Central AvenueFall 2015This semester focused on the revitalization of the area surrounding Bethany Park & Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. With a focus on engaging the community, we first started with speaking to residents and community stakeholders. This included participating in the Central Avenue Parade where we asked local people to respond to questions about their lives as well as hosting a BBQ at a neighborhood garden. Being able to connect with these people gave us insight as to what the community had a need for and how we could problem solve using out skills in design.

Page 9: Portfolio - Spring 2016

We had the ability to pick our own sites and working with two others, we decided to joint venture and redevelop the south side of Central Avenue between 17th & 18th. Being on the corner of 17th, which is a corridor to the highway, I wanted to have a form that showed the collision of the two streets and how a space could improve this corner. Through iterations, I found a form that had a void which allowed a courtyard to take place which included garden space, and community activity rooms. On the main floor was my program which was providing an incubation space for small community food businesses. This space has three small shops where tenants can have street front, readily accessible space and can grow their business skill sets. In the center of the floor plan is a common space where demonstrations and events can take place, or community members can enjoy the local cuisines.

Midtown Torch DistrictULI Hines Competiton

Spring 2016Working with four other students,

we entered the Urban Land Institute’s Hines Development

Competition. The challenge this year was to develop parcels of

land in the Midtown area of Atlanta, GA. We had two weeks to develop

a proposal as well as complete a pro-forma to evaluate if the design is feasible and put a cost with the

development.

Team Members: Culin Thompson Luke McElwain

Patrick Witthaus Chris Barry

Page 16: Portfolio - Spring 2016

Our project was branded around the existing Olympic Torch sculpture which was outdated and dilapidated. We proposed to use the existing flame topper and create a new sculpture that would revitalize the area and give it a new identity. Our development was broken into four phases: The Entertainment District, A High Density Block, A new tower above the transit station, and a new public square next to the city’s tallest building.

The entertainment district would allow for students across the highway at Georgia Tech. a safe place to hang out and enjoy as well as be readily availble for the 2020 Super Bowl. The high density block provides a new public square with a water feature as well as new office spaces.

REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY

“I jumped across the pond from London to watch my Falcons play in the Super Bowl this year after falling in love with them when I saw their match at Wembley Stadium a few years ago. I’m staying at Midtown Torch District hotel. Being able to hop on MARTA right from the airport to the hotel made travel easy. It’s great to have so many close restaurants and shops to make my Super Bowl week memorable!”

“I’m a nurse at Saint Joseph Hospital, so it’s nice living so close to the North Avenue MARTA stop - work is only a few stops away! It’s so convenient having bars and restaurants, right out our building’s front door, that I can meet my husband at after we both get off of work.”

“As a member of the congregation at Lindsay Street Baptist Church, my family loves being able to take the new streetcar to service on Sunday mornings from our apartment in the Torch District. As long time Atlanta residents, it’s fantastic to finally have the last leg of our public transit system finished, making the whole city accessible for our car free family!”

“I love living in the Torch District – I can take my bike from my apartment to Piedmont Park, jump on the BeltLine, and from there, basically all of Atlanta is just a bike ride and a great workout away!”

“Being able to walk from the student apartments at Tech to the bars at the Torch District is an awesome addition to living on campus. It’s a staple for Friday and Saturday nights to watch games, go to the bars and enjoy a night out in Midtown.”

Donald Judd MuseumFall 2014Our semester project was to design a 20,000sf museum to house the works of minimalist artist, Donald Judd. This art museum was to be housed on one of two sites we could pick from located in the Crossroads District in Kansas City, MO.

My inspiration for my design stemmed from one of Judd’s paintings. I used the proportions and divisions as divisions both in my landscape as well as a structural grid that informed the circulation in the building.

These proportions were not meant to be obvious, but rather provide the order and spatial feelings that a work of Judd provides to those experiencing it.

In additions to the proportions and divisions of Judd, I also wanted to incorporate his use of void and open space. This created the idea of a central outdoor courtyard as well as a two-story lobby space that served to provide vertical circulation.

