40 hours before the start of this art, music, and film festival in Cleveland, we realized that direct sunlight was making this space uncomfortably hot. A quick, cheap, and effective solution was required. It needed to be able to be put up in a matter of hours and make no noticeable change to the space after being taken down. I saw an opportunity to diffuse the light while maintaining natural illumination and providing a signature visual element for both the interior and exterior spaces. A total of 2 hours were spent figuring out how it would go together [see below] and it took another 5 hours to install. Materials costs totaled $8.

The project’s geometry was determined by [clockwise from top left] copying the volume of the adjacent warehouses, lifting that mass onto a pedestal, and carving into that set in order to create views up and through the building, multi-story interior spaces, truck access, and a sheltered exterior space. These carves were populated with folding wood-paneled inserts to form stairs and patios, screen views and contain service spaces between the inserts and the primary volumes.

Sculpture has long had a contentious relation-ships with its pedestal. Though once an essen-tial part of sculpture akin to painting’s frame, this mediating device has been alternately fe-tishized or derided by modern sculptors and curators alike. A pedestal serves to separate sculpture from life’s encumbrances, enabling experiences that transcend one’s daily real-ity. Art is a luxury inevitably detached from the everyday. When this detachment breaks down, are transcendent artistic experiences still possible?

Similarly, a tension exists in many contempo-rary museums between art and commerce, between galleries and now-ubiquitous an-cillary functions like shopping, dining, and entertainment. A once delicate balance has become unbalanced, diminishing the impor-tance of artifacts in art museums. Through an architectural play on the sculpture/pedestal

relationship, we propose that architecture can be a powerful force in a reestablish of the arti-fact’s preeminence.

Architecturally, this project is developed from two separate but codependent rectangular volumes. The first is a duplicate of the adja-cent warehouses (1) containing the galleries, the second a pedestal containing support and public functions (2). Three monumental sub-tractions from these volumes gesture to ad-jacent landmarks including the Puente de la Mujer, Frigate Presidente Sarmiento and the Edificio Libertador (3). These subtractions also provide for a loading area, auditorium and outdoor gallery, respectively. Each is also thought of as an opportunity to frame new ways to experience artistic artifacts and per-formances. Enabling these new experiences are faceted wood-surfaced constructions in-serted into each subtraction (4).

Of particular emphasis is the central subtrac-tion, in which a monumental stair also serves as auditorium seating with an integrated

stage, and frames views of Mujer and Liber-tador at its ends. Split roughly in half by this central space, the remainder of the pedestal provides support space and a single 12m tall gallery, in addition to a rentable south side containing museum shop, café, and a large multi-purpose space, all opening onto an out-door gallery and social space framed by the museum itself and the adjacent Frigate. Ac-cess to the upper volume is possible through the central monumental stair and two public elevators, along with two glass-enclosed fire stairs.

The building materials are inspired by the sculpture of Constantin Brancusi, whose pieces are carved and conflated with their pedestals in ways similar to this project. Clad in beige glazed brick, board-formed concrete, and rich hardwood, the museum is a luxuri-ous jewelry box for art objects, an architec-ture both protective and accessible.

In collaboration with Rustbelt Welding, I designed and fabricated this staircase in a loft apartment in Cleveland, OH. The pre-existing design for the staircase was discovered to be based on mistaken measurements. With less than a week until the deadline for complete installation, I completely reconfigured the stair and created a set of fabrication documents, allowing us to meet the deadline.

Because the apartment was being lived in continuously, we needed to minimize on-site installation time. We built the stair in our shop in four major segments. These were then driven to the site, hoisted into place, bolted to the reinforced walls, and welded together over the course of one day.

I was approached by SPACES, a not-for-profit art gallery in Cleveland, to create a temporary installation for their annual benefit. The task was to divide the photo booth from the rest of the event space and to mitigate disturbance from flash photography while maintaining some degree of openness and continuity in the space. The solution was to divide the domain of the wall into regions, each of which comprised of planes that converged on a particular point.

During my internship at Bostwick Design Partnership, I was on the schematic design team for this library on the east side of Cleveland. I was responsible for coming up with design variations on a defined theme as well as producing models and drawings for internal study and client presentations.

At this new building for a recovery clinic in Cleveland, OH, the client wanted a custom set of partition walls. The schedule was compressed to a point where the partitions needed to be designed and built while the building was under construction. The partitions were therefore designated on the construction documents as “furniture by owner” and StudioTECHNE Architects built them ourselves. I was part of the design, fabrication, and installation team.

