to invite guests to dip their feet in.

Spa DivisionTo keep the spa, as a whole, a social area there are no real divides, only transitions. However their needs to be an element to divide the spa and its different functions to keep it from being simply a large gallery. These half moon divides will allow for an element of subtle privacy between services while grouping guests together who are going under the same service.

CirculationPath• Upon entering the East Wing from the rest of the hotel, guests will experience a

transition through a visual divide introducing them to the visual aesthetic and materiality of the Spa.

• On the left immediately after entering, are the locker rooms serving as a place to prepare for the social experience which is the East Wing, while also allowing for pre-mingling in the adjoining sauna.

• Continuing on the left is the Yoga Studio geared to the idea of social exercise and relaxation for those who enjoy to practice yoga in groups or couples. This allows for a form of indoor exercise to offset the outdoor exercising opportunities.

• Crossing the lobby from the North to the South will serve as a place to wait for others to join in the spa or pool allowing for some entertainment with the foot bath fountain the lobby center.

• The Spa will serve as a place of two options. Guests will have the option of entering a thermal bath with a dark, more secluded atmosphere, or going into a light and uplifting spa space with traditional manicure, pedicure, and massage services in a social setting.

• At the end of the East Wing is the indoor pool which guests can either use after their spa experience or go to directly as place to socialize.

Main HallThe Ceiling of the Main Hall will contain of a concave curved ceiling with led strips hidden behind a ridge along with the HVAC. Portals to other spaces will be overhangs with metallic inserts lit by hidden lighting. The Bar will be illuminated by Iris lighting hanging from a multi layered system of white porcelain finished fiberglass.

Main Hall TransitionThe Main Hall Transition will consist of an introduction of the aesthetic feel which the spa aspires too. Elements of copper, wood, and motifs will allow for foreshadowing of what kind of space the guests are entering into.

Pool LoungePool Lounge will be exposed to structure with HVAC at the height of the second level, however along the pillars there will be wood structures to support lantern like lighting.

Thermal BathThe Thermal Bath will consist of a ceiling constructed from outdoor fabric resembling dark linen with aesthetic installations and lighting while a second ceiling, exposed along the edge will provide HVAC and other mechanical elements.

Color palette

Contextual Color PaletteGenerically speaking, when people travel for leisure, they travel to a destination to experience this destination. One wouldn’t travel to Paris to experience a safari, so it makes sense that the most successful hotels and resorts reflect their context in their interiors. For this reason the Woodloch Social carries the context of the Pocono Mountains throughout its spaces. Not only do these color traits keep guests feeling as if they are still in the Poconos, but also keep to a calming, natural palette of taupes and gentle tones. Instead of using color to highlight elements textures and patterns will be used to highlight elements.

28 29

Detail Drawings

Poolside Daybed SeatingSeating in the pool lounge will allow for guests to relax as if they were all at sitting on the floor together. The luxurious synthetic leather will give the feel of luxury while there is enough space for a group to lounge with drinks or small plates.

Main Hall BarPositioned in the Main Hall Between both the pool and the spa elements, this bar will serve as a center point for people to gather and bring drinks to wherever they are. By placing the bar in the Main Hall people will have a chance to leave the social situations they may be in to gather themselves.

Spa Bath BanquetteThe Spa Bath has a specialty designed profile for a variety of reasons. Not only is a flat pool seat uncomfortable, but also forces one to sit upright and not sit leisurely. For this reason the seat is lowered with the knees rising so one can sit back and relax. The end of the seat also curls up for those who wish to only be partially submerged in case they need to cool off. Lighting is below the seating so the water appears to glow and a shelf behind will be above water level to place drinks.

Spa PartitionsThe idea of keeping the full service area of the spa social dividers cannot be fully blocking, but rather suggestive of dividing space. Instead of completely blocking off different areas, these half moon partitions will create a small level of privacy while still retaining a level of light openness to the space.

