FOURTH YEAR CAPSTONE PROJECT
BOOMBARDIER AEROSPACE FLEXIBLE WORK CENTRE
PROBLEM STATEMENT To design and refurbish a new flexible work center that is able to assemble all different series (Global 6000, 7000) of aircraft in a single assembly line. DESIGN STATEMENT The purpose of this project was to solve Bombardier Aerospace’s assembly line problem. Bombardier Aerospace uses different assembly workstations and devices to assemble different types/series of aircrafts, which causes many troubles with time management and availability of a free assembly line. Our goal was to make such work stations that provides more flexibility in terms of accommodating different series of aircrafts into all assembly lines and provided more mobility around the fuselage without actually having to move aircraft’s position. RESULT We built a workstation with many new features. The thought process lead to the realization that the two biggest changes that could exist in a different aircraft would be the width and the height. So we provided height adjustment using rack and pinion assembly and extendable platforms to provide width adjustment.
SECOND YEAR DESIGN PROJECT 1
ETCHING PRESS
PROBLEM STATEMENT To design new small intaglio etching press on Autodesk Inventor tweaking the already existing for better performance with minute details provided by the professor. DESIGN SOLUTION I suggested to add laser sensors right in the beginning of the rollers where the sheet enters which detects the presence of sheet metal which further leads to motorized rollers rotating at certain speed to deliver faster prints. RESULT
SECOND YEAR DESIGN PROJECT 2
MOTORISED TROLLEY
PROBLEM STATEMENT To design test and build prototype for a trolley that can carry a standard sized oxygen cylinder upstairs in hospitals. DESIGN SOLUTION A conventional trolley design with a Tri-‐Star wheel assembly was proposed after a number of sessions of brainstorming. The applicability, practicality cost and the case of building was considered along with the design being interactive. The team was divided in 3 subgroups to make the process more efficient. RESULT The design was awarded the second best design among 56 teams.
INITIATION I joined McMaster Solar Car Project in the beginning of the third year. The team at that time as in a process of building the all new car after four years of gap. After going into couple of meetings I was asked to lead the chassis, which is a sub-‐group of mechanical team. First few weeks were more like a catch up time for me knowing how to team functions and what are the expectations and deadlines. There were Gantt chart meetings conducted which gave us a clear insight of the tasks and the deadlines. PROJECTS The projects I am entitled to work on are typically based on the chassis of the car. The design that is being used is an alternation and revision of the design used in earlier cars. My main duties include:
Ø Analyzing the design of the chassis and make amendments. Ø Work on suspension installation points and positioning of the steering rack and
pinion column. Ø Perform Finite element Analysis (FEA) Ø Estimate the amount of metal required to make the chassis. This includes working
with the business and manufacturing team..
THIRD YEAR DESIGN PROJECT ROBOWALKER PROBLEM STATEMENT To design and compute a project that aids common man’s problem in the present world. DESIGN STATEMENT The purpose of this device, called the Robowalker, is to assist people who have trouble walking, such as paraplegics or the elderly. The device would be design to assist people in carrying approximately 60% of their body weight to take stress off of leg joints, muscles and bones by providing a torque at the knee joint. Although, the control system part was not in the scope of this project. RESULT We successfully created an AutoCAD assembly to demonstrate the full idea behind the project.
