GRATULATION interactive sound sculpture - 2019

Gratulation is an interactive sound-sculpture, that discusses rituals like victory, awards, honors etc. The oversized trophies will generate a spherical sound when touched. When the sound fades, pre-recorded applause is played back.

Tquencer tangible musical interface - 2018

The Tquencer is a tangible step sequencer. Based on interaction using tokens and overlays, it offers intuitive use through haptic design elements for creating musical patterns. It can be used for building up simple sequences but also for more complex composing and stage performance. The Tquencer was developed by Martin Kaltenbrunner and Jens Vetter at Tangible Music Lab (TML) at University for Art and Design Linz.

HOMO RESTIS sound costume performance - 2016 Jens Vetter and Sarah Leimcke

From the long lasting cooperation between Jens Vetter and Sarah Leimcke a new performance project has been created. The sound costume performance HOMO RESTIS asks for the use of public space with absurd means Two actors, dressed up in costumes, move slowly through squares, streets and station halls and seemingly for no reason start to spread their nets in selected places. By using small cabinets in which loudspeakers and long strings are prepared, the public space becomes a structure in which they perform a futuristic puppet theatre. Accompanied by sounds triggered by the movements in the strings, they create a utopian otherness that lifts the everyday environment from its configuration for a short time and changes it spectacularly.

NETZ 2.0 interactive sound installation - 2018

The inspiration from the structures of nature, geometry and stability have led to an installation that is both artificial and organic: a meditative journey through touching a spider web-like construction. When touching and stretching the individual strings, the installation generates real-time synthetic sounds that are played from the loudspeaker in the middle of the network.

EINS NACH DEM ANDEREN sound installation - 2015

I used algorithms to abstract autobiographical history. In an installation arrangement, the focus is on a computer screen - it shows programming code.

The program, written in SuperCollider, is randomly generating sound, 8 different chapters. In between the chapters the screen shows the temperature of 5 cities I have lived in. The temperature-values are metaphorical, they are generated by algorithms, that more or less fit to the emotional state I had in those cities. Some of them are shifting fast between a huge range, others oscillate slowly about a small range of high values.

RHABARBAR sound installation - 2012

Childhood memories culminate in this sound installation. A kitchen stove stands exposed in a white marked area in an old abandoned kitchen. In the glass pane, white LED lights imitate a mouth that constantly repeats a simple word:"rhubarb bar". In addition, a sample sounds every time inside the hearth. I remember a prank that I made as a boy together with my classmates to the teachers: the muttering of the word Rhabarbar should disturb the quiet of the lesson.

INKOGNITO sound costume performance - 2010 Jens Vetter and Sarah Leimcke

Two performers act in futuristic costumes in public space. Dressed in costumes that have extensions that transform pure moving and approaching walls or other people into sounds. Specially designed portable sound modules on the back of the actors trigger mechanically sounding materials such as cymbals or aluminium tubes. Musical patterns are triggered by movement, gravity or proximity. The performance was created in collaboration with Sarah Leimcke, the sound devices have been individually developed by me.

HÜHNERFRIKASSEE sound costume performance - 2010 Jens Vetter and Sarah Leimcke

Hühnerfrikassee is a performance by Sarah Leimcke and Jens Vetter. The procedure and structure is the same in all versions. There is always an installation of instruments, table and stove. In addition to the varied equipment, a fence or the film Hühneraerobic is also available, depending on the room. In the actual performance Hühnerfrikassee Vetter und Leimcke appear in golden chicken costumes with a full shopping trolley and a ladder on the plan. Then they split up: Vetter makes the music, Leimcke cooks on the chicken ladder chicken fricassee with bacon dumplings soufflé. Both sing in German, the recipe and episodes from the life of a chicken are sung about. The songs are full of allusions to human existence. The "chicks," American name for chicks, are loose. The performance ends when Leimcke has cooked the food, served the food on the table, the music ends and both of them leave the installation.

HOMO DROSOPHILA sound costume performance - 2008 Jens Vetter and Sarah Leimcke

In these installations by Sarah Leimcke, the wearers of fly masks act in room installations made of various pieces of furniture and projections of the film "Fliegenmetamorphose". In addition, live improvised music by Jens Vetter, which has its origin in conceptual samples from nature, which were then processed and alienated by analog synthesizers and loop stations. Outstanding among the Homo Drosophila installations is the work of 2008, during the "Ostrale" in Dresden. Four islands are in port water. Three are swimming, resembling an apartment. A living room, a bedroom and a kitchen on the water surface. An island is like a laboratory and is connected to the country. Sound come from the laboratory, fly films are projected onto the harbor basin and gluey fly people appear everywhere. They swim, crawl, dive, dance and run. A bizarre world builds up around and in the installation, until the projections and noises fade away, the fly people disappear and the islands quietly stomp in the dark harbor basin.

BUREAUMASCHINE sound performance - 2017

In an energetic stage performance Jens Vetter always tries to create a dense atmosphere in which organic sounds flows into repetitive rhythms with a multitude of different instruments. He uses old analog synthesizers, theremin, DIY circuits, loop stations and other sound generators. He focuses on the experiment, more than on prefabricated sequences. Concerts are moments of spontaneous creation of exciting sound landscapes and musical outbursts.

VETTER_HUBER sound performance - 2019 Jens Vetter and Patrik Huber

Vetter Huber compresses their unique artistic cosmos by (musically) examining industrial-techno and staged self-performance. At the crossover point (threshold) to sound art, based on algorithmic programming code – no synth, no sequencer, technology is subverted as an instrument of inversion.

On a performative level a disposition takes place that reminds us of new wave and punk without copying or quoting it as a truism. Detachment from the world elevates itself not as a negative counter strategy but as a celebration of excess- a metaphor for human ruptures where surreal spaces unveil themselves.

VARIOUS OBJECTS instrument development

Interested in new approaches to instrument making and testing the boundaries between object and instrument, Jens Vetter regularly tries to create new devices with the help of simple electronics and his experience in music. Whether it's a belly pocket that is converted to a synthesizer, or an attempt to return the creation of reverb from the digital domain back to the analog domain, as in the search for suitable materials for a plate reverb.

ARTIST STATEMENT / BIO

Jens Vetter mainly active in the field of sound art, interactive sound objects and stage performances with musical and non-musical tools. His artistic practice is driven by curiosity for restrictions as a liberation, exaggeration of details and reinterpretation. He uses various tools and media to convey his ideas, which at the same time reflects his interest in the tools themselves, as well as their technical or conceptual possibilities or limitations.

His works include installations, sound objects, performances and algorithmic compositions. „Eins nach dem Anderen“ uses computer algorithms to express autobiographical experiences. His sound installation called "Netz" is an oversized artificial spider's web containing a loudspeaker in the middle, which can be touched and generates monotonous sound waves. His last work "Homo Restis" is the latest collaboration with the German artist Sarah Leimcke. Two figures dressed in expensive, science fiction-like costumes act by connecting themselves to the environment through strings. They move the strings to create sounds with the help of specially created digital sound modules and thus orchestrate public places.
