Pedder & Steadman F1 Sidecar Racing Team
Sidecar racing is one of the most
visually amazing and spectacular
motor racing sports to watch. The
Driver and Passenger are seen
working together to ride the ma-
chine to it’s highest potential
around the race track at
breath-taking speeds. It is the
only motor sport where team
work is essential for remaining
on the track. With speeds
reaching up to 180 mph and
the sidecar being just 2
inches from the floor, it is
hard to find a more exhila-
rating and exiting sport.

F r o n t E n d The modern racing sidecar chassis is very different from the sidecars of
the past. The sidecar is an integral part of the machine, the wheels are
wide with a flat profile and the whole machine is very low, just 2 inches
from the ground.
The front end design and steering on a sidecar is
very similar to a Formula 1 chassis. The front
wheel is connected to the chassis with steel
wishbones.
The front wheel is moved using a link system
connecting the handlebar to the steering
upright (hub). This form of steering is called
centre-hub-steering, meaning that the steering is done by turning
the wheel upright (hub) directly without any type of gearing, and
thereby actually turning the whole front wheel by holding it by
the centre shaft.
Adjustments made via the wish bones allow different settings to
be applied to the front wheel to maximise grip from the tyre to
the tarmac. Using this design the front wheel travels
35 mm.
R e a r E n d The Rear end wheel is attached to the chassis with
steel link rods / wishbones. This system is called
multi-link-suspension.
Every angle in this construction is adjustable, al-
lowing total flexibility where adhesion between
the tyre and the track is concerned. The suspension used is
very similar to that used in the front wheel.
The rear wheel is the only driven wheel and it’s is done so
by chain directly from the engine as on a Superbike.
Gearing is altered by changing the rear sprocket size.
S i d e W h e e l The side wheel does not use any suspension, it is solid
mounted to the chassis. Adjustment can be made via
three points and for obtaining the best adhesion and
best grip, also you can angle the wheel slightly so