The building had a major division in the program which was to have all administration such as offices and museum storage on the ground level, where as the art galleries, cafe, and research library would take place on the second floor. This division was to immediately get the public to what they were interested in and to dive into the art itself.

We also studied the tectonics of the building. I used an aluminum cladding to tie back into the materiality of most minimalist artwork that Judd created.

The last major element of design was the canopy space created by what appears to be a cantilever but is suspended by an abstracted Marfa sculptural piece of structure.

Lobby Desk Design

In addition to creating the building and tectonics, we were also given

the task of creating a lobby desk that would be informed by the

design of our building. This project served to also get us thinking about

the interior design of the project and we were to make a 1/2” scale model of our lobby space with our

desk also located in it.

My design was based off of the entry. The standing height counter

was mimicking the structure that suspends the front. The glass

also served to represent where gathering takes place just as the glass central axis in the building

design.

As mentioned previously, the primary element of the lobby is the vertical circulation. The goal was to provide an interesting staircase

that would draw the inhabitants upstairs to the main programming.

The stairs were to appear light and elegant in front of the glass

panels which look into the central courtyard of the building.

Northrup ParkCommunity CenterSpring 2014

During this studio, we conducted a study on four parks located in Kansas City, KS. My given park was Northrup Park. We first began by producing prototypes based on research that would inform our design of a community center.

The center was to provide a film studio for community based film projects, educational facilities, a demonstration kitchen, and a healthy food store that would be stocked by community gardens.

This area had problems with crime and poverty, so it was a goal to piece the community a center to rebuild and gather.

My center was based on an open plan that provided program based on two wings, with the film on one side, and education on the other, and gathering and demonstration taking place in between. This also served to open the space to the large green landscape and slope of the park.

KCUR RadioSpring 2015

For this design-build studio, we worked with KCUR Public Radio

in Kansas City, MO. As our client, they gave us the task of creating a

mobile unit that they could easily be identified with which would be used to inform the public about

what they do as well as talk to them about current issues. They wanted

something that could fit into a vehicle, could be broken down, and

was lightweight for carrying.

34

Page 40: Portfolio - Spring 2016

DUring our research, there were four teams which each developed a specific prototype. My teams prototype was based off a common system used at trade shows which allows for a lightweight expanding wall system. The wall would go from a 2 foot cube to 8’H x 10’W with ease. We envisioned being able to create an array of lightweight walls which could be branded with a lightweight fabric over an aluminum tube structure.

Page 43: Portfolio - Spring 2016

For the chose prototype, I was in charge of developing the final

models as well as specifying the parts for assembly and

construction. The “A-Frame” design breaks down into three parts which

each have a specific funtion and then there are lightweight cubes

which can be used as seats or as branded elements.

For the materials, I specified 80-20 Modular Aluminum products which kept all of the elements lightweight and easy to transport. We made a

varity of panels that create different graphics or features for the various

displays.

Digital Fabrication

Flat Pack FurnitureFall 2014

I personally have a lager interest in digital fabrication. Being a CNC ma-chinist at the University of Kansas, I found a class that was focused on using digital fabrication techniques to complete a few projects over the course of a semester. The flat pack furniture project was giving us the task to create a piece of furniture that could be milled out of a single piece of plywood as well as assembled without any wood glue, nails, screws, or other meth-ods of fastening. My design was based off of the Eames lounge chair. I wanted to create an economical version of the famous chair that could be assem-bled by the average user and would provide a new visual aesthetic to the well known form.

45

Modular ToyFall 2014

A focus in the class was to find ways to use the CNC router for machining different pieces and to become comfortable with the tolerances and capabilities of the machine. This project had the focus of digital joinery techniques and to be able to create a construction toy that used joints to be assembled. My design was to use a turn key joint in which the wood could slide through and lock into place in each piece. This makes it so that this could be easily repeated to create an endless number of designs and opportunities. The tolerance of the joints also allows them to be pressure fit together to provide another assembly method.