Once the design was finalized and we had built and tested full-scale mockups, we moved into production of the 18 identical partition walls. With a colleague, I hand-routed 360 bands of hardboard and 144 hangers, cut and pre-drilled 72 steel posts, transported them to the site, and installed them in coordination with the contractors who were still finishing the building.

Client: SPX Corporation. December 2011 - September 2012. With DXY Solutions, LLC.

DXY Solutions was approached by SPX Service Solutions, a global manufacturer of automotive diagnostic tools, to design and build a smartphone-based vehicle scan tool. SPX’s existing tools provide the user with several stand-alone diagnostic processes and proprietary technical reference sets. I identified a number of new opportunities presented by the smartphone platform to create a tool that would enable the user to see a complete picture of a vehicle’s diagnostic history through time. To that end, the apps were designed around the idea that the base datatype is the vehicle with associated diagnostic information.

Dividing the app into phases and sub-phases

allowed us to react to changes in budget and

schedule, as well as creating viable stand-

alone iterations for testing and release without being done

with the entire project.

The workflow was specified and designed well in advance of the graphic design, giving SPX’s in-house designers a clear brief from which to design the actual graphics of the app. These four early iterations show how the same screen spec is interpreted four different ways.

This method, developed to deal with a project orders of magnitude larger than a typical mobile phone app, formed the seed of the project design and management methodology that DXY has since implemented company-wide. Having a single master document being used to communicate with both clients and developers has been a major part of DXY’s ability to grow and take on larger projects.

Once the client’s in-house designers had

finalized the graphics, the fact that each

was designed from a standard type allowed our development team to build the app with extensive and varied

functions using a minimal set of graphic

resource files.

The existing Echo line of furniture [above] from Forest City Fabricators is comprised of laterally stacked plywood profiles. I designed and produced fabrication documents for the newest additions to the line, the Lounge and Rock chairs [shown below in the shop before assembly.]

In addition to designing the exterior profiles of each chair, I placed hollows within each interior profile which saved 37% of the weight from each chair without sacrificing rigidity or strength.

Client: Oberlin College. August 2008. With Bostwick Design Partnership.

Oberlin College hired Bostwick Design Partnership to convert an existing open pavilion into an all-weather enclosed and conditioned field house. Starting with the existing structure of arched glulam beams and a barrel-vaulted roof, exterior walls were infilled, offices were added, and HVAC systems were installed, creating a new four-season practice facility for Oberlin’s teams.

I was responsible for revising this construction document set on a tight deadline in order to reflect a total overhaul of the exterior cladding as well as changes to the layouts of the interior spaces.

The Cleveland International School is conceived of as a means by which students are progressively socialized into the city at large. To this end, the building is designed around points of “input” and “output” with relation to the city. These interface points are programmatic areas where things are exchanged or distributed, cultural, material, intellectual, or otherwise. The distribution of these interface points informs the arrangement of axes across the site, each corresponding to a piece of the program. This loosely radial scheme facilitates the student’s transition from a general educational foundation [at the center of the school] to a targeted and customized learning program [closest to the perimeter of the site.]

Five general schematic options for the arrangement & articulation of the ground plane in the space. The courtyard is not accessible to the general public.

During my time as an intern there, Bostwick Design Partnership was asked to develop a permanent sculptural installation to occupy the fifth-floor courtyard at the Cleveland Clinic’s Miller Family Pavilion. Working on a team under supervising architect Bryan Wahl, I built presentation models, designed schematic iterations, produced presentation documents and met with the clients.

Total time from initial concept to debut exhibition was 72 hours. Sketches were worked out in two hours, measured production documents in another three hours, fabrication turnaround was 36 hours and assembly was quick and seamless on the first try.

In collaboration with Rustbelt Welding, a Cleveland-based fabrication and shop, I designed this series of flat-packable steel furniture. The profiles are cut out of 1/4” plate steel and fit together exclusively by friction. No fasteners or glue are used.

With DXY, I was asked to provide conceptual design for a mobile phone application that would allow riders to access real-time information about the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s bus and passenger rail service. This proposal was based around the recognition that the mobile phone platform offers an opportunity to present RTA as a viable option for people who might otherwise choose to drive, expanding the ridership base beyond people who use it out of necessity. To this end, the workflow opens with an open-ended map illustrating all of the possible routes departing from the user’s current location.
