Bird on a Wire wines was established in 2008 following a number of years working as winemaker with Tom Carson at Yering Station, time in Hermitage with J.L Chave and vintages in McLaren Vale. Caroline has a deep connection to the Yarra Valley growing up on a farm in Yering (now the Yarra Valley Dairy Handmade Farmhouse Cheese) still owned and run by her family.

The 2008 Bird On A Wire Syrah, was awarded the 2009 “Under the Radar” prize, judged by winemaking peers for best up-and-coming new producer.

Since then Caroline has continued on to be awarded a 5 star rating in her first year in the James Halliday Wine Companion and also awarded, Best New Small Winery 2013.

The focus is directed towards the quality of these single vineyard sites, each selected for their suitability to a particular variety. Small production volumes and the winemaking techniques employed aim to showcase these vineyards. The care, skill and commitment of the growers results in the production of outstanding fruit and are paramount factors in helping Bird On A Wire achieve the end result.

2018 Bird on a Wire Pinot Noir;

“The Grapes come from The Tibooburra vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley, one of the best growers in the valley. This wine has it all, pushed further by the positive use of oak, sophisticated winemaking and the great vintage.”

Cloak and Dagger evolved during the 2016 vintage when two unexpected parcels of wine popped intriguingly out from amongst the chaos, to reveal 2 interesting and delicious expressions of Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio.

We stumbled and fell even deeper in love with the delicate and bewitching aromatics of cool climate Pinot Grigio. We have created this blend focusing on highlighting the alpine herbal elements of this variety balanced by the freshness of Nashi pears and the steely acidity synonymous with Pinot Grigio.

A single vineyard small batch of Sangiovese was the perfect complement to this crisp ‘Dagger’, with an almost sensual silkiness enveloping an earthy and complex palate.

2018 saw the introduction of the Prosecco, the perfect addition to Callie and Nina’s love of Italian wines. A vibrant wine punctuated by crisp apples and pears with a touch of orange blossom. Perfect on its own or in a spritz!

Cloak and Dagger is an expression that conjures up mystery and intrigue, we hope these wines stimulate your curiosity and enchant you in much the same way!

Wine grower Sam Coverdale believes in living life and creating wines with character and balance. He believes that great wines are grown not made, and is passionate about creating elegant wines that continue to interest beyond the first glass and truly reflect their region and vintage. Closest to Sam’s heart is Polperro, his premium single vineyard label from the Mornington Peninsula which produces the Landividdy Lane and Mill Hill Pinot Noirs, Mill Hill Chardonnay and Polperro Pinot Gris, and embodies the art of wine growing, rather than wine making.

Sam’s second label, Even Keel, celebrates the strengths of Australia’s leading wine regions with a small production of genuine, refined wines grown in regions best suited to specific varieties.

Nick Glaetzer began his wine making journey with his family in the Barossa Valley, following with vintages in the Languedoc, the Pfalz, Margaret River, the Riverland, Sunraysia, the Hunter Valley and Burgundy. In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting pinot noir, riesling and savory shiraz.

Established in 2008, Glaetzer-Dixon is now an eminent Tasmanian wine maker. The Glaetzer family of winemakers has roots in the Barossa Valley dating back to 1888. In 2011 Nick was named “young wine maker of the year” by Gourmet traveller magazine.

Also in 2011 Nick’s 2010 Mon Pere Shiraz was awarded the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show - the first time in the trophy’s 50 year history for a Tasmanian wine.

Nick has planted a 12ha vineyard at Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley, with the first harvest due in 2021.

By the light of the Harvest Moon, some may dance, some howl, and some swoon, but we toil to create, and harvest our fate, and bring you our latesst Vic wines!

CALLIE JEMMESONCallie has grown up with wine in the blood. It was family holidays to Chianti in Italy, and tasting’s at Louis Roederer in France that sparked a serious passion in Callie from a very young age. Having studied psychology and criminology at Melbourne University, and qualifying as a chef it was the lure of wine and more so vineyards that she just couldn’t resist. She’s now studying wine making at Charles Sturt University, and has already worked at some A list wineries, including De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley, Littorai Wines in California and Fattoria Zerbina in Romagna.

