GUSCIOCHEAP SHELTER FOR HOMELESS

Page 3: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

3

The project stems from the need for the home-less, a shelter to spend the night. Some associations, such as the Italian Red Cross, provide aid to the homeless with the di-stribution of blankets and hot meals; cases are still on the agenda of the news, witnessing the

suffering and hardship of these people, which in some cases even leads to death. It is thus necessary to rethink a shelter in low-cost and allowing for a shelter from the ele-ments.

GUSCIOCHEAP SHELTER FOR HOMELESS

Analyzing the topic, I have sought to focus the attention on some points: easy installation, low costs, weather resistance and easy transporta-tion.Among the different materials tested, the most suitable for this purpose is a metallized polye-

ster film, which acts as a blanket isothermal. The reflective properties of this material allow to protect the body from sun’s rays or prevent body heat loss.

The discussion was about simple geometric shapes and surfaces that were to set upon them.Initially tests were carried out with the iron rod and it has come to define the spiral shape.Considering objects with similar geometry as the gardenings basket and greenhouses pop up, that the iron rod has been replaced by a steel rod that has the ability to better maintain its shape. The next step was to minimize the diameter of steel wire to allow a lower cost and less weight.Among the properties of harmonic there must be a strong shape memory, and a great

hardness, the steel rod used has a very small diameter that allows great flexibility. With this object the closed space can be redu-ced by up to three times. When it’s open the diameter is 75cm, when it is closed is less than 30 cm allowing more easy transport. The reflective properties of the metallized pol-yester helps to protect the body from the rays of energy or to prevent loss of body heat. The first gold placed outside can trap heat, whi-le the silver side reflects the sun’s rays.

Page 7: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

7

The two different thermal properties of polye-ster allow to use the shelter for protection from the cold and from the sun’s rays on the other side of polyester. That is why the spiral is slightly narrower from one side, that is a “truncated cone”; this form allows to easily swag the refuge by passing the bottom of your extension. The two materials perform different functions; the polyester film protects from the cold and

rain while the steel frame gives strength .

The distribution of this refuge would be easy because it can be done through a service alre-ady existing. The object designed to a specific target can be used in all situations of need, not only by the homeless, but in all emergency situations when a refuge is required.

T.P. THE LIGHT CREATOR OF SPACES

Page 9: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

9

The name of the project remember the indian tepee from which the object is ispired.Developed for the competition Dima Design “Private places of thought” this lamp is the ab-solut statement of light creator of spaces. We thought about the possibility of dividing the space with geometrical figure and using light.

The light is understood as generating of micro-environments, for example if you look at a can-dle in a dark room or area around a fireplace you realize that the only space that becomes important is that achieved by the beam.

Page 10: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

T.P. is both a lamp and a domestic shelter,The conical shape follows the propagation of light, the light takes a personal dimension crea-ting a space defined by the cone of light and by the structural components of the object.

10

Is very strong appeal to the Indian tepee from which derives the name of the object, TP not just a pun, but it is an acronym that everyone can associate a personal meaning.

FLOWURBAN FURNITURE SYSTEM

Page 13: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

13

Flow is the final result of a designing process that started with a thought: how the public furni-ture can be changed not only in shape but also in functions. What usually people do when they sit on a pu-blic bench? It depends by the presence or not of other people, that can be strangers or not. By the laws of proxemics, a trade of the ergo-nomics, we know that people have an invisible shield, that changes its dimensions due to the proximity with different kind of people that are standing close to us. For example think about cinemas or theatre, we choose to sit next to a

strangers only if that is the unique seat free. In this way, if we could, we would change the position of the seats to make ourselves confor-table and relaxed. The new function consists in a system that allows people to locate the seat wherever they want. But it nod finishes here. Several times ben-ches, flower beds and bicicle racks are so different and separated, that you can’t put them on the same family of objects. Urban furniture must be coherent on all its components.

Page 14: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

The system that can resolve those problems is composed by 5 different modules, with a same mother-mould. All the modules are kept toge-ther by two pipes of stainless steel. One of the modules the ‘’1st module’’ can be linked on the floor, while the others (chair module, angular

module, bike-rack module, flower bed module) flows and flying. That shapes allow the public administration to choose the module and the number of them due to their needs. The ideas belong to a group of three person, me, Federico Ghignoni and Riccardo d’Amato.

Globulo is a modular pot designed in collabo-ration with Massimo Barbierato an employer of “Laboratory 2729” located in Venice. The project is based on two fundamental princi-ples: modularity and multifunctionality, and the

close relationship between them. The pot is equipped with a saucer that increa-sed the potential of assembling and allows to create new applications.