32 33

Furniture and Lighting Thermal Bath Transition

Slip Resistant Flooring

Wall finish change to communicate transition. Warm lighting to create a

certain ambiance for a more sensual experience.

Towel rack for ease of use and to eliminate tripping hazards.

This transition from Spa Reception is made by the choice to go into a darker, more sensual form of relaxation in the form of a thermal bath.

34 35

Fireplace element to create conversation and focus.

Banquette shelf for drinks and small plates during bath-ing and socializing.

Highlighted featured to orient a guest in low lit places.

Elegant railings for ease to get in and out of pool.

Thermal Bath The Thermal Bath is a part of the Spa in which guests will experience a level of deeper, more sensual social relaxation.

Overhangs to show transition to other spa areas.

Wide glass doors to show hi-erarchy of spaces.

Installation to communicate concept motif along with vi-sual of relieving tension for others to gather around.

Open foot pool to prepare for spa or obtain focus while waiting for others.

High concave and lit ceilings to convey height and open illusion.

Main Hall The Main Hall is a place for waiting for others and preparing for a social journey away from normal, stressful life.

36 37

Ceiling drop to show change of space. Texture change to show separate function.

More lighting to highlight area.

Paneled bar to continue coherent aesthetic.

Limited seating to encourage use of other spa facilities.

Main Hall Bar Main Hall Transition The ceiling of the Main Hall Transition communicates a change of purpose for the hotel. It signals to guests that they are now entering another wing of the Woodloch Social focused on social relaxation. The elements in this transition provide a foreshadowing of the warm and re-vealing motifs, colors and textures which await them.

38 39

Main Hall Wall Feature The Main Hall Wall Feature, also appearing in the Yoga Studio brings the elements and silhouettes of the outdoors into the East Wing to provide a sense of context.

Locker Rooms The Locker Rooms are a place to change and become ready for a spa experience, or simply enjoy the other hotel amenities.

Custom lighting is used to create shadows highlighting the idea of transformation of self.

Mirrors are better lit so others can prepare face before meeting new acquaintances.

40 41

Adjoining Sauna An adjoining Sauna between the separate Locker Rooms is used to encourage mingling between the sexes before or after having a spa experience or enjoying other hotel amenities.

Yoga Studio Facing North The Yoga studio is a space in which guests will enjoy relaxing exercise or meditation to prepare or unwind from life. Group yoga is encouraged by the large open spaces.

Large North facing windows allow for indirect natural light to enter the studio along with a view of the lake.

Water and sand elements are placed to evoke tranquility and nature into a spiritual exercise.

Floor detail is used to create a focus of thought and spirit.

Leather flooring creates a perfect bal-ance between natural elements, soft surfaces, and easy to clean materials.

42 43

Yoga Studio Facing South

A two layered ceiling is used to hide mechanical aspects, while large fabric sheers are used to trap sound.

Open storage is useful in a Yoga Studio for the many tools one may need for exercise.

The Pocono Wall Feature reappears from the Main Hall to give a sense of place.

Spa Service Areas If a guest chooses to venture to the Spa Service Areas they are greeted by a light, open atmosphere with much natural light and neutral finishes.

Half Moon Partitions are used to allow a sense of separation between different parts of the spa as well as a suggested amount of privacy.

Above the nail drying area is a ceiling drop of different material to highlight a separate function of space.

Instead of a traditional long table of nail drying stations, nail drying will become a social event.

44 45

Spa Reception

Small sitting areas are highlighted with feature lighting as well as drop ceilings for a more comfortable setting.

An elegant and simple waiting area is provided with Spa Reception while guests wait for an opening or others to join them.

A table in the center of reception will be used for towels, lotions and other needs that guests may have. This table is highlighted by light and other elements to convey the amount of service the Woodloch Social provides.

Pool Lounge An open and naturally lit indoor pool will provide a more customary and relaxed setting for guests to socialize.

A corner table will be provided for the use and disposal of towels.

Daybed like custom seating will be provided for another setting of socializing by guests.