NINA STOCKER Nina was born and raised in a small town on the border of the Alsace wine region in Switzerland. It was her family’s involvement in the local village vineyard in those early days, which paved the way for her future career as a Wine maker. She has worked vintages in McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley, Barolo (Italy), Rhone Valley (France), Alentejo (Portugal), and most notably in New Zealand as chief wine maker making the Catalina Sounds, Crowded House and Nanny Goat wines for Endeavour Vineyards. She is thrilled to be back making wine in Victoria, where the diversity of varieties, microclimates, and wine styles is a wine makers dream!

Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2012. Ken and Judith Helm started the vineyard, winery and cellar door and it continues to be a family affair with all of the family playing an integral part in the business. The wine makers are Ken and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in 1860s.

The 2016 releases represent Ken Helm’s 41st in a row, an extraordinary achievement and one from an irrepressible champions of Riesling and for the Canberra district. Over the years he has achieved many things, through dogged persistence on the one hand, vision on the other. Riesling has been an all- consuming interest for him, ultimately rewarded with rieslings of consistently high quality. He has also given much to the broader wine community, extending from the narrow focus of the Canberra District to the broad canvas of the international world of riesling: in ‘00 he established the Canberra International Riesling Challenge, retiring as Chairman in ‘16, but keeping an active eye on the Challenge.

2018 Helm Premium Riesling;

“Premium! Outstanding riesling of multi-dimensions, a wine to savour and cellar, to revere but drink with gusto. I love the perfume, delicate in a way, floral very much, whiffs of mixed peel and dried apple fleeting but pleasant. The palate is coiled and precise but doesn’t lose freshness and light juiciness. Length is epic. Flavours stain the palate gently. It’s just so very, very good. And pays homage to high quality fruit. Bravo. ”

Home Hill is very much a Tasmanian boutique vineyard, winery and restaurant situated on the gentle slopes of the beautiful Huon Valley. Terry and Rosemary Bennett established Home Hill planting their first 0.5Ha in 1994, increasing these planting’s to 3 Ha of Pinot, 1.5Ha of Chardonnay and 0.5 Ha of Sylvaner. As a low altitude area the Huon Valley has a cool temperate climate with moderate summers, very high sunshine hours and mild winters. The long slow ripening period allows for optimal development of fruit flavours. The Bennett family has spared no expense in developing Home Hill to produce award winning wines, with unique viticultural practices employed to reduce yields, a brand new state of the art winery and most importantly the wine making skills of Gilli and Paul Lipscombe.

“It’s fresh and raring to go but it has good volume too. In fact there’s a heartiness to the fruit here. Plums, violets, forest berries and a minted licorice character. It’s damn tasty and damn good to drink. No hesitation in recommending this.”

The Inca earth goddess who brings fruit to the vine and joy to the world. Pacha Mama, is a small family owned wine company established in 2010. Whilst new to the market, it’s new in name only. Made by Pacha’s new wine making duo Nina Stocker and Callie Jemmeson, these wines are a knockout.

Pacha Mama Chardonnay;

“Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, fermented in French oak (20% new) for 10 months on lees with weekly stirring. Disciplined winemaking with attention to detail has been its own reward. White peach, pink grapefruit and the barest hint of grilled nuts, likely oak-derived, provide all the flavour needed without compromising the finesse of a lovely chardonnay. 13.4% alc.”

Chris Catlow established Sentio wines in Beechworth in 2013 after seven vintages on the Mornington Peninsula with Kooyong Estate, Portsea Estate and Paringa Estate. Sandro Mosele was one of a handful of mentors driving Chris Catlow in his early years. Chris’ passion is for Chardonnay, starting with his teenage years helping Barry Morey at Sorrenberg, another mentor who inspired Chris to complete a double degree in Viticultural Science and Wine Science, setting him up for a bright future in wine.

