This is the first project I made from design to completion.The most important thing I have learned from the project is that the design is just a start, making understand it and build it up is the key part.Also, as a successful designer, he or she should have the capacity of controlling the whole project, communicating with customers, explain the ideas to workers, and arrange the progress schedule reasonably.

The design provides kids with a real“ Happy Farm”.They can witness the growing process of plants, learning how to grow and take care of vegetables and flowers. Thus, kids would like to learn more about nature and environment. Also during the process the rela-tionship between kids and teachers will be improved. Kids would learn from each other, teamwork spirit develops in their mind.

Located in a high-class neighborhood which is on the east of Jinji Lake in Suzhou, Newton Kindergarton have kids from many countries. Green education is part of their lessons, so we can see many potting plants outside the classrooms. But this is not enough, the head-master wants a garden specially for kids, which lead to the construction of the educa-tional garden.

Greenhouse Landscape Design

I was appointed to design and build this greenhouse landscape quite after Newton case.In this project I tried to make kids understand nature deeper, not only from growing but the envi-ronment I create.The most important thing I have learned is we should have a grasp of the material we are going to use. In this project, it is bamboo, which has so many advantages.In addition, progress arrangement does matter.

More and more people flood into the crowded city, desiring to appreciate the top-most beautiful sightseeing. While the higher people get, the only place which people want to see is hometown---where we come from. It is simple and sweet, originated from the tightly bond to soil.

What kind of soil breeds such plain and sweet? Nature. It is the origin of everything. However, we have been so far away from the root, not to mention the next generation.

It is our business to bring back to kids and us the simple plain and kindness. We should let the kids also ourselves know where we come from, who breeds us and what we should do to remember our roots. Therefore, we will not lose ourselves in this noisy world.

This is a project in a newly-built greenhouse. With a lean roof, which is averagely 2.7 m high, it is 5*12 m2. There are two pieces of land with clay and the other space is concreted. In order to make full use of the space and create as much as possible “green” for kids, I decided to make a pergola with bamboo. Bamboo, which becomes more and more widely-used in construction in China, is an eco-friendly material and has a bunch of good advantages. Because it was the first time I use bamboo, I met a lot of problems during the process. But they are all solved through our own effort.

Laura`s Edible Garden Design Laura comes from Finland, now is working in China and rent a villa to live with her family. She has two little children so she wants to build an organic vegetable garden for them because of the food safety problems in China. Also, she wants to grow some herbs which is hard to find in Chinese supermarket.There are many families who care a lot about the food safety and want to have a vegetable garden if possible. But growing is not so easy and needs people to touch those muddy soil. Home gardening will be fashionable if we can create more and more modern, organic and gardens for families.This project will be constructed in February, 2013. I believe there is going to be a fabulous ed-ible garden for Laura and her family.

This is our graduation project. It is a team-work project. I was responsible for the plant con-figuration design in the rainwater collection garden.

From this project I began to learn rainwater collection management and rainwater recycling. The professor guide us to study the advanced theory in the field from America. In America, people use rainwater for visible landscape, shower and toilet after a series of treating pro-cesses like biological interception, building rainwater garden, and collecting rooftop rain.

We made full use of those existed plants and facilities, reserved the intrinsic balanced eco-system, collected rainwater and introduced modern countryside landscape in this project.

The project is under construction now, expected to complete in early 2014.

Rainwater Management MethodsLandscape architecture will not only create nice living environment but improve the ecological environment if combined with rainwater collecting and reusing. And different landscape architecture method should be used due to different catchment interface.

Rooftop rainwater managementCompared to other places, rooftop runoff is larger and easier to collect and utilize. But it can not be used or stored directly because of pollution. To solve this problem, we can combine the purifica-tion apparatus with flower beds. The rainwater can permeate into the storage room through the flower bed and used for gardening. When the room is full, the water can flow into those green lands which is lower than ground or infiltrate to ground water.

Hard ground rainwater managementWater permeable brick can decrease ground runoff and filter out dirty things. Loopholes in concrete curbstone can lead over-flooded to rainwater col-lecting drain.

Plant ground cover rainwater managementSubsided rainwater garden absorbs and gathers rainwa-ter from rooftop. Rainwater permeates to supplement the ground water and gardening irrigation through plants and soil.

Chinese Garden in Horti Fair , Holand , 2012

In this project I try to introduce Suzhou Classical Garden elements into modern landscape design.

The theme of the Horti Fair is “Melt into nature, change the quality of life”. On the basis of the theme, we decide to design an outdoor space featured Chinese Classical Garden, which enables visitors to immerse themself in an fascinating land integrated with art, culture and entertain-ment.

I visited classical gardens in Suzhou every now and then, discussed with the tutor who is quite knowledgable, especially in classical garden, and find some ideas on books during the preparation period.

Horti Fair, held once every 10 years. This time it will be held in Venlo, Holland from April to October. More than 2 million visitors from 30 countries and territories will come to take part in the expo.

Chinese garden, about 1500 m2, locates in the World Show Stage of Expo.To meet the requirements of the coucil, there should be a major architecture in Chinese Garden, which can be a model of Drifting Fra-grance Hall in the Humble Administrator`s Garden. The garden focuses on displaying the characteristic of landscape culture in ancient China and development in modern times.

When I was a kid, I had a piece of paradise. I used to search for bird eggs in the forest, brought them back home, made a house for them, made friends with them and witnessed the process birds hatching from eggs. In summer time I would like to jump into river, play games with my dog and swim around. Sometimes I would catch some small fish and mussels for dinner. But all of these happy times only exist in my memory now.

In modern times, kids also have the right to enjoy life in the nature and learn from it like I did, wandering in the forest, swimming in the river and playing in the field. But with the acceleration of urbanization process, we can not give kids those pleasures because the countryside has been far away from us. People live in the concrete forest and enjoy the polluted water, air and land, leading to monotonous living environment and boring life. The nature is no more our friend but enemy.

When I learned landscape architecture, the major of my dreams, I tried to figure out a way to reappear the landscape in my paradise so that kids can enjoy nature again. Nevertheless, one landscape architect’s power is too weak to change anything.

The only way to promote sustainable landscape architecture , the hot topic of contemporary society, pivotal to the future, is to organize experts from different fields, like urban planner, landscape architect, architect, ecologist, surveying and land management researcher, to work together, do interdisciplinary research, and build the paradise for ourselves and the next generations.

Therefore I choose Landscape Architectuture in AHO for its terrific research atmosphere. A bunch of brilliant professors and ideal curriculums help students obtain necessary knowledges and skills to work on landscape architecture. The studio project, which impresses me the most, allows students of different majors to work together hardly toward the same objective.

The topic of my graduation project was rainwater collection. The tutor directed us to study how to collect rainwater from roof, green land, and road, and utilize them in daily life. The most important thing I learned from the project is that sustainable development has been an essential part of modern design efforts, and a standard to judge landscape architecture.

Now I work as a landscape architect in a Finish company which aims at producing eco-friendly products like composter, which turns kitchen and garden waste into organic fertilizer or soil amendment. Our strategy is to cooperate with kindergartens and promote green products to them, thus spreading the eco-friendly idea to children, the future of the society.

We also build educational gardens for kindergartens. For instance, I designed a garden which is made up of ten easy-to-use raised beds for kids in Newton Kindergarten. In the garden children can observe the process a plant grows up from a small seed, thus learning more about plants and nature. I also designed a garden in a greenhouse and an edible garden in a villa backyard.

Though I have designed three gardens and two of them have been put into practice, I found that I have paid too much attention to some details but the whole plan. I would love to go deeper in sustainable landscape, and fulfill my goal in AHO.
