To complete the experience of this portfolio some of the briefs must be viewed in digital form. I have in-cluded a DVD, which includes all necessary files to

view the content.I have clearly marked on the brief page when you need to view the digital content and what the file-

name is on the DVD.A provided a link of uploaded work is on each brief

page if the DVD fails to comply.

Pencil BriefI was given the quote “A pencil can be whatever it wants to be” so I took the idea I had initially came up with and created it into an iP-

hone 4 stand.

Over the page is what pencils mean to me....

Paper Brief

The paper brief brought me out of my comfort zone. It let me use a scalpel and paper instead of a mouse and keyboard for my interaction with typography. I started by sticking to the brief and cutting an upper

case A-Z. I then wanted to make this more interesting as it was dull and white. I took photos of it in front of

different backgrounds to give it an essence of life. I put together a series of different photos. Afterwards I cut

out words I felt at that moment and placed it in front of backgrounds, that the word meant.

Taking the Paper BriefFurther

Staying on the subject of food, as the last word I used was beans, I had some potatos spare, so I decided to put them to use and cut the alphabet out of them. Af-terwards I took a photograph of them and created a

typeface out of them in Illustrator.

Pen VS Paper

I thought about how to engage why the pen & paper is better than the computer. I thought about what made the computer meaningful for me, and it was because I grew up with it. As the computer grew I grew. So I pro-duced a timeline of the pen & paper to help the reader understand about where the pen & paper came from.

I produced a digital magazine to compliment the time-line. Producing other articles of pens & paper along-

side with some fake pen & paper advertisements.

Time & Motion

At first I thought about what time & motion meant to me. It came down to 2 subjects that meant the most to me. Stop frame anima-tions & time lapse photography. My favourite stop frame anima-

tion when I was a child was Postman Pat, so I decided to produce a short animation on it. After the final outcome, I wasn’t to pleased with it. Maybe being too childish, out of date? I then thought about a time lapse in London, but producing a timelapse would take too long and cause me to be stuck in one location for a long ammount of time. So I decided to use video and speed up the video or slow down the video. I went to London to test this out and went to the tourist locations, I came back with a 2 minute and 28 second out-

come. I then planned more ahead thinking about more tourist loca-tions to film. I used tourist locations as It would be boring to watch if it was just a street or shop. I went back for 3 days and this time, I came back and after a long edit produced a 6 minute and 29 sec-

ond short film.

The short film is meant to make you feel time & motion from the land-scape, people and transport, playing with slow, sped up or normal

speed with the video. It takes you from the early hours of business to the night time tour-

ist locations. It is meant to show London in 3 speeds enabling you to travel on a map like I did to film it. When im walking though busy

streets the speed is sped up, when I stand there to take in a sight it’s at normal speed.

My own websiteAt first I was going to design a portfolio based web-

site but after speaking to Mellissa and realising I don’t have enough decent work to show. I decided to play

Snow DaysI went out to take some photographs which lead to

trying to shoot a short film, but there was no narrative and not enough content due to it being to cold to func-tion. So I couldn’t really develop the ideas any further.

Vitamin Water is my most favourite drink, down to taste and de-sign.

I’d thought I’d give a go at producing a new flavour for them. Drawn through Illustrator And edited in Photoshop.

Playing with steps in Illustrator, this represents nothing.

Just before the GD course started, I took a course on Maya (3D program). This is just keeping my 3D skills

up to scratch.

Page 34: Portfolio for Creativity & Play & Independant Practice

The same again, using Maya to create a dream like poster.

Page 35: Portfolio for Creativity & Play & Independant Practice

The beginning to this course was rocky for me, not attending all pos-sible workshops; towards the middle it ironed itself out more. I at-tended more, interacted with the staff more; tutorials helped a lot with motivation for me, hearing new ideas I could try with my work. I am persistent to try again & again, this has shown in my time & motion brief where I failed with the first 2 attempts and tried again for the final outcome which I am very pleased with. But I could be more persistent towards other briefs. Again with enthusiasm, at the beginning of the course it was lacking with briefs that were out of my comfort one, but after speaking about it to my tutors I realized that I need to learn these new skills in order to develop myself as a more fuller and all round designer. Everything was there for a reason and I just had to get out of my comfort zone and explore. With research I’m never too good, I’ve tried my best to make my ide-as come across and how they came to life. Not all the time I work in my sketchbook but maybe searching on the internet from one thing to another, and that’s how my ideas comes to life. I need to improve this so I can show how the idea came to life, remove it from my head and onto a piece of paper or a document on the computer. One of my favourite parts of research is learning, you start at one thing and then by the end you learn 100 new things. Travelling from one subject into hundreds of different possible outcomes. My time management has to improve, at the beginning there was none. I do not plan enough but nearer towards the end I was planning my self-timetable when to get certain work done by, and it worked! Everything was more stream-lined; I knew what I was going to do & when it had to be done. I can clearly see the advantages of planning ahead.I have to explore more, during the last few months I have opened up and explored things I normally wouldn’t, not because I don’t like it but because I’m scared to attempt it. My confidence has to rise in or-der to attempt it. Refining older projects is a task I am new to, I’ve learnt that nothing is ever finished and it can always be pushed more. There are no limits. So for next semester I have to take all the above on board and im-prove on it.