Chris struck up a friendship with Benjamin Leroux and has completed 5 vintages with him, convincing Chris that a project based around site expression using Chardonnay was to be his focus. Selecting great sites led him to Lusatia Park in the Yarra Valley, the Macedon Region and of course Beechworth. Chris’ winemaking philosophy is to let the site express itself, using a basket press to get maximum control out of this process and to oxidatively handle the juice. Wild yeast fermentation takes place ‘on solids’, in barrel and the wines spend time on lees. Chris only uses one French Cooper (Chassin), keeping the wines in 15% new barrels for 10 months and has a very strict ‘no malo’ policy.

With his reds Chris applies the same approach, finding the site in the wine and not forcing it to fit a style.

“Sentio wines, if you’ve not heard the name before, is a fledging but high class producer. I have a feeling that Chris Catlow – the man behind Sentio Wines – will fast emerge as a new star of the Beechworth (and beyond) wine scene.”

2018 Sentio ShirazFrom one of the best producers in the region.Perfumed as ever and luxurious on the palate though the finish is dry and savoury in a good way. This shiraz in a good-as-ever place. Jellied black berries, ripe plum, sweet spice, toasted cedarwood/woodsmoke and grainy, spicy, earthen tannin. Lovely. Now or later

From a prolific sixth generation Barossa Valley grape growing family, Dan knows a thing or two about vines and the vineyards of the region. Harvest stints in California’s Napa and Sonoma valleys, La Rioja and Yecla in Spain coupled with extensive travel and study of France’s Rhône Valley reinforce his intricate local knowledge with a diverse international bent.

The Standish Wine Company vintage cellar and barrel store is intimately designed to fully embrace and nurture the individuality afforded by clone, soil and aspect. Tiny open top oak fermentation vats allow single parcels – even single rows – to be vinified separately, enhancing the intricate personality of each specific soil profile.

Lamella“Hand-picked from the Stonegarden Vineyard (planted 1858) in the far south eastern hills of the Eden Valley. I’m not sure Eden Valley Shiraz gets much better than this.

Black fruits, black pepper and exotic spice, sage and aromatic herbs, BBQ snags, floral top notes. Full bodied, incredible density and depth here, black fruits with a subtle mintiness, all that spice and mouth-perfume, then sheets of silky ultra-high pixel tannin, cool acidity, and superb length, with a cascade of nourishing tannin to farewell. Superb.” 97pts Winefront

“The 2018 The Standish Shiraz (a sample blend from barrel) is a bit stalky (it’s about 50% whole cluster), but it’sgorgeously perfumed, with hints of herbal tea, raspberries, blackberries and licorice. It just exudes complexity, while alsobeing full-bodied, plush and creamy, with a long, elegant finish. This seamless beauty is a candidate for perfection.”98-100

The Story Wines was established in 2004 by Rory Lane, sourcing fruit from vineyards in the Grampians region of Western Victoria, and making them into wine at a converted warehouse in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. A close friend remarked at the time “you’ve really just got the stories that go along with how you make the wine each year”.

The name stuck, and each year since then ‘The Story’ Grampians Shiraz label is changed to tell the story of that year. Since then, The Story Wines has grown from its early days as a garage operation to a highly regarded wine brand. Rory Lane manages all production, focusing on top-quality, interesting wines that tell a story of their origin and their time.

In the winery the grapes are gently destemmed (or not) and moved by gravity to small open fermenters where they ferment with ambient yeasts. Many of the wines have no additions other than sulphur dioxide, and for the reds, they are usually bottled without any fining or filtration. Simple, hands-off winemaking.

Some accolades include:- 2011 Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year Finalist- 2011 Young Gun of Wine People’s Choice Winner- 2014 Young Gun of Wine Finalist- 5 star (red) rating in James Halliday’s Wine Companion

2017 The story R. Lane Vintners Syrah

“Before anyone gets too excited, let me tell you there were only 65 dozen bottles made, and Rory Lane had just enough room to move in deciding how to handle options normally too small to contemplate. The upshot is a wine made with endless patience from great parcels of grapes. Spicy, zesty black cherry, berry and plum fruits numerous secondary aromas and flavours.”