Page 51: Portfolio - Spring 2016

46

Turners CubeFall 2014

The turners cube is a classic test given to lathe machinists. In this

exercise, we were to provide a new age spin on the challenge by

using a CNC router to complete the design.

We began by modeling the piece in Rhinoceros and then using RhinoCAM to set the tooling

and paths. This was particularly challenging as we had to rotate the

cube to make six different sided cuts as we only have a 3 axis

machine.

My design focused on a repetition of shape that reduced towards the center. This was to allow pockets of light and show how unique of a geometry this was to be made out

of a solid block of wood.

L&M Design + Services, LLCDesign + Build

In the fall of 2013, my close friend and classmate, Luke McElwain, and I founded L&M Design + Services, LLC. We focus on remodeling, custom carpentry, repairs, handyman work, furniture, tile laying, as well as a handful of other services.

We are the two employees and do all but electrical and plumbing ourselves. We are involved in bidding on projects, the design, as well as construction and build out.

We also do commercial design work in which we usually have an architect on record for submitting for permits if required.

We manage all of our advertising, branding, and marketing, and client relations. Between the two of us, we have a good amount of experience and are always open to improving our skills as well as taking on new opportunities.

This kitchen was one of our more recent major projects. This project

lasted a few months. We were involved all the way from design, all product and fixture selection,

ordering, demolition, subcontracting the electrical, plumbing and flooring, as well as all finish

carpentry and tile laying.

This kitchen had not been touched since 1975, which meant it was

time for updating. As seen on the previous page, there was a

wall dividing the living space and kitchen. We removed this wall

to open up the floor plan which allowed more natural light as well as views to the lake on which the

house sat.

After completing demolition, we had our electrician rough in the

electrical, after which we drywalled. We then hung and installed all

cabinetry. We also built the corner pantry from the ground up besides the two doors in which we had the

manufacturer send. We also helped the client pick out the backsplash in

which we also laid ourselves.

This project was a very large transformation of the space and

provided a modern update to the home.

Steel FurnitureSummer 2015Overland Park, KS

This furniture was for The University of Kansas, School of Architecture. The department reached out to Luke and I to design + fabricate a full set of furniture that was to be used for the school’s NAAB Accrditation review. These displays allow for a model display surface as well as adequate pinup space. In total there are three varities which are a full height pinup board, a board with a table surface, or a counter height table. In total there were 22 pieces of furniture made. We were able to create jigs which made the assemblies of the sub-systems efficient and easy to duplicate.

Barn DoorFall 2015Overland Park, KS

One of my personal favorite projects was a custom barn door. The clients had an issue with the opening into their bathroom due to the noise or light from their spouse. They came to us and wanted a barn door that was rustic and appeared to be aged, Using a variety of techniques, we aged the wood and added a variety of textures as well as layered finishes which made for a door that looked as if it were made of old planks. We also custom fabricated the steel door handle.

Deck RemodelSummer 2014

Denver, CO

For this project, we were contacted by a client in Denver, CO. He

wanted us to replaced the cedar boards on his deck with Trex

composite. We had a time line of five days including flying there and

back to complete the project.

As you can see in the images, the upper level of the multi story

deck was all angles, meaning that no one board would be the same

dimensions or cuts. This provided a challenge. In addition to this, our client informed us that he wanted it

to be a two tone deck with the outer border being a darker color.

This meant that we had to provide additional blocking and joists to

support the outer border as it would not be supported if it ended

between joists, or was running parallel to them.

We also had to shim the entire deck

as to meet the previous thickness as the deck boards had gone

underneath the stucco walls and there could not be a gap showing

on the deck.

TILE SHOWERSummer 2014

Lake of the Ozarks, MO

Tile laying is one of our more popular services that we are asked

to do. For this project, the client had an outdated faux marble shower

basin that they wanted to convert to a tile shower.

We started by removing the existing panels. We then had to relocate the shower drain itself as to center it on

the new tiled basin. We then used cement board to wall in the new stall with a metal flashing at the

bottom as well as silicone to make sure no water would penetrate the

walls.

