Sustainable District
Sustainable districts, such as Vauban and
BedZED, are perfect examples of successful
sustainable models which helped us set a
balanced patchwork of residential, commercial
and insitutional areas for our development
project. The district is built around a main
commercial and pedestrian street. One of our
goals was to minimize as much as possible
the use of automobile. Active transportation
pathways serves the whole district. However,
a street loop goes around the district to
serve local and emergency traffic as well as
buses. A water system was also developed
to collect rain water and to naturally filter
gray and brown waters through the living
machines system. The water system is also
elaborated through bioretention cells, humid

gardens and large basins that also create
attractive environments . Vegetalization
strategy was also used to cool down the
heat islands surrounding the area. Finally, this
sustainable and almost self-sufficient area is
an example of how green communities can also
be convivial and integrated within an urban
context.

Residential lane
One of the issues of this neighborhood is
the lack of playgrounds for children. Located
behind a fire hall, we seized this as an
opportunity to create a playground for kids as
well as adults. Cardiovascular and muscular
training structures are playful ways to keep
kids, adults and firemen in shape. Bumpy
topography scatters a more isolated ground for
a more peaceful area which can be used for
reading and friendly meetings.

Rehabilitation of an industrial neighborhood
The Estimauville area is a small and new
development located between two industrial
neighborhoods. Its major problem is the
urban planning of the main street and its
lack of identity. Our team sought to create a
differentiated transfer zone. Our concept was
based on the ludic element of mazes.

First, an analysis of the traffic in the area helped us outline the
shape of the buildings.Second, an analysis of the local
traffic helped us detail the shape of the buildings. The final shape was then rearranged to prioritize the walking traffic and to create interior courtyards between the
buildings.

Competition overseas
As part of the contest European 10, a project
was developed on the grounds of Gembloux’s
city hall. Many restrictions had to be respected,
namely those concerning the architectural and
plant related heritage, as well as future plans
for an administrative building. The master plan
design was inspired by the circular shape of
the old fortifications. A circular footbridge was
also created to link the historical remains to
the rest of the site. Another footbridge links
the public place to the opposite entrance and
passes over a green space. This bowl-shaped
space is used for free activites while the
slanted sides offer a place for people to lay
down and enjoy the historical site.

Based on several analysis, the centrality of the
City Hall’s location and the great heritage were
the main aspects around which the project was

Botanical Garden
The goal of this project was to create a garden
on 9 m2 piece of land in the Botanical Garden
of Montreal.
This garden, inspired by the Rubik’s Cube, was
designed to create a playful and interactive
place for families. The colorful cubes are
mobile and can also be used as chairs to
rest among the vibrant flower patterns.
One of the main purposes of the Botanical
Garden is to educate the public on the different
plant species. The Rubik Garden exposes
these species and informs the public on their
different sensorial values while stimulating the
senses.

Regional workshop
The study and analysis of this rural area have
led us to examine the cohabitation problem
between residential areas and agricultural
industry. Our main efforts were concentrated
on reconciling these inextricable parties.
Aesthetical, social, and agricultural ideas were

proposed to strengthen the community and to
give value to the major agricultural industry.

The extent of the region required several
interventions: a proposal for peri-urban
agriculture create a boundary between
residential area and intensive agriculture,
development in commercial areas create a
green and safer break with the roads and
coloring flour mills creates landmarks.
