VINTAGE MOOD Next stop

The project Vintage Mood started in 2013, is a revocation of past era such as the 40s and the 50s. In this body of work everything, from vintage props to costumes, is gathered to-gether expressely for the camera. Historical locations are sug-gestive scenarios for imaging and creating stories. Inside the tradition of staged photography, the line between realism and fantasy is tied in an intruiging way, with many references to old b/w movies. Next Stop features different characters who casually embark in a journey in an old train carriage. This leads to curious encounters, bizarre situations and romantic farewells.

VINTAGE MOOD Riding in the 50s

The serie features an imaginery day outdoor of four friends. The city background of Valdagno (in the province of Vicenza, Italy) with its giant textile factory now closed and the tiny bridge, once used for workers to cross the river, the park or the period school, is the set for a story of youthhood, friend-ship and love.

VINTAGE MOOD The wedding day

This body of work portrays a traditional wedding day in 50s Italy, with the family gathered in the house before going to church for the ceremony. With its prevailing middle-class set-ting, the story is pervaded by irony and satire of manners, according to the style of the ‘Italian comedy’.

GIGI’S FRIENDS

Gigi’s friends features people elegantly dressed and made up as if in a black and white mov-ie from the 30s. The serie is full of references to great movie stars of the past, such as Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. The location is Bar Dam, a historic Italian cafe’ of the 30s, a social gathering for elite in the community of Valdag-no, the town of Marzotto, once the world’s lead-ing designer clothing manufacturer founded in 1835.

THE NOIR PROJECT

The Noir project combines the theme of the night with the staged approach. References goes to old film noir movies of spies, gangsters and femme fatales, not only for their intruig-ing plots but also for their peculiar visual language.

FUTURA LOCATION

This is a visual research on the nighty roads of Veneto, a re-gion in the North-East of Italy and also a voyage of self-dis-covery in the silence of the night. The majority of these works depicts vacant streets, abandoned houses, petrol stations and old phone boxes. The passage of time recorded by long exposures, creates seductive light effects and, in contrast, deep shadows. Experimentation with cross process (in this case positive film processed as negative) plays an essential role in the research for altered and acid colours.

BIOGRAPHY

Lichena Bertinato studied Modern Italian Literature at the University of Padua and graduated with an experimental thesis on the relationship between writing and photography. Her approach to photography refers to the segment of contemporary photography known as staged or tableau-pho-tography. More like a movie director than a photographer, with a cast of models/actors and a crew of assistants, Berti-nato uses to stage her pictures. In inventing her motifs and shaping her photographic vision she weaves influences from literature to cinema, especially the tradition of old noir mov-ies and the ‘Italian comedy’. She is currently studying at the University of the Arts-Lon-don College of Communication in London. She has been ex-hibited in London at Debut Contemporary Gallery and at Le Dame Art Gallery. Some works are showcased at the Italian collection hosted by Melia White House Hotel in London.
