I am studying Industrial Design andProduction Development Engineering atMondragon Unibertsitatea. At the same time Iam taking some complementary subjects asan introduction for Industrial EngineeringMaster.

I have a keen interest in almost relationed withIndustrial Design and the ability to learnquickly. I can work in group as well asindividually. In both cases I really like to do mybest.

The purpose of this portfolio is to show theprocess behind the projects to better displaymy capabilities throughout the design process. All of the projects in this portfolio are done asuniversity works. Even though they have notbeen produced in a real they actually serve todemonstrate my capacities.

WORKING METHOD

Analysis Conceptualization Development

The final obejct of the project is analizedthoroughly. Among others, market, user, culture and area analyses are done. Oncethe essence of the project is assumed, aspecific aim focused on the user isformulated.

Based on the aim defined in the previousstage, ideas are compiled and thencaptured like sketches, models... Later on,best ideas are selected (normally threeideas) and developed in order to achievesome preliminary designs.

Finally the best idea is selected (or amixture of some of them) and developedcompletely. In this stage the 3D model, including all the components, is created. Itis also designed its final aesthetic and allthe resistance calculations and technicalplans of every component. To sum up,everything required to manufacture and tointroduce the product onto the market isdefined.

Módular is the design of a bench for YOR,a street furniture company. This bench wasdirected to the neighborhood of SanFrancisco, in Bilbao.

After the analysis of the area, it was clearlyseen the necessity of promoting the integration of the different social groups. It was also seen the necessity of renewingthe image of the neighborhood.

The result was a very versatil bench inorder to suit the needs of the area.

The following pages are focused onanalysis and development stages realizedfor the project.

This project was done in collaboration with:Jone Etxaburu, Juanita Garcia, LanderGomez, Unai Sarasola and Amaia Ugarte.

AREA ANALYSIS

San Francisco, socially speaking, is themost damaged area in the city of Bilbao. It does not have so much pedestrianzones, common spaces or big tradeswhich foment the tourism or improve itsimage.

It is considered an undeveloped area, which can be owed to the presence of theprostitution and drugs, transmitting thisway a distrust image. Besides, the highrate of vandalism and poor quality of life, make it an insecure neighborhood.

Even so, the last few years a movementof young and enterprising people hasappeared, and is promoting theneighborhood.

Aesthetics Population Climate

Straight lines and very rectangulardistribution.

Having so little space betweenbuildings, pavement and road, createsa claustrophobic feeling.

A significant rise was observed in the last8-10 years.

The number of young people (25-49 years)and the percentage of immigrants is muchbroader than in the other districts ofBilbao.

It rains one in two days and is locatednext to the Bilbao Estuary.

It also took into account the maximum (41 °C) and minimum (-1.7 °C)temperatures and the maximum time itcan stay in the sun (14 h).

Page 10: PORTFOLIO Aitor Etxaniz Ortiz

AIM

After analyzing the areas needs, the teamdecided to create a strong bench, toconvey calm and usefull for large groups.

In addition, it was defined that its designhad to communicate modernization, leaving behind the image of poverty.

The image and the panel in the panelsum up perfectly the aim:

“Bench or space that encourages throughits aesthetics the rehabilitation of thearea. Taking into account themulticulturality of San Francisco and thecurrent economic situation, transformingthe image of the neighborhood”

COLOURS

The colors were key in achieving thetarget of providing calm and rehabilitateand transform the image of the area.

In the analysis there were taken intoaccount the following countries, becausemost immigrants comes from them:Maghrib, Romania, Bulgaria, China,Senegal, Colombia and Bolivia.

After processing all the compiledinformation, the following panelsummarized the final selection.

SanFran DUO New Wave Módular

Its form is inspired in the symbol of the Yinand the Yang and its aim is to create calmmeeting points among different types ofusers.

The use turns out to be very varied thanksto the double circular form that can takeadvantage in different postures andorientations.

The form of this bench recalls the oceanwaves, transmitting a sense of peaceand tranquility.

Its elongated shape, without support, does not delimit any way to sit, permittingdifferent ethnicities or cultures to adapt toit.

Módular is a very versatile bench becauseits shape permits to create differentcombinations of benches, promoting thisway the integration of the users.

This bench was selected as the finalproject, which will be explained in moredetail in the next pages.

SIZING THE THICKNESS

Minimum thickness = 7 mm

PROCEDURE

Apply static laws to obtain all the actingforces.

Make calculations for bending, torsion, compression ... in the different sections, obtaining the minimum thicknessnecessary to support in each section.

Select the greater thickness obtainedbecause it is the most restrictive.

Check it with a finite elements program(SolidWorks).

RESULTS OF THE FINITE ELEMENTS ANALYSIS

The maximum displacement is given in the back and is 2,729 mm.

BUZTANG ROADThe aim of this project was to design theaesthetics of a two-seater remote controlcar, I mean, we had to create andmanufacture a remote control carscarcass, but its aesthetic had to befocused on a true two-seater car.

It was followed all the design process tocreate this car, but in the following pagesthere are explained the conceptualizationand development stages.

This project was done in collaboration with:Ekaitz Arruarte, Iñaki Ten, Lander Gomez,Iñaki Sendino, Jon Ander Urdalleta, IonIragorri, Mario Salazar, Aitor Urkiola andSergio Cadierno.

There are many ways to model in a 3Dprogram, but this time was used a inverseengineering process to do it, using thepolystyrene model like suport. (NX 7.5)

To make the carcass possible tomanufacture, the details have beenremoved due to molds exit angles andtools roundings.

This project has the aim of creating a productto reduce water consumption in 2020housings.

The result has been WASSER TANK, a showerwhich visualizes used water, to increase amore sustainable mindset.

This project was done in collaboration with:Izaro de Pedro, Aitor Ruiz, Iñaki Sendino eIñaki Diez.

Page 25: PORTFOLIO Aitor Etxaniz Ortiz

ANALYSISWater scarcity is a big problem today andwe should use it in an adecuate way.

A prospective analysis, focused on newtechnologies and societys evolution, hasbeen made to know the situation in 2020.

The planet can not keep humanityforever if we continue consuming with

the same pace.

it was decided to create a product wichincreases the sustainable mindset.

Choose the activity you are going torealise on its screen (brushing teeth, hands ...) and it will choose the beststream type for this activity.

It notifies if water consumption isadequate or excessive using the LEDcolor.

It quantifies the water used in the showerand make daily monitoring of differentusers.

Then, it can inform the developmentof each one or suggest competitionsbetween users.

Its visualizes the water used in the showerthrough a tank-screen where water isstored.

The difference with the previous is that thisshows the real and physical water you use.

Wassertank has been selected for beingthe most simple and intuitive way tovisualize the water consumed in theshower.

The tank contains enough water for aproper shower (80 L) and has severalmarks which measure the waterconsumed.

In this case, calculations of fluid or material selection were made.
