‘Nai Nai’ concept store Cheng Nan TITLE: ‘Nai Nai’ – a brand concept for a contemporary Chinese Herbal Pharmacy and an evocative retail and service space at London Heathrow Terminal 5. DESIGN CONCEPT: This narrative installation is designed as a concept store for a new brand - Nai Nai (meaning Granny). Inspired by the intangible culture of Chinese herbal medicine, a future- focused pharmacy has been designed as an architectural metaphor for ‘a day in the life’ of the designer’s grandmother – a medicine woman. The concept has been conceived to appeal to western travelers, who are interested in eco-science and homoeopathy. DESIGN AGENDA: The traditional Chinese pharmacy has been translated into a narrative design scheme that adheres to Feng Shui principles relating to the harmony and balance in the universe. This retail space captures the brand in terms of heritage and embraces the contemporary innovations that attract a new international consumer market. The structural drum represents Yin & Yang as a contemporary embodiment of Chinese philosophy. At the heart of the scheme, the pharmacist is seen as an actor in this theatrical scene. Whilst introducing a new material aesthetic suitable for the future, the graphics, fabric, lighting and narrative decorative details evoke a bygone era, reminiscent of the designer’s grandmother who was working as a Chinese Herbalist during the 1960’s. e-mail: [email protected]
