“Communication is the fundament of succesful desigining”

Vision

The process of designing is an important thing for me, the final product is absolutely not just a good idea, it is the result of a well chosen and well conducted process. I like to design this process by myself so it will fit as good as possible to the problem. Every problem needs its own process to be solved, the better the process the better the solution. It can be a challenge to succeed since every problem is different so every process will be different. Yet, I like this challenge and motivates me to come up with the best solution.

Communication is the fundament of successful designing. This is what I became convinced of the past 2.5 years at Industrial Design. A perfect design can be seen as the product of communi-cation as long communication is conducted and treated with care. When listening carefully to a specific environment a design can be created which is in harmony with its environment’s requirements.During the "life" of a design its environment changes so the design has to be adapted to these changes. Communication is still the main factor which makes it possible to get aware of these changes. Listening to the feedback will lead to a stronger position for the design because it can be perfectly adjusted to its environment's demands. "Just" listen carefully to all impressions you get from the environment, users, stakeholders, colleagues, literature and history. This will make it possible to create an as clear as possible prob-lem description and the solution would not be far away anymore.

Projects

Wearable sensesClient: Maarten Versteeg, Brech Design studio

This project offered a lot freedom which was a great opportu-nity the experiment with lots of techniques and materials. Knowledge has been gathered about textiles, conductive yarns, sewing and also about the possibilities of plastic and magnets. The final product became a bracelet called IMA, a bracelet with a hidden message inside which can only be seen by the people who it belongs to. By means of moving a flux detecting material over the bracelet the invisible integrated magnets become visible and show up a designated word.

Strijp-S design contest: S-tubeClient: Martijn Verkuijl, Gemeente Eindhoven

The purpose was to come up with an innovative solution to keep the city clean, in this case the focus was on Strijp-S, a suburb of Eindhoven. Focusing on the generation of the future an interactive trashcan, the S-tube, has been developed which esthetically fits in its environment. By means of interacting with this facility a person can transport trash through the S-tube to its final destination, a trash collecting depot. During this interaction educational infor-mation will be provided about the trash and makes the user aware of the importance of throwing the trash in the trashcans.

Projects

HealthcareClient: Geert Christiaansen, Philips

During this project the focus was on people having a relatively high risk for hearth failures. To lower this risk I found out that physical exertion would offer the best results. With this in my mind I developed a con-cept which encourages the user to move. Shortly explained the user carries a small device which measures his/hers physical movements during the day. This small device communicates with a screen placed somewhere in the user’s social environment. A metaphorical flower starts growing as long the user moves enough; the healthier the user is the healthier the flower looks. This idea is strongly focusing on the social environments influence on the user’s health and will be an attri-bution to the living environment.

Parking problemClient: Cees Donkers, Gemeente Eindhoven “Het Witte Dorp”, a suburb of Eindhoven had to deal with a parking problem, the number of cars in the village was growing substantially which was resulting in a shortage of parking spaces. This problem description has been suggested but after a question-naire and analysis of the location it became clear that the problem could not be subscribed to the shortage of parking spaces but to the behavior of the inhabitants. The goal became to change this behavior by means of a social website especially for this neighbor-hood. A forum was set up to make the inhabitants talk about the circumstances in their village, focusing mostly on the parking problem. Awareness of the problem would offer the solution.

Experience

By means of doing assignments during the past 2 years I developed my qualities concerning to many competency areas which contribute to the total picture of a designer. Skills have been gathered in user focus, cultural aware-ness, teamwork, communication, technology, developing ideas, developing concepts, self directed and continuous learning and also in descriptive and mathematical mod-eling, designing business processes and form design. Yet, in some competencies (eg. designing business processes and form design) I like to grow more since they are really important for me to become a visionary designer.

Next to this competency development by means of doing assignments I also contributed to an educa-tional activities committee called Educie and to the student recruitment committee called ID voorlichting. Both committees learned me setting up activities by means of planning, communication, creativity, perse-verance and learning from mistakes. I already joined many workshops (photography, adobe illustrator, photoshop, flash, and also workshops like stand building, body language, pitching, Nationaal Ontwerp Weekend) and also trips to museums like Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam, Red dot design Essen, Design museum Gent and design companies like Brech, 250K and Smaac.

Experience

Besides the knowledge I gathered at the study Industrial Design I also travelled to Australia for 4 months, my English language skills became better as well my ability to plan, survive and living independent. I have seen a lot of the county and met many different cultures and people.

In Austalia I did a healthcare related research as well. For this research I interviewed many pharmacists, and cre-ated connections with higher instances concerning to health so that I retrieved the right information I needed.
