  • The Bowery Boogie music library provides a busy and rapidly changing zone of New York City with a place for collective gathering and listening.

In designing a contemporary library the question what exactly is a library? must be raised. Having visited SPL [The Seattle Public Library by OMA] prior to tackling this question, it prompted the decision to explore the implications of different design methodologies. I began designing in section, finding relationships beween the flooors and using the floor-plate itself to create differentiated spaces without the use of walls. Through being sensative to the site context I reinterpereted the library program to reflect the rich history of the Bowery. Thus I focused on the cultural exchanges that occured through the music produced and performed on the Lower East Side and the culture which it has spurned. The Bowery Boogie is a feeder and a container for music. It contains diverse display areas, listening pods, and a bicycle garage.

  • The Paragon challenges the repetitiveness and isolationist nature of student housing by providing different spacial configurations in each dorm room and large scale public spaces on

    every floor.

Large-scale housing has posed a big problem to architects for as long as the era of the apartment has existed. In this project our team attempted to use the through-street condition of the site to combat the various negative associations we had with student housing such as a lack of connection to ones space, a lack of unique spaces, a lack of interaction with the surrounding neighborhood and a lack of communal spaces that work. Through the use of rotational symmetry a dynamic inner court was created that serves as both a bridge between two streets and a public garden. The dorm-rooms are all pushed to the facade of the building and given different orientations to provide for unique conditions and maximum sun exposure. The public programs such as kitchens, gyms and study rooms were organized in section around a large stair, alternating programs from floor-to-floor to maximize student interaction.

  • The 'Metropolitan Reef' improves the way we interact with city sanctioned

street furniture. A modernized hybrid-design of connects multple

    functions in one user-friendly assembly.

Current municipal street furniture is explicitly installed as seperate programs which "dot" the sidewalk in an unplanned and unconnected manner. These city/state sanctioned street furnishings include, but are not limited to, phone booths, bike racks, bus stops, benches, & mailboxes. Through conducting a broad ranging study on the changing streetscape of New York, we saw the need for change; both formally and functionally. By combining select programs, we created the Metropolitan Reef; a combined Bike Rack, Bus Stop and modern take on the Phone Booth. The benefits of joining these programs into one efficiant unit are plentiful, practical and above all symbiotic. The joints and shared programs create a 'reeflike' unification of multiple functions, encouraging the use of public transit, maximizing commuter convenience, encouraging interaction, and providing a place to utilize to talk on the phone in relative quiet. A 1:1 scale model of the proposal was constructed in steel by our three-person team and presented in the Robert & Hazel Siegel Gallery at The Pratt Institute School of Architecture in the Fall 2010 Honors Review.

MADE EXPRESSLY FOR THE SOUSA MENDES FOUNDATION

    CASA DO PASSALDAWN. DESTITUTION. RESTITUTION.

  • As time passes the Casa do Passal deteriorates. The thesis degree project focuses on the proposal of a fresh schematic design for the entire site, creating a site of concience for the Casa do Passal.

The restoration and design of the Casa do Passal goes well beyond the scope of a simple architectural proposal. It must result in a place that embues dignity, fosters education and ultimately echoes the deeds of Aristides de Sousa Mendes in perpetuity. My Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, both architects, were saved from almost certain death in WWII Europe, along with their immediate family, through the heroic and selfless acts of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Mr. Sousa Mendes was a Portugese diplomat who issued over 30,000 visas, enabling desperate refugees an opportunity to escape the terrors of World War II, against direct government orders. Unfortunately Aristides de Sousa Mendes did not live to see his actions recognized. I have dedicated my thesis to his memory in hopes of jump-starting and seeing to it that his former residence, the Casa Do Passal is restored as a museum and memorial to celebrate his legacy and restore his families honor once and for all.

This now-decrepit home can turn into a meaningful and dignified museum celebrating the life of its former inhabitant- the heroic Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Through the design process have garnished recognition for this newly-landmarked building and project. This freshly harvested recognition, along with an immaginative scheme, kick-started a new era of thought regarding this long-stalled project. My hope is that it will lead to finally making something special occur at this meaningful site.

  • THE ROHR JEWISH CENTER 543 MYRTLE AVENUEBROOKLYN, NY 2009-2011Eric Moed & Brian Schulman

The Rohr Jewish Center is a multifunctional Student Center containing an Art Gallery, Prayer Space, and Event Space. It is a completed project which I designed and managed from start to finish.

Upon recieveing the commission to design the Rohr Jewish Center I was met with a completely raw storfront space. Transforming a space that is slightly under 1000 sq. feet into a functioning student center with multiple programs required careful planning and coordination. In utilizing a clustering of functions and programs, a maximal amount of space could be left open, and therefore usable. Each part of the space contains multiple functions. The kitchen serves as both a bar buffet and display space. The bathroom is clustered togther with a bookshelf, storage closet, coat room and A/V space which serves as a threshold to seperate it from the prayer or gallery space. Therefore the outfitting of the space was all designed custom. Throughout the project co-designer Brian Schulman and I worked closely with the contractor, fabricators, and client to ensure that these goals were met. The space serves over 100 students weekly for Jewish holidays such as the Sabbath and countless others visit the exhibitons in the Hadas Gallery every day.

  • LEspirit Lo So, The Spirit I know, is a modern day Caravanserai; a cultural center in central Rome. It is a place for fellows to study, stay and present their work. The complex seeks to recapture the essence of democratic Roman cultural projects; open to all and readily accessible.

LEspirit Lo So was completed in Rome, Italy as a binary to Le Corbusiers Lespirit Nouveau. It seeks to recapture the essence of the public Roman architecture of antiquity. Rome is a city comprised of relics and ruins that all point to the ideals of bread and circus. Now however with the presence of the Vatican and the myriad of tourist sites, modern culture has been pushed to the cities fringes, its limits. The site for LSpirit Lo So is almost directly across the river from the Vatican. It was important for the program to act as a filter to enable new studies, discoveries and exhibitions as an alternative to the antiquity and religious art that is ever-present in Rome. By making the new spirit of academia, art and science easily available in the center of the city, Rome can once again remain at the fore of cultural progress through direct access for all to cultural programing.
