OverviewThe Portable Canine Container was developed to provide a portable shelter unit for the working military dog and equipment. The container is designed for shipping on a 463L pallet, and is C130 compatible. The sys-tem will accommodate one dog. The Portable Canine Container is easy to clean and sanitize, and well venti-lated to ensure the health of the animal. The unit is also equipped with an 110VAC 60 Hz Air Cooling Unit to provide cooling and heating. The purpose of this manual is to provide general operational and maintenance procedures for proper func-tion of the Portable Canine Container. This manual is divided into three sections: Operation of the PCC, Maintenance of the PCC and the setup of the Kennel Run. The Portable Canine Container is made of alumi-num extrusions and is structurally welded by certified welders at Garrett Container Systems, Inc.

Due to the structural design of the container, it is recommended that the PCC unit be returned to Garrett Container Systems, Inc. for any structural repair or modifications.

The cooling system/ heating unit is a warranted item and servicing should be completed by an autho-rized technician to maintain the warranty.

This manual contains also information related to the basic setup of the Garrett Container Systems, Inc “Kennel Run”, part number: CON271170. The SOF Kennel Enclosure CON271170 consists of the single Canine Kennel and 5’ X 12’ Kennel Run. The Kennel run facility is an exercise area for the military working dog that has polypropylene pet decks and a roof system with a weather tarp. The kennel run disassembles and can be stored and transported within the single kennel (Figure 1). The single kennel has a 40” x 72” air conditioned and heated area for the MWD. The area has a continuous liner with floor drain for cleaning and sanitizing. Plastic pet decks ship with the unit to be placed in the kennel. The kennel unit also has a lockable storage area in the rear and a large storage rack on the unit roof. The temperature controls are external with an internal air tempera-ture indicator.

Use only a 12 gauge wire cord, max. 25 foot length, to power the unit. The power cord will easily connect to the external

inlet plug.

Safety Summary

The following signs throughout this manual alert the user to important safety information.*

DANGER: Indicates an immediately hazardous situation that if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which if not avoided could result in death or injury.

CAUTION: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which if not avoided, may result in a minor or moderate injury. Also used to indicate against unsafe practices.

* Reference: ANSI Z535.1-1991

The following is a summary of safety information for the PCC / Canine Container.

CAUTION: Do not forklift PCC with MWD working dog inside the kennel.

DANGER: DO NOT COVER AIR COOLING UNIT. Covering air cooling unit can lead to fire or damage to unit.

WARNING: The Cooling System Maintenance instructions are for the use of qualified individuals specifically trained and experienced in servicing of this type of equipment and related systems. Improper servicing may damage equipment, create hazards, violate state code, or create a hazard that could ruin the equipment. CAUTION: Proper grounding of power source is required for safe operation.

The unit displays the average interior kennel temperature. The digital control thermostat controls the heat-ing and cooling cycles for the unit. The cooling is preset to have the air conditioning and fan turn on at 100°F and off at 90°F. Adjusting this preset temperature is described below. The heat cycle is preset to turn on at 45°F and off at 55°F. The zone between the cooling and heating will have no fan cycling. The unit can be left with the power on and will cycle within the set parameters.

GFI reset is used to reset power to the cooling unit.

Factory settings are preset with the intent of acclimating your working dog. •While operating the unit at the factory setting the unit will not “cycle” when •the inside kennel temperature is between 55 degrees and 90 degrees.

Caution: Changing the factory settings of the heating and cooling unit too close will result in simultaneous cycling of the cooling unit and the heating unit. KEEP AT LEAST A 20 DEGREE VARIANCE OF TEMPERATURE BETWEEN THE HEATING UNIT AND COOLING UNIT

Note: You must go through all the steps below to complete setup

To change to a new temperature setting: Turn on power to unit. If an error occurs, press the set button to return to normal display

Note: When the A/C or the Heat is cycled on there is an indica-tor in the upper or lower corner of the display. The toggle switch powers the unit on or off only. The Electronic Temperature Con-trol (ETC) will automatically end programming if no keys are depressed for a period of thirty seconds. Reprogramming is not necessary when the power is interrupted.

Maximizing Heating/Cooling Potential

In order to maximize the heating and cooling potential of the air conditioning unit, it is best to minimize the space or area being heated/cooled. This can be accomplished by using the supplied slide-in lexan covers to cover the grilled openings. See Figure 5. Covers are provided for the right and left side of the container. The panels confine the cooling and heating to the interior of the kennel. When the unit is used without the panels, efficiency is decreased greatly, therefore for maximum cooling and heating use the panels.

If the unit is placed within a tent, heating efficiency will be improved. If the unit is placed in a closed tent, cooling efficiency will not be improved as the air conditioner will re-circulate the same air for the system. This unit should not be used as a tent heater or to cool a tent.

To optimize the heating and cooling efficiency of the unit DO NOT place in direct sun or cold and windy areas. Provide shade or shelter where possible. Without shade or shelter HVAC will not function properly as designed.

DANGER: DO NOT COVER AIR COOLING UNIT. Covering air cooling unit can lead to fire or damage to unit.

Dog Door Hinges

The swinging dog door is hinged by four spring loaded hinges. With use and wear the spring tension rate may require adjustment. The cap of the hinge can be removed and adjusted by turning the dial to increase tension. Note: do not over tension the spring. Adjustments should be made one notch at a time.

Remove the spring cap.

Turn to adjust tension in spring.

Troubleshooting

Mechanical Integrity

The cooling system unit should be periodically inspected to be sure that the bolts securing the cooling unit to the container are tight and in good working condition. Inspection of the plastic shroud covering the air conditioner should also be made to ensure that the four mounting screws and washer are snug and hold the shroud to the air conditioning unit. Inspect for cracks or pos-sible damage suffered from impact.

Electrical Maintenance

All electrical work and/or inspection on the PCC Cooling System should be performed ONLY by qualified service personnel.

Heating Malfunction

If electrical power to the PCC is normal and the fan runs, but there is no heated air, the heating unit may not be receiving power. Check the electrical plug at the heating unit to make sure it is secure. If this does not correct the problem, the heating thermostat or limit switch may be faulty.

Filter Replacement

Remove interior grill. Remove filter element and blow clean with compressed air or replace with new element. See Figure 27 and 28. Note filter is in the supply side only.

Heater Replacement

WARNING: The following instructions are for the use of qualified individuals specifically trained and experienced in installation of this type of equipment and related systems. Installation and service personnel are required by some states to be licensed. Improper installation may damage equipment, create hazards, violate state code, or create a hazard that could ruin the equipment.
