  • The Bundle project consisted of taking a variety of items and taping them together in a random matter and then cut in half to reveal a series of spaces and conditions. These spaces were then studied intensively using a variety of techniques and mediums to further understand how to create and understand a space in its entirety. The bundle consisted of a dog bowl, pig bank, whale toy, sponge, recorder, two dif-ferent balls and a ribbed tube. The discovered theme of the bundle was an idea of transparency at various scales and approaches as well as a sense of movement of the objects in the half. A free hand drawing was the first step in understanding the quality of spaces fallowed by a series of models.

The Bundle was thought of as a sold (above) made of a wood, as a series of linear elements (bottom left) made of basswood, and as a series of planes (bottom right) made of paper. Each model explored a con-dition of transparency, density or motion within the original bundle..

  • Technology was used as another me-dium to explore the conditions of the bundle. Rhino was used to create a 3d model which was then sliced to al-low closer examination of the spaces within. One slice was then taken and rendered as well as printed by a 3d printer. Views are seen that cannot be observed in the original bundle.

The Deleware House is a housing project designed for Delaware Park in Buffalo New York. The massive park is an Olmstead creation in Buffalo, lined with historic mansions and large museums and art galleries. The site of the house is located on a ridge overlooking the lake, Japanese Gar-dens, Albright Knox Art Museum, Erie County Historical Society and the city beyond that. The site also contains a pedes-trian foot path and located adjacent to a major inner city ex-pressway. The design of the house was meant to push off the ridge and capture the views of the park and gardens with massive windows while keeping a sense of complete privacy. The house turns its windowless back to the urban community behind and uses a single bar and a single circulation to emphasize the single directional view experienced throughout the house.

A Gated Community, located on the edge of Buffalos Lovejoy Neighborhood, created a low security prison and suburban housing complex as well as a community destination, serving as a market ar-cade , alley like shopping and service center. The alley lies on the main political and economic line with the prison sitting in Buffalo and the suburban housing and complex re-siding in the adjacent town of Sloan. The two populations face each other as an attempt to help those incarcerated become more familiar with daily life while reminding the public of what could happen. The roof of the arcade and facade of the housing tower take on the rhythm of the lots across the street and create a waving canopy. The re-maining land is given back to the community in an effort to create a large park to extend the services and activities of the gated community.

  • Monolith is a design for an architectural office / mixed use building in downtown Buffalo. The design of Monolith is to re-introduce the architect into the city as a mystical and supernatural pres-ence, claiming attention and remaining a mystery to the city of buffalo. Monolith as serves as a mirror and memorial to a city with once great architectural presence. Standing 14 floors and 225 feet tall, the tower is clad seamlessly by super reflective black glass. The building, while covered in glass, lacks windows and instead, the top most occupied floors, draw light from a light well / atrium that cascades from the roof of the building. Natural light also is reflected through offset panels that line the walls of each floor which also work to prevent traditional appearance of an office building at night, playing true to the mystery by almost dissolving in the night.

  • The volume of the building is a simple rectalinear shape that is meant to mimic the standard shape of a traditional office buildings. the volume is also a more dominant shape against nature and with a set of proportions that are suggested to be the most visually appealing. Ratios are a historical design principal perfected by the egyptians and Greeks. The buildings volume will no doubt be a rectalinear volume deigned classically through proportions/ratios that create the desired effectof a monolithic structre and in considerationof the site and program size of the building.

The volume of the building is a simple rectalinear shape that is meant to mimic the standard shape of a traditional office buildings. the volume is also a more dominant shape against nature and with a set of proportions that are suggested to be the most visually appealing. Ratios are a historical design principal perfected by the egyptians and Greeks. The buildings volume will no doubt be a rectalinear volume deigned classically through proportions/ratios that create the desired effectof a monolithic structre and in considerationof the site and program size of the building.

Fire exits work through the stairs in each core. The exits proceed to the basement (Entrance) Level and then exit using the massive entry ramp.

Structure for the tower is through site cast concrete. The two main cores provide the main support and foundation. The two wider walls are also site cast but could be pre-cast, and work as a vierendeel truss. The floor plates are able to span the en-tire distance and interlock into the truss walls.

  • Living Wall was a project that worked from form/concept to planning/refining to full scale build/instal-lation. The form began as a single mass with one line, one cut and one transition. The project was to be thought of as a micro dwelling for at least six people. Each studio divided into two groups of roughly four students to plan and build the dwellings at full scale. As a team, the responsibility of craft and structural planning was very important to ensure the final piece could stand for two years at a local public sculpture park where all projects were connected into a living wall of micro dwellings. This particular project was built in four parts, the two lower legs and the upper mass (two pieces). Nine people could occupy the spaces created inside and out. The night of installation, students spent the night in each others projects.Other Group Members: Carl Stanbro, Bo-Asheley Brindley, Christine Liou.

  • Hospes: 233 Allen St. is a residential complex for the Allen District of Buffalo, NY. A hostel ac-commodates a transient population and apartment dwellings serve a more permanent population. The two differ in stay duration, but are both comprised of transitioning singles. The form is monolithic and carves at different scales: the courtyard, the urban entrance, the unit collective and the individual. Materi-ally, the building consists of two facades. The outer street facades are a concrete mixed with copper slag, meant to turn greenish blue, to relate to the historic use of copper along Allen and the harshness of the city. The inner courtyard facades consist of horizontal wood slats to create a more welcoming and warm space as the courtyard serves as the lobby for all programs of the building (no program has direct ac-cess from the street). The first floor is glass with programs that bring the permanent, public and transient populations together. These programs are a cafe, retail and automart (Vending style convenience store).Project Partner: Christine Liou

The outer street facades are concrete mixed with copper slag meant to turn greenish blue, creating a relationship to the historic use of copper along Allen Sreet as well as the harshness of urban life. The inner courtyard facades consist of horizontal wood slats to create a more welcoming and warm space as the courtyard serves as the lobby for all

populations mix together. The programs are a caf, retail, and automart (vending style convenience store).

  • Link is a boarder station ferry terminal that connects Spain to Morocco as well as Europe to Africa via its location in Tarifa, Spain on the shores or the Strait of Gibraltar. its prominent location at the western end of the Mediterranean defines it as a monumental beacon in the worlds busiest sea way. Tarifa, south-ern-most point of Europe, has a population of 18,000. The town has a variety of attractions for vacationing visitors: ancient roman ruins, beaches, a castle, and old fortifications. However, because Africa is only 10 miles away to the south, there are many commercial ships and local authorities must be aware of illegal trafficking Project Partner: Christine Liou

  • To address the sensitive traffic issues, the vehicular circulation is raised to create a defined and secure traffic flow on and off ferry boats, while creating a large open space below an umbrella-like pavilion. Within this open space, pedestrians can move freely to seek shade offices, ticketing, tourist information, a caf, and a gift shop. A canopy structure shades the vehicular traffic from the hot arid climate and appears to float above the elevated road deck. Suspended by cables from two masts, the canopy is visible from Africa and ships passing through the strait of Gibraltar. This canopy over the vehicular traffic addresses the Mediterranean climate of warm summers and mild winters. It is long-span steel adapted to an organically shaped grid, clad with steel sheeting to make it appear lighter. By contrast, the elevated vehicular circulation is held up by tree-shaped steel structural components that span up to 80, and 10 to 30 in height. These tree-shaped components delineate a path for pedestrians. Pedestrians are free to move about underneath the road structure. It is a large space open to the elements, but still protected from sun and rain. Ticketing, duty free shopping, and other leisurely activity provide distractions for the bored pedestrian waiting to board the ferry.
