  • Lesson & Assessment Overview How To Be An Illustrator Writing Project Objective: Students will analyze how text and graphic features enhance the readers engagement and comprehension of a text. Supporting Text: What Do Illustrators Do? by Eileen Christelow Overview: Students will be asked to write, illustrate and publish a piece of writing in order to experience the importance of graphic features (illustrations) within a text. Students will be expected to use fundamental conventions of writing including capitalization, punctuation and descriptive language. Procedure:

    1. Use creative writing as a foundation for the Illustrator project. 2. Students will write a story of their choice. 3. They will edit stories using My Editing Checklist handout (self-assessment). 4. Students will conference with teacher and go through their writing in an effort to revise

    and edit to reflect correct spelling, capitalization and descriptive words (student conference informal assessment).

    5. Using the foundation of the anchor text, students will be asked to consider layout, number of pages, illustration type and cover art for their own work.

    6. Students will publish their books and share with classmates. 7. Feedback will be given on books based on rough draft and editing, layout, illustrations,

    construction and time management (formative assessment ).
