TULANE STUDY ABROAD: JAPAN

Japanese Consulate

new orleans, lasummer 2008

Tulane’s Japan program consisted of a two-week visit to Japan followed by an eight-week studio back at Tulane. The project was a Japanese consulate on Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. Drawing from the ex-tensive landscapes documented in Japan, this collection of small-scale structures is organized to form an ar-ray of courtyard spaces. The building parti provided a central koi pond, while the micro gestures designate courtyards oriented towards their program. The materiality is kept light-weight to pay homage to Japanese tradition in addition to providing maximum daylighting. Wood louvers give relief to the structures’ façades. The roofscape was viewed as a series of folds, aiming to push the boundaries of rigidity and blend the varying scales of each structure.

PERMEABLE INTERIORITY

rIVerFront hotel

new orleans, lasprIng 2008

Permeable Interiority was an explora-tion of how interior space can be shaped by sunlight and landscape. The hotel features a broad atrium spanning the entire building. At cer-tain floors, voids are cut to provide greenscape to the patrons. This al-lows more sunlight to flood the atrium, in addition to breaking the monotony of a typical floor slab. The voids are located and sized according to the most beneficial ventilation and sun-light gain. These skycourts are linked by landscaped pathways that cut across the atrium for easy access, as well as providing more vegetation to the site. The screen system is based on a simple grid formed from the win-dow treatments. Vertical circulation is positioned within the atrium to give occupants a view out through the space and, at particular moments, towards the river.

THESIS DEVELOPMENT

Architecture VerdoyAnt

new orleAns, lAFAll 2009-spring 2010

The thesis began as an analysis of urban inhabitance in the city cen-ter. Due to both its abundancy and severe lack of response to place, the high-rise typology is being chal-lenged through an intersection of structure with landscape. Building upon New Orleans’ unique relation-ship between vegetation and built space, landscaped circulation is viewed as the vehicle through which all elements of the site are intercon-nected. Public domains are extruded off the ground plane to draw users up and through the building while also spreading users throughout the day. A mixed-use, high-density devel-opment is being proposed to rein-vigorate an otherwise underrealized area of downtown.

RECREATION ON THE RIVER

recreAtion center

Algiers point, lAFAll 2006

This project called for a recreation center in between the levees at Algiers Point, directly across the Mis-sissippi River from downtown New Orleans. A ground plane was desig-nated to bridge over both levees so views out of the individual structures could be maximized. This plane’s punctures are the resultant of a grid composed from offsetting topograph-ic lines. The program was divided ac-cording to its similarities and applied to four free-standing buildings. The form of these structures was a explo-ration of the dynamic of a continual surface, seeing how spaces could be formed by a single folding plane. The composition of these pieces was derived from specific viewpoints as well as contextual lines.

URBANbuild

single-FAmily house proposAl

new orleAns, lAFAll 2008

This was a proposed prototype for the URBANbuild studio. A split-level scheme was developed to explore the benefits of a partially-raised house. The project began by divid-ing the program into essential and non-essential elements. The non-essential, or porch, living room, and interior courtyard, remained at the street level to maintain a relationship with the context. The essential space was lifted well above the flood plane to create privacy. This provided inhabitable space underneath the house for parking or storage. Glazing was implemented to create views into the varying sections of the house, in-forming a sense a continuity through-out the structure.

PRESERVATION STUDIO

improVements to FAubourg mArigny

new orleAns, lAFAll 2009

This preservation studio produced an investigative document meant to improve the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. This individual project dealt with the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Dauphine Street. His-torically, this had been a node for commercial activity, with businesses ranging from food distribution to shoe repair. However, the area has been neglected recently with many of the structures sitting abandoned. The proposal aims to enliven the intersec-tion through a renovation of each structure’s façade, reprogramming of the interior, and implementing ele-ments focused on attracting con-sumers to the site. Curb bump-outs provide for easier parking and give the neighborhood the notion to re-claim this area. Existing façades are supplemented by restored balconies and galleries.

URBANbuild

single-FAmily house

new orleAns, lAFAll 2008-spring 2009

URBANbuild is an integrated studio where fall semester students design and develop a 1,200sf single-family residence for Central City, resulting with a set of construction docu-ments. In the spring semester, students have the opportunity to construct the scheme, providing a hands-on experience as to how the construc-tion process is performed. Although incorporating contemporary and ‘green’ features, the scheme’s form is kept simple to emphasize the layer of operable shutters wrapping two edges of the house. These shutters provide both sun shading and hur-ricane protection, as well as privatiz-ing the front and back porches. The shed roof allows for a double-height living area in addition to a means for hiding mechanical equipment. This three-bedroom, two-bath house was sold early fall 2009 and featured in Dwell magazine in January 2010.