After this, we selected the tile with the customers as well as the

pattern in which they were laid. We decided on a 6” x 6” tile in a

vertical aligned joint as to make the small basin appear larger. We also installed a new overhead recessed can light to provide light in the stall itself. We used three different tiles to provide different accents in the shower as well as added in three

new cubbies as per the customers request. Once laid, we used 4 coats

of sealant to protect the tile and grout lines. The final upgrade was updating the fixtures to a brushed

nickel as to match the new updated tile surround.

The time that I spent over in Europe for both school and per-sonal adventure was full of memories that are going to last me a life time. For almost six weeks, I was able to travel and see something new to me almost everyday. Each time consisted of a new discovery .

Not only did I experience new places, but I was also very lucky to meet new people. Whether it be the introduc-tions that professors made for us along the way, or the stu-dents that I was tarevlling with, I made new friendships along this journey. This travel was full of excitement and with these new friends I got to try different foods, get lost in cities I would have never imagined being in, and get to know one another. Being able to see so many different places with-in a short time was strategic in my mind. I was able to still re-member what I saw in each city and I could then compare and contrast the lifestyle, the city structure, the architectural style, and many other things. I was surprised to see how each city had its own unique identity and character along the way such as Berlin to me being an advanced city of transporta-tion, where as Paris was about shopping, fashion, and the arts.

I think that being able to see so many different types of ar-chitecture did well to influence the way that I think about design as well. It is one thing to see buildings presented in a lecture about ar-

chitectural history, but it was a completely different ball game when I was able to walk inside of these places and experience them through sight, sound, and touch. Never would I have imagined some of the public usage, or lack there of, that these sites recieve.

In addition to the architecture, I also appreciated being able to become a part of the culture in the cities and places that I visitied. Such as in Berlin, by the time I had left, I knew a bit of German so that I could be pollite and still be able to communicate. I also under-stoood most of the public transportation and I was able to guide my way to a destination. It was also nice to recognize dishes that I had become fond of on the menues at restaurants. I think that being able to get to a level where I saw the city through the eyes of a local put greater significance on some of the buildings and events that I had attended. It provided a different sort of satisfaction and excitement.

Overall, my experience in Europe was phenomenal. There is not much that I would change, besides the fact that we did have some issues on train rides being stuck to stand for a few hours, but even those make for great stories one day. I think that being able to see architecture and culture in somewhere so far away from home was a great tool that I can use in mu future schooling and career.

Music - Drumming

Drumline

Another interest of mine is music. I have been involved in music since the fourth grade, and ever since it has become a major part of my life. I started playing the drums in middle school, and then continued on to high school. In high school, I competed in drumline and marching band, as well as performed in the wind ensemble. Drumline taught me a lot about self discipline as well as committing myself to a personal interest just as I have done with architecture. It also taught about working collaboratively as a team and learning how to contribute my own findings and knowledge for the best performance from myself for the group.

Drum Set

In addition to drumline and playing the tenors in high school, I also played the drum set. I received my first set in 6th grade and started to take private lessons. Little did I know, that after years of playing, I would form a band. I started off playing in a cover band which performed various class hits at parties and various gatherings. Eventually I went on to the formation of Make The Years Last, a pop-punk band. In this band, we worked our way from the bottom, writing an EP album, and then a full length album. We recorded with Andrew Kremer, and Matt Amelung, two large names in music production in St. Louis.

In addition to writing and recording, we were performing at various venues and slowly our crowds were getting bigger and bigger.

In 2011, I received official sponsorships for drumming from SJC Custom Drums, and TRX Cymbals as well as DW hardware. As the year progressed, we were entered in a competition, and our music won, landing us a spot on the Vans Warped Tour.

After playing such a massive show, we went on our own tour for a few weeks, living out of a conversion van we had purchased. We played all throughout the south and made our way to Florida, and then continued up the East Coast. Music has become a passion, and has taught me a lot of the years, it is a good flow for creativity and self expression as well as making some great friends along the way.
