1 Student’s DormitoriesIntroduction

The chosen subject is Student's Dormitories.

Seeing the expansive tendency of the university

education in the Republic of Kosovo,

and also seeing the lack of current minimal

life conditions of the existing student's houses

I was forced to choose the subject Student's Dormitory.

I wanted to concentrate on the solution to produce to the

students as many as optimal and essential conditions for

student's life (sleep, food) education and

free time (sport and recreation).

The concept

The dormitories are applying a minimalist architecture

based on the essential forms of rationalism and functionalism.

Also, the module is inspired by Le Corbusier.

The reason why focusing on these styles is that to achieve

the optimal performance of the student so by removing all

the ornaments and unnecessary and dysfunctional

loads (Adolph Loos, Ornament and Crime).

So the aforementioned building is not the Palace of

Versailles or flashy baroque and rococo salon that will

confuse students and at the same time will also rise the

costs of construction and maintenance, but a functional

object where conformism reaches the highest standards

of living and welfare of the student in XXI century.

So the whole concept of the ground floors is shaped following

the functionalism and rationalism. Each element is designed

taking into account that communication distances to be as

shorter and spaces to be as essential and as optimal

concerning dimensions as well as by the volume

(because of the cost of construction and maintenance, heating, etc.).

Student’s Dormitories

The basic concept for the facade where parts of the

facade are open but also closed,

is derived from the human eye.

Eye also represents and symbolizes the human

mind Illuminism where in this case, students should

be enlighted. So my concept for the façade is not

naive imitation of the shape of

the human eye which in this case F.L.Wright says:

"You can not pour concrete in steel and roses".

But the conceptual mechanism of the eye

“open / closed” the philosophical concept has derived

from it to the facade of the dormitory.

Where the individual user opens or closes the window,

same as the human eye when is eager for light,

literally or figuratively when he is thirsty for knowledge.

Also the brise-soleil follows the same

principle of retina of the eye as well is used as a

filter which directs its own amount of

light that has to enter into the student's room.

The Chapel of St. Joseph

Chapel of St. JosephThe location of the construction site where

the chapel is going to be built is on the Cemeteries of the Dol village in Gjakova,

on a relatively flat terrain. The access to the chapel is achieved

by following the 6 meter wide road that is specifically destined for the usage of

the graveyard and the chapel. The positioning of the building

fulfills the requirements for the best view which in this case is on the south-west.

This creates better landscape for the viewers and also better enlightenment for the hall

of the prayer. The entire sight is destined to be planted with plenty of vegetation. On the site is foreseen the design of

pavements, pedestrian paths, several benches for siting and the

space for outdoor ceremonies.

The Chapel of St. Joseph

Chapel of St. JosephSince the very beginning of design,

at the very first sketches the basic idea was to create volumes of contemporary architecture.

While looking the latest trend in the country that is still keen on the outdated forms of sacred neoclassical architecture, such as

neo-romanticism, neo-baroque or neo-Gothic, the investor and architects decided to accept

a modern approach towards architecture while distancing them-self from the eclectic architectural tendencies. The whole concept of design was to create a modern functional building that would fit perfectly in the green and prairie surroundings. The building would require some conditions to fulfill such as the

functionality, harmony, aesthetics and stability. All these elements combined create a structure

that intersects sculptural, rational and contemporary values. The need of expanding

the modern waves of style in the country were one of the main reasons for the choosing

the particular style. The main goal of the designers was to create a powerful

architectural sculpture whose exterior redefines its surroundings, while the interior

helps experience deeper feelings and emotions. The form is derived from a simple geometrical

rectangular shape that enables maximal usage and functionality. The building consists

of two main parts. The first one is the praying hall with altar. Inside praying hall includes

also the coffin chamber for temporary storing the coffin. The second part is the vertical

bell-tower that emphasizes the spiritual concept towards the heavens.

The cross formed from the subtraction of the volumes of one of the faces of the bell tower enables to distinguish the Christian graveyard.
