2012 ACCA BUENOS AIRES DESIGN COMPETITION

THE 2012 ACCA BUENOS AIRES MUSEUM COMPETITION CALLED FOR THE DESIGN OF A CON-TEMPORARY ART MUSEUM ALONG THE RIO DE LA PLATA. THE COMPETITION SITE WAS LO-CATED AT THE END OF THE PUENTE DE LA MUJER BRIDGE DESIGNED BY SANTIAGO CA-LATRAVA. THIS WAS A SINGLE PHASE COMPETITION WITH ONE BOARD REQUIRED FOR SUBMISSION.

Boston Sound is a contemporary mixed-use building located at the intersec-tion of Boyleston Street and Massachu-setts Avenue. The building is designed to act as a creative hub for students of sound and space. Boston Sound con-tains recording studios, a street-level theater, a sonic library, a materials research facility and a series of gal-leries for sound-based exhibitions. The building is located directly ad-jacent to the berklee college of music campus which makes it a nexus point for interaction between the academic and professional worlds. The vast amount of exhibition space also allows for artists and choreographers to take part in a dialogue focused on the production of sonic environments and events. The building is organized around a light-filled atrium space bound by concrete walls and bridges. This space is vast enough to allow fragments of sound from students, museum patrons, exhibitions, and streetside events to filter in and around the bridges, providing a unique auditory experience.

The center for Immigration is located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Immigration is a vital part of Argentina’s history. Many Argen-tinians are either immigrants or have a family history rooted in another country. Buenos Aires has a long history of political corruption which has led to relative instability, which is ex-acerbated by a population fragmented by uncommon histories and cultures due to immigration. The center for immigration serves as a melting pot for these cultures. The center provides galler-ies and a research center devoted to immigration and the resul-tant emotional/social instabilities that accompany the process of relocation. The center acts as a binding agent for a fragment-ed society, by revealing a common history through immigration.
Mapping internal migration is another way of understanding the process and reason be-hind relocation. This mapping excercise documents the movement of people in response to matches played by primera division football teams. Football is a huge part of Ar-gentinian culture and the response to rival teams and the arrival of opposing fans generates incredible amounts of excitement, activity and passion. The mapping excer-cise indicates a density of flow between various stadiums and teams throughout the primera division. More intense rivalries with larger fan bases are indicated by den-sified areas within the map. In a way the series of images could be a different way of expressing a schedule of the primera division season, one that indicates more than just times and locations but also the relative importance of the individual events.

the center for the appreciation of landscape is located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. The surrounding landscape is formed from mile-long lava flows. The sun-scorched fields of lava rock support almost no life, the only plants being small bushes. Lan-zarote is an unforgiving place with no way to escape the sun and no place to seek refuge from the wind.
The center provides galleries to view the native rock forma-tions in addition to the local plant species. The center also includes a mirador[viewing plat-form] and a number of research labs and housing for researchers.

in oreder to achieve a monolithic appearance the de-sign features a cast concrete wall system that hides all mechanical equipment. This is accomplished by casting mechanical chases into the actual wall sec-tion. Electrical ducts, ventilation ducts and cool-ing coils are all concealed in the wall section. The walls are 2 feet thick on average which eliminates the need for insulation due to the mass. The wall section is kept as light and efficient as possible through by casting air-filled rubber capsules orga-nized along a grid of rebar. This system allowed for perforations to be cast within the wall section which further emphasizes the thickness of the wall and the monolithic appearance.
