CONGRATULATIONS to the
Portage County Horse Bowl
Participants!
Our Junior division came in 5th out of 20 counties. Ayla Powers came in 5th out of 56 contest-
ants for the most questions answered in the Junior Division and Scarlett Fitzpatrick came in
8th. Senior Team came in 3rd out of 20 with Jessica Booher coming in 3rd for individual.
The primary objective of Horse Bowl Competition is to provide an opportunity for 4H mem-
bers enrolled in horse projects, to demonstrate their knowledge of equine-related matters in
a competitive setting, where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. We hope that this
competition will provide an educational experience for both participants and the spectators.
The Portage County study group starts every year the first Thursday in January and continues
until the competition in April. Study group is open to all 4-H clubs.

Ohio State Fair Skillathon Excellence Awards
This year will be the debut of the first ever Skillathon Excellence awards. Youth must compete in ALL 9 SKIL-
LATHONS and receive a MINIMUM score of 65% in order to be eligible for this award. The top 10 highest scor-
ing individuals regardless of age division will receive belt buckles. Top 3 individuals will be recognized at the
sale of champions and will divide $1000 from the Youth Reserve Program. We recognize this is quite an under-
taking for youth and can be very expensive and time consuming. Youth who feel cost may be prohibited can
contact me and arrange for passes to get into the fair. To be eligible for a pass youth must have competed in
all Skillathons up to that point and have achieved the minimum score. Passes will be left at the gate for partici-
pation on each Skillathon date. It is our hope that these awards will encourage youth to learn more about ani-
mal science and branch out from their particular species. Official rules will be located in the Skillathon rules
posted on the Ohio State Fair website (http://ohiostatefair.com/livestock/).
