The pavilion is designed for the 24th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The John Stewardson Memorial Competition in Architecture sought a transformative space of separation and connection. I created a space that wasn’t simply a memorial, but instead a design that would allow humans to experience and connect with the memories of the Berlin Wall and it’s fall.
The fall of the Berlin Wall was the beginning of a progressive movement that brought unity amongst the diverse cultures of Germany. The pavilion is a single material with various slits that when folded, become an oscillating tunnel. How a society is more successful with the cohesion of diverse cultures is represented in how the oscillating panels would not be as powerful if not uniquely manipulated. The tunnel creates a united path of travel for all visitors while the remaining ground plane is manipulated to create spaces of lingering and congregation.

Berlin’s master plan has vantage points that extend to unite at the city’s monuments. The Memorial of the Murdered Jews of Europe is a series of similar points without a uniting source. The transformative space seeks to blend both morphologies.

The project site lies 500 meters south of the Brandenburg Gate along the major road, Ebertstraße. The outline of the former Berlin wall is marked by a paving type on the street, acting as an axis of reflection for the human interaction with the architecture occurring at the Memorial of the Murdered Jews of Europe onto the project site.

The corten panels are manipulated to allow vegetation and humans to interact with the pavilion. Where panels are removed from the ground plane, vegetation has the potential to grow. Several panels are folded and twisted to create benches for lingering pedestrians.

The project was in an inter-disciplinary studio of landscape architecture and architecture students, with a strong focus on exploring the other’s discipline. The park is designed to commemorate the ancient brick wall running along the eastern perimeter of the site. The museum is to host any future excavations of the foundation of the ancient wall.
I explored how erosion is the battle of humans effects on non-humans, and non-humans effects on humans. The ancient wall represents this phenomenon. What began as a rigid, man made structure eroded over time to become a beautiful, organic monument. The park and museum intend to make humans aware of the erosion they are committing on the natural world and how nature tries to conquer that territory back.

The project site lies within Qianliangshan Park, a UNESCO world heritage site to protect the ancient wall. Lying outside the ancient walls, but well within the expanded city today, the park is intended to be an escape from the surrounding urban environment.

site section I The paving is separated by portions of natural ground cover. The left portion represents nature dominating, a moat interrupts the rectilinear paving pattern. The right portion represents human dominating, the pedestrian pathway interrupts nature.
The perimeter of the site that lines the street is elevated higher with more dense vegetation to draw visitor’s focuses inwards. Colorful vegetation contrasts the city’s harsh environment.

The University of the Arts commissioned that we develop proposals for their future student center. It is intended to host a variety of spaces utilized by university students, faculty, and citizens of Philadelphia who want to partake in the visual arts of the school. It accompanies both the busy, urban environment of the surrounding city while providing seclusion spaces to escape from the chaos.
The heavy seclusion spaces clad in concrete panels can be seen through the contrasting light, glass curtain wall. The boxes break up the open plan and hang within spaces other spaces. By visitors making a visual connection with the seclusion space, they become intrigued to navigate towards the box.

The project site lies along Broad Street, the main road of the theater district of Philadelphia. All of the University of the Arts buildings also sit on Broad Street. Directly across the street is the performance complex, the Kimmel Center. The student center is intended to host small performances and exhibitions that may accompany those within the Kimmel Center

The streets parallel to Broad street host affordable housing for those interested in living in close proximity to the theatre district. The student center is intended to host private events for the university and public events for the rest of the community.

Entering from Broad Street, the auditorium box lies directly ahead. A lounge/conference room hangs into the lobby space.

sections The private exhibition and auditorium are both double height to show their immense authority within the project. Reveals allow people to peek inside and see what events may be going on. It further intrigues them to work their way towards the seclusion boxes.

The store is designed to display geometric patterned jewelry. I wanted to replicate the transformative aspects of geometries. Seeing a single part of a geometric pattern on it’s own is different than seeing it collaborated into a pattern. The partitions and mullions of the exterior facade create a three dimensional storefront. The storefront lines up once directly in front. However, it has the possibility to morph as pedestrians of different speeds walk by.
The white marble and stucco keep a minimalist feel that draws attention to the geometries created and the jewelry on display. As my very first architectural design project, it was a great opportunity to experiment with brand identity and furniture design.

The project site lies on College Avenue, the busiest street running through downtown State College. Located in a college town for Penn State University, the jewelry store replaces an extremely small, college merchandise store. The storefront design utilizes datum lines along the street front, similar to the exploration of line continuation between color blocks and shapes created from the lines in the painting exploration activity.

The displaced partitions serve as program separators. When viewed straight on, a geometric pattern is created.

The spanning beams and placement of partitions separates the public displace in the from the semi-public seating and repair station in the back. A connecting pathway runs from the entry along the side of the store, with various hanging displays along the right wall.

The folding of materials was explored in both the wall and free standing displays. The folded components are white marble to keep with the simple color palate of the store and draw the attention to the simple geometric designs occurring.
