Lacina Heitler: Blow-Dry Salon / Retail / CommercialDrybar | National Roll-OutProject Phases: DD, LPC, CD, DoB, CA

Drybar’s motto is “no cuts, no color, only blowouts.” The branding and interior design was designed in-house and has expanded from a one-off location into a national success currently located in 5 states and 25 locations. The identity and interior environment were devel-oped together to create a seamless brand identity of a bright playful atmosphere for ladies of any age with pops of color and witty and clever furnishings, accessories and marketing. Themed to look like a bar, the design is built around a 4’-6” module which allows for flex-ibility in design when adapting to various tenant locations.

Lacina Heitler: Makeup Retail / CommercialBlushington | West Hollywood, CA Project Phases: PD, SD, DD, CD, DoB, CA

Blushington is a new makeup service concept where clients come in to get makeup applied by industry professionals. Customers are greeted at reception with a feature wall comprised of dual magnification compact mirrors. The iconography of the circle is carried throughout the design in millwork details and material choices. The store is arranged into “rooms” each containing 4 stations that are reimagined as a riff on the old-style Hollywood vanities. Long pink drapery disappears into the ceiling and is used throughout to add movement, implied space separation and is used as a visual link so stations appear to float detached from the walls. The flooring material is an oversized herringbone pattern and mirrors the recessed illuminated ceiling cove.

Restaurant ConceptProvenance | Concord, MAProject Phases: Concept Design; Space Planning

Located in a town bursting with rich history and tradition, Prov-enance was to capture the essence of the local charm and aesthet-ics while infusing a modern and playful interior theme expanding on these traditions.

Located on the second floor of the old Train Depot, the entry to the restaurant is through the main staircase which is flanked on one side by wood paneling that is traditional in feel yet not excessively orna-mental. Arriving in the restaurant in the heart of the activity which is the bar/lounge area, has a relaxed feel punctuated by elements of interest such as an eye-catching chandelier, banquette seating and mirrored wood and marble bar. This is seen as more informal/relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. The bar can become a destination and/or double as a waiting area for patrons.

As a result of repurposing an existing structure there are many ele-ments in the space that compete for the eye - windows, columns, elevator, skylight and angled ceiling lines. The intention was to re-store order to this inherently symmetrical building by placing the bar on axis of the windows thereby making it a focal point of the room.

The rear dining room is the most formal of the three areas. The long wall is flanked by a banquette where the seating can be a mixture of 2 or 4 tops. Two round tables are added to visually add interest and flexibility. This room, as it is far enough away from the other dining room would also lend itself perfectly to be a private dining room.

A lot of the richness, playfulness and visual excitement comes from the furnishings, finishes and textures. As one travels through the whole of the restaurant these textures reference each other in color and style to create a cohesive yet exciting experience.

Furniture Design / LightingHelloHelio | New York, NYCLU Foundation Competition: Finalist

HelloHelio is a responsive sculptural lighting element which is integrated into modular street furniture to inspire, inform and engage various types of outdoor activity. The elegant structural canopy slowly pivots, following the sun, to maximize the energy captured through integrated photovoltaics. At night, the stored energy powers embedded, ultra-efficient LED lighting creating an even ambient pool of light—all the while, slowly pivoting back to ready itself for the next day’s solar harvesting.

The base is designed to support a variety of uses. In its most basic form, as a lightpost, the base acts as the roots anchoring the HelloHelio to the ground. On top of this, a modular system of components can be added for different programmatic uses. The goal of the modularity is to keep production costs low while creating choice and opporunity in design.

PhotovoltaicsTo maximize energy capture, HelloHelio slowly pivots to follow the path of the sun throughout the day.

Solar cells embedded in the structure provide the energy necessary to illuminate and pivot the canopy.

Affinium™ LED LightingLED lighting, integrated into the canopy, is used for its very minimal power consumption and longevity.

The flexibility of the LED string system follows the canopy curvature creating a continuous band of light.

Locating lighting on the underside of the canopy directs light down to illuminate the immediate surroundings thereby minimizing light pollution.*image courtesy of Philips

Recycled Aluminum The framework of the HelloHelio is made from extruded recycled aluminum.

Recycling aluminum is more cost effective and environmentally responsible than extracting virgin aluminum.

Recycling, by nature, does not degrade the molecular makeup, allowing the HelloHelio framework to be disassembled and recycled indefinitely.

Wood Seating The bench seats are made from FSC certified wood to insure environmental responsibility.

HelloHelio takes the familiar materials of a traditional park bench and reinterprets them. Wood, used as a continuous surface, creates a comfortable seat that wears well over time.

MechanicsThe canopy is connected to the base through a gear shaft which controls the fluid pivot motion.

As a result of the slow diurnal swings, minimal energy is needed to actively pivot the canopy on the upswing.

On the downswing, the gears work in resistance, harnessing the force of gravity to pivot the canopy thereby increasing energy efficiency.

Bioclimatic Effects on Solar Resource

Masters Thesis ProposalEnhancing Interior Environmental Control Systems with Intelligent Desiccant Materials | Mumbai International Airport, Mumbai, India

Experiential Light Modulation of Proposal

If we consider and harness the relationship between humidity, en-vironment and structure within a building application we can then experience the “process of performance” through visible light modu-lation as the systems ebb and flow, collecting and removing water, while responding to interior and exterior conditions.

The user is then able to understand and participate in a connection between what is traditionally regarded as separate entities—building and environment.

By bringing systems that are traditionally banished to basements, and almost in a way glorifying them, by distributing the functions across a roof membrane allows it to visibly respond to dynamic bioclimatic conditions. The systems are now able to participate in a social realm but just as importantly they are able to participate in a quantifiable and imperative global-realm as it literally works to de-crease energy consumption, harvest water for consumption in order to maintaining interior comfort levels.

Bergen Street Studio: Residential / Renvation147 Congress Street | Brooklyn, NYProject Phases: DD, LPC, CD, DoB, CA

Located in a landmrked district, this original 2-story house with a tower was approved by the Lanmarks Planning Commision for the addition of a 3rd-story Mansard thereby retaining the historical texture of the neighborhood. The first floor renovation consisted of a new kitchen, custom millwork in the dining and living rooms, new air delivery throughout and new insulation on all walls. The second floor was reconfigured from a 3-bedroom to 2-bedroom to improve circulation and increase bedroom sizes. The addition of the 3rd floor to accomodate a master suite and rear terrace. Contrasting the exterior facades, the 3rd floor interior was designed to achieve a sparse, japenese-inspired aesthetic emphasising natural materials.

This 4-story apartment building was a gut renovation / combination of 4 separate flats. The building was not located in a landmarked area which allowed for a subtle yet pronounced transformation of the front facade. The new openings in the facade were framed with a 4” cor-ten steel frame with inset wood panelling. Vertical connections were made both visually and through orientation. At the entry was a 3-story forced perspective atrium with balconies for interior and exterior connections. The staircase ascended around a hollow translucent recycled resin chamber to bring light to the interior floor plate. High velocity small duct system was used to maximize floor to ceiling heights.
