“‘Not only is the Universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we can think’

J.B.S. Haldane

One can never learn everything. A mind, however bril-liant, will never be able to fully understand all there is to know, but to have tried to learn, to have attempted to understand as much as one possibly could of our vast universe, is the greatest thing we can ever do. It is perhaps the greatest gift you can give yourself – to have tried.

The more we can understand of the world around us, the more we understand ourselves, and thus realise what connects the two. Learning is the search for the depths of the soul and the universe.”

The Aims of the Architecture

6

A learning community focused around nature whilst being immersed within a natural landscape. It will bring together a diverse group of people, and simultaneously allow for social and individual learning.

The intention of the institution is to foster both individual and social learning. It is important that there should be no formal curriculum and that the learning would be self-di-rected. To achieve this, individual learning will grow around crafts, whilst the social learning will come from care for com-munal gardens. The gardens will also be the main source for sustenance. The activity of the institution will change with the season, being most populated and active in mid-summer.

The students will be from all different backgrounds and disciplines, with a backbone of skilled crafts-people to sup-port individual learning. The crafts people will be given a dedicated studio space, to customise according to their dis-cipline for the duration of their residency. Those there for shorter periods will be able to work alongside them, but will also have a variety of different communal studio spaces and facilities to be self-directed and explore their own interests. It will allow for cross fertilisation of Ideas and disciplines.Social learning will be through the care of the communal gar-den, which all the students will rely on for food. It will help to reconnect them with nature by interacting with plants by caring for them, and to give an understanding of the origin of natural food.

The architecture will act as a framework to allow both nature and people to grow and develop. It will create a bal-ance with nature and the surrounding environment, and will respond to the seasons.

It will connect with the existing building to create a new series of spaces. It will create an engaging and comfortable space for the users of the institution, for flexible use.

The building will be environmentally responsible in its use of materials and construction, as well as in the energy need-ed to run the building.