MY BOX

Page 21: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

21

MY BOX My box is a project born during the course of design at Lusiada University of Lisbon. The project’s aim was to design three objects: a table, a chair and a bed, that could be transpor-ted on a euro-pallets. We tried to reason about simple shapes and fast joints that do not require screws.

Page 22: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

The objects were designed in plywood, to keep a low cost while still providing a good structural capability. The plywood can also emphasize the joints, highlighting the different textures of wood between the cut side and the floor. All items, except the metal net, are derived

from the tables of 3 cm thick, the objects have a production process very quickly and cheaply, once cut and polished wood, just pack up the pieces and add the two standard metal net.

22

Page 23: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

The seat is composed of two identical parts that are joined by 12 shares that make the finished structure. The table is composed of two similar pieces that are assembled together, then the floor is placed over them.

The bed is made up of four equal parts and two different which are assembled and held together by two metal mesh fencing stan-dards.

PAPILLONPapillon is a seat inspired by instant tents. The project was born during the second year of design course taught by Marco Zito. The indication was planning to use an elastic material and in particular, the elastic rubber (cauc-ciù) thinking about different properties.Analyzing the material, the attention went on the possibility of creating tensions that would allow to perform an action.By studying objects, such as erecting tents or sticks for the blind, has attempted to address other areas of design by noting a lack of a seat in the market with these characteristics.

Page 26: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

Inspired by the first sitting of bent steel and Broyer Stam has arrived at a structure wi-thout a back. The structure has been simplified to the point that they can be divided into eight identical parts with the shape of “L “, the modules end with a simple joint that allows the assembly. The aluminum tube is a long stretch taut that allows automatic mounting.Enclosed is placed inside a bag of size 35x15x5cm.The bag is created from a rectangle of cloth

where are sewn velcro strips that allow the closure.Opening the bag, the structure is assembled in seconds, and it takes the shape of a bow. When you open the bag and folding it on the body, the seat creates by itself. The bag has a handle for easy transporta-tion, even weight and dimensions of the object makes it easy to transport.

EYE

Eye is a project born during the second year design course taught with Marco Zito. The theme of the project was the dark under-stood from different point of view, from the

blindness to safe, and the positive and ne-gative characteristics that result from the absence of light.

Page 29: portfolio-francesco toselli ENG

29

It has been considered the awakening as a transition between darkness and light. The most common forced awakening, among people, is the sound of an alarm clock. Eye is an alarm light and it’s formed by a

spherical cut structure and a cap that screens off the light. It is possible to regulate the opening time of the cap to allow a more rapid or gradual awake-ning.

Experiments on the different characteristics of the egg, a natural form that can be perfect and at the same time can be fragile or very tough.Properly distributing the weight an egg can hold up to 70 kg. it’s a perfect example of the im-portance of the study of form and matter but also an incentive to the inspiration of natural forms.

EGG THROWINGIn 2007-2008 I attended a design course with Prof. Riccardo Blumer. The first provided the de-sign of a paper wrapper that protected an egg from the fall from the second floor. Using just paper, so a flying machine able to glide and to withstand the impact. So, just using paper, it had to design a flying. The testing-day each person had to throw the model out the window trying to get landed it on a defined area. The theme, playful and fun, introduces two fundamental components for the design: the problem and the material.

WALKING ON EGGSIn 2009, during the “Salone del Mobile” in Milan, I attended a workshop taken by the architect Richard Blumer, whose theme was walking on eggs. The theme was to design a footwear able to walk on eggs without breaking them; to realize it, could only be used materials found inside the furniture fair.

The material experimentation is a key compo-nent to achieve a complete project and acquire new incentives.Studying different materials and testing diffe-rent processes help the search for new sugge-stions and approaches to the matter. Not always the testing leads to the creation of an object, you can also stop at the only mate-rial study. After following a short course at a pottery in

Ferrara I acquired manual ability with the mate-rial and I tried to use various techniques. Below there are some pictures of ceramic objects. In the first case the object is a small carafe obtai-ned by joining two “sheets” of ceramics, cutting a wedge has been created the hole. The second object is a vase made by pressing into a mold hundreds of small ceramic balls, the result is reminiscent of the clods of earth cracked typical of arid areas.

UNDERSTANDING WITH THE HANDS

Below are some pictures of an experiment car-ried out on the skin that investigates the possi-bility of giving a different consistency to matter. The skin was stretched on molds, dipped in

boiling water for a few hours and then allo-wed to dry, once dry the material completely changes proprieties and becomes surprisingly resistant especially on edges and folds.
