LEARNING OBJECTIVES Objective #1: By August 13, 2010, I would like to I fully understand what exactly I want to do within the financial industry. I already know I want to work within the financial industry and this internship is helping me narrow down a specific area of expertise. Learning Activities: In order to accomplish this goal, I need pay attention and absorb all of the information I am present in the shadowing opportunities. By shadowing different areas of the company I am able to see what my skill set and my personality are able to mesh with the best. I have already seen how this objective is starting to take place and it is exciting. Evaluation: Whether I accomplish this goal or not will be determined by my willingness to pay attention to detail and ask questions of my superiors. I need to pay attention to what each department takes to succeed and see if my skill set or personality would blossom in that department. I will succeed in this objective in having a specific department within the financial industry narrowed down by asking as many questions as possible.

Objective #2: By August 13, 2010, I would like to network and create contacts for the future. By creating these contacts, I will be able to keep many avenues open for my post-graduate search for a job. Another result from creating contacts is not just job oriented, but creating friendships as well. Learning Activities: In order to accomplish this goal, I must be open to all encounters with co-workers and clients. By being friendly and open to all people, I will be able to communicate and for friendships with all different kinds of people. Interaction with people is one of my favorite parts of this job and hopefully it will benefit me in this way in the future. Evaluation: If I accomplished this goal I will have created many friendships and will stay in contact with my co-workers. I would like to keep e-mail addresses and phone numbers not only to create the possibility of gaining a potential job offer, but to keep in touch with how everyday life is going.

Objective #3: Although I have a year of school left, I would like to earn a job offer through this internship. I want to get my name out there as a positive asset to the company and by the end of the internship (August 13th) I want them to tell me they would like to have me in for an interview about a position they think I would succeed in. Learning Activities: In order to accomplish this goal, I will have to have a positive reputation for myself. This will be done through working hard, showing up on time (being the first to arrive and last to leave), getting along with co-workers, always being positive, getting along with clients and helping the clients in the most thorough way possible. I will have to go above and beyond the criteria the company has set for the internship program so I turn heads within the management. Evaluation: If I accomplish this goal, I will have a job when I get out of college in a very stable and successful company.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES REFLECTION

•I have definitely accomplished my first objective and have realized what I want to do when I graduate from college. Through shadowing different departments, I have realized what areas within the financial industry interest me the most and which ones don’t interest me at all. I have decided that I would like to work either within a corporation’s finance department or be a financial planner/analyst where I would interact with my clients on a daily basis. • Achieving my second objective was one of the highlights of the internship experience. I have developed many contacts throughout the internship that will benefit me greatly in the future. I got all the other interns’ phone numbers so we can keep in touch and I also got the business cards of all the associates I shadowed. If I apply for a job down the road at TD Ameritrade, knowing these associates will help me get my foot in the door. •Although I did not fully accomplish my third and final objective, I have opened the door to gaining an interview and potentially getting hired when I get out of college. The associates at TD Ameritrade made it very clear that they treat the internship program as a recruiting tool to gain quality employees. In fact Bill Gerber, the CFO, told me they ended up hiring 8 of the 10 interns from last summer’s internship class! Even though I walked out without a job offer in hand, I learned a lot about both the company and the industry. I loved everyone I worked with and it would be a great company to work for down the road.

QUOTE/AUTHORIZATION WORK

Page 7: Portfolio 2

Quote/Authorization Work

Throughout the internship there were days where we would get on the phones and take calls from clients. The que we were in was known as the “Quote/Auth” que. In this phone que, clients would call in if they had trouble accessing their account or simply needed a stock quote. If the client had trouble accessing their account, I would ask them pieces of information that was sensitive to their account (social security numbers, birthdays, employers, etc.) to verify them and would then proceed to reset their PIN numbers, passwords, or security questions.

Quote/Auth work helped me refine and develop many skills. Some skills that benefited from this work were my communication and computer skills and I developed more patience. Interacting with clients of all personalities could be a whirlwind sometimes so patience and positive communication skills were a must.

DEPARTMENT SHADOWING

Page 9: Portfolio 2

Department Shadowing

Every week we would shadow a different department to see what they do on a daily basis. Some departments that we shadowed were: New Client Development, PCS Elite, Premier, Fixed Income, Mutual Funds, National Branch, the Resource Desk, Think-or-Swim, and many more. These shadowing sessions were designed to give us both a grasp of how the individual groups of the company make the company tick and what department interests us the most. My favorite three departments were the National Branch, Fixed Income, and Compliance departments.

From shadowing different departments I have developed a clearer picture of what I would like to do after college. I have realized what departments/career paths would not interest me and which ones would interest me. I would like to be a more hands-on financial planner and interact with my clients instead of being in the phone que and talking to random people all day. Observing the associates at their work also gave me a glimpse of what it takes to be a successful salesman and financial planner.

Special Olympics

TD Ameritrade was the sponsor of the National Special Olympic Games in Lincoln, NE the week of July18-23. Throughout the week, various TD Ameritrade associates would go down to Lincoln to support the Special Olympians and help run the events. I helped run both the Tennis and Basketball events. I would referee the basketball games and help track down tennis balls.

This was a great event for me to be a part of because it was important for me to see how huge corporations still value giving back to the community. TD Ameritrade strongly encourages their employees to participate in community service and nothing echoes this point more than sponsoring and helping out with the National Special Olympics. I had a great time interacting with the athletes and nothing was better than seeing the radiant smiles on their faces!

AIM PROJECT

Page 12: Portfolio 2

AIM Project

During the internship all of the interns were assigned an individual project. Each of us were given between 1,000-1,200 computer files to search through for information that is sensitive to clients and associates. Sensitive information consisted of social security numbers, personal e-mail addresses, TD Ameritrade account numbers, log in IDs, and bank routing numbers. The purpose of this project was to make sure client and associate information does not get out of the company’s database for security.

This project helped me learn how to identify information that is sensitive to clients and associates in company documents. It gave me a glimpse as to the great lengths TD Ameritrade goes to to help preserve the security of it’s clients and employees.

PRESENTATION TRAINING

Page 14: Portfolio 2

Presentation Training

On Friday, July 23rd, Alex from the HR Department instructed a presentation training seminar for all of the interns. In this seminar we watched speeches and went over various techniques and skills that great public speakers possess. After having this discussion, we were each given a topic and then had construct and deliver a speech using the topic and the qualities we learned earlier in the day. Each speech was taped and we all gave feedback to each other on our speeches. It was a very positive experience for all of us.

This seminar increased my public speaking skills dramatically. I became more comfortable speaking in front of people and learned some valuable skills that will make my speeches more impactful. Little things such as voice volume, eye contact, and hand gestures keep the audience engaged in your speech and that was very informative for me. Getting positive and negative feedback from my peers and supervisors was also helpful and I feel as though I definitely became a better public speaker because of this seminar.
