URBAN SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX

THIS COMPLEX INHABITS A SITE IN CENTRAL BOSTON NEAR THE NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. ITS INTEND-ED PURPOSE IS TO SERVE AS A SWIMMING, DIVING AND GYM FACILITY FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF ALL AGES. IT ENCOMPASSES A FULL SIZED POOL, SMALLER TRAINING POOL, DIVING WELL, AND AN ASSORTMENT OF CARDIO AND WEIGHT-LIFTING EQUIPMENTS. AS A FURTHER GESTURE TO ACCOMODATE THE PUBLIC, THE FACILITY HOUSES A CAFE AND CAFETERIA AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

THE TRUE CHALLENGE OF THIS PROJECT WAS OVERCOMING THE HARSHLY TRIANGULAR SITE, WHICH IS NEIGH-BORED BY A BUSY CITY STREET ON ONE SIDE AND A STEEP SLOPE DECENDING TO A FREEWAY ON THE OTHER SIDE. MAKING THE FACILITY BOTH ACCESSIBLE AND ACCOMODATING REQUIRED CAREFUL ATTENTION TO CIRCULATION AND THE DYNAMIC BETWEEN OPEN AND OCCUPIED SPACE ON THE SITE.

THE MOST DISCERNING FEATURE BY FAR IS THE LARGE RAMP THAT RUNS ALONG THE EDGE OF MUCH OF THE FACIL-ITY, A GRAND GESTURE OF CIRCULATION INTENDED TO CREATE A PROCESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN WHICH THE PA-TRONS STILL VISUALLY AND AUDITORALLY INTERACTED WITH THE PUBLIC AT LARGE AND SIMULTANEOUSLY EXPERI-ENCE THE INTERIOR FUNCTIONS OF THE SPACE. A BLENDED EXPERIENCE BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, PUBLIC AND PATRON, MADE THE PROJECT LESS OBTRUSIVE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. WITH THE RICH SHOPPING AND DINING EXPERIENCES IN THE AREA, AN OUTDOOR SPACE ACCOMODATES PEDESTRIANS VISITING THE AREA BY PROVIDING OUTDOOR SEATING, BOTH SHADED AND EXPOSED. IT IS ONE THE THE FEW PLACES DEVOID OF VE-HICULAR TRAFFIC IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA.

SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS

THIS PROJECT ENCOMPASSED A MASTER PLAN OF A LARGE URBAN SITE IN SOUTH BOSTON WITH THE INTENTION THAT THE SITE CONTAIN A LARGE RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE, A SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, AND A LARGE GREEN SPACE THAT WAS TO BE SHARED BY ALL OCCUPANTS OF THE SITE.

THE INTENTIONS OF THE DESIGN WERE TO CREATE A MODE OF URBAN CIRCULATION THROUGH THE SITE WHICH WOULD CONNECT THE TWO PUBLIC PARKS WHICH LIE ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE SITE. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, A LARGE PORTION OF THE SCHOOL IS DEVOTED TO A LINEAR CIRCULATION ZONE WHCH NOT ONLY SERVES THE PROGRAM OF THE SCHOOL ITSELF, BUT ACTS LIKE AN ENCLOSED ROADWAY (ALTHOUGH ENCLOSED ONLY BY A GLASS ENVELOPE) WHICH IS MEANT TO SERVE AS A MEANS BY WHICH THE PUBLIC CAN INTERACT WITH THE PER-FORMANCE AREAS OF THE SCHOOL AND ALSO AS A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SURROUNDING GREEN SPACES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

TO ALLOW ENOUGH SPACE TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE LARGE CIRCULATION GESTURE, IMPORTANT DECI-SIONS HAD TO BE MADE REGARDING THE PLACEMENT OF SPECIFIC PIECES OF THE PROGRAM. WHEREVER POSSI-BLE, A METHOD OF CLUSTERING WAS EMPLOYED IN WHICH ONE DOUBLE-HEIGHT PERFORMANCE/REHEARSAL SPACE WOULD BE ADJACENT TO TWO FLOORS OF SMALL STUDIO ROOMS STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER. THIS MINIMIZED THE AMOUNT OF CIRCULATION SPACE NEEDED TO CONNECT ROOMS OF LINKED PROGAMATIC IN-TENTIONS (i.e. A MUSIC REHEARSAL ROOM AND ACCOMPANYING SMALL PRACTICE STUDIOS). OVERALL THIS AL-LOWED MORE SPACE TO BE DEDICATED TO PUBLIC MOVEMENT AND INTERACTION THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY REDUCING THE OVERALL FOOTPRINT OF THE SCHOOL, LEAVING MORE GREEN SPACE AVAILABLE ON THE SITE.

URBAN LIBRARY

THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON UBRAN INFILL, WHERE AN EXISTING BUILDING IS TO BE TORN DOWN AND ITS SITE RE-OCCUPIED BY A SMALL LENDING LIBRARY AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC (AND MORE SPECIFICALLY THE CHINATOWN NEIGHBORHOOD OF BOSTON.) THE FOOTPRINT OF THE BUILDING IS STAUNCHLY DEFINED BY TWO STREET EDGES AND THE PARTY-WALLS OF THE NEIGHBORING EXISTING BUILDINGS.

THE LIBRARY INCORPORATES A STRONG CONTRAST BETWEEN SPACES THAT ARE PRIVATE AND ENCLOSED AND SPACES THAT ARE PUBLIC, OPEN, AND IN SOME INSTANCES (SUCH AS LARGE CIRCULATION AREAS) EXHIBIT THE APPEARENCE OF “FLOATING” OR DISTATCHMENT FROM THE SURROUNDING SOLID MASS OF THE LIBRARY.

THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING THAT ABUTS HUDSON AVENUE, THE INTENDED REAR OF THE BUILDING, HOUSES THE QUITER, MORE PRIVATE, AND UTILITARIAN PIECES OF THE PROGRAM. THESE INCLUDE THE SPACES THAT HOUSE THE LITERATURE STACKS, STORAGE ROOMS, EGRESS/EMERGENCY STAIRS AND ELEVATORS. CONTRASTINGLY, THE SPACES LOCATED TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING ARE MORE PUBLIC, INCLUDING READING AND STUDY AREAS, COMPUTER STATIONS, RECEPTION AREA, AND A MUCH MORE PROCESSIONAL STAIR. A SHIFT IN PLAN OF THE UPPER TWO FLOORS TOWARDS SURFACE ROAD INDICATES A STEP TOWARDS THE PUBLIC, ALLOWING PATRONS TO LOOK DOWN ON THE BUSY STREET AS WELL AS DOWNTHE STREET IN EITHER DIRECTION.
