This script aims at facing the problems concerning outdoor paving. As for the paving structure I took into consideration the fact that paving is not only a matter of floor covering, but also a complex series of elements, all different for characteristics and performances. There-fore, the subject was analyzed also from a more operational point of view, where the correct design, according to the national and Euro-pean regulations, as well as the exhaustive knowledge of materials did make the difference. However, the problem I encountered is that both the economic and environmental component tend to prevail on the quality and final design of these works. The consequent expendi-ture of money for more and more frequent maintenance interventions, due to weak design, and the exploitation of non-renewable resources are playing a fundamental role in the choice of paving systems, es-pecially as regards outdoor spaces for public use. For this work I considered as resources what at the present time are deemed waste materials, trying to optimize the materials that, for different reasons, have been put aside.
WOOD, STONE, TERRACOTTA and SOIL. In any case, the material is the real protagonist. It is vital to study, know and inquire it in order to utilize it at best and enhance it through a correct laying according to its characteristics . The challenge was that of using the above cited materials in a context of high ecological interest, such as PMVL. Its complex position, between the built-area of 4 cities in the province of Milan, gives the possibility to use those paving systems in connection with the surrounding landscape, which can be more or less naturalistic, in order to realize paving areas, roads, tracks and ways.

It’s a project of social housing based in Figino, a residential quarter located north-west of Milan next to other 3 cities: Pero, Rho and Settimo Milanese. The project surface is situated in the southern part of the Figino built-up area and takes up part of a town agricultural area. The project envisages the realization of one private housing estate con-
sisting in 16 apartments available in three principal typologies: simplex two-roomed flat, duplex and four-roomed flat. It’s com-posed of 4 floors above ground and the apartments are served by one central staircase with an elevator that connects all floors. Moreover, the entrance at the single unity is guaranteed by a landing which is structurally independent from the house and is located on the north side of the build-ing. Lastly, on the roof there is a bioclimatic glasshouse that both allows the placement of a heat pump for the heating/cooling system of rooms and offers the possibility to have a space for social aggregation.
The project theme can be described by the motto “Low or High? Me-dium Technologies”. Indeed, my goal was to make the building as sus-tainable as possible through the medium technologies, which I consider to be the best. The priority was to introduce technological solutions in three
different materials - WOOD, CONCRETE and STEEL - that
respect the environment, are innovative and always with an eye on sus-tainability, dominant feature of all the materials involved.
The main characteristics of the project are the PREFABRICATION, an easier system of construction with the technologies in wood and steel , as well as the realization of a unique open space for SOCIAL AGGREGATION made available for the entire building. I decided to create this open space on the roof because the presence of the park on the ground floor is already an opportunity to meet people. That’s why a big CONSERVATORY was created which performs the above cited function, having also bioclimatic features: the air that warms up inside the conservatory in winter is used to heat the apartments, together with a heat pump. By means of the pipes that pass through the slots, the warm air is piped into the rooms of the building, where the ventilation grids are located in correspondence with services.

“(...) un luogo architettonico dove la forma e la razionalità delle costruzioni, interpreti della pietà e del significato del cim-itero, siano un’alternativa alla crescita brutta e disordinata della città moderna. Un luogo architettonico, il cimitero come gli altri edifici pubblici, capace di costruire la memoria e la volontà collettiva della città”.
