In The Garden 6

Springtime is showing how wonderful nature is and setting fruit for the summer crops.…Use your favourite fertilizer now to give the plants help to produce their fruit or seeds. Everything needs a boost! Look out for the pesky bugs, Aphids on the Roses, Snails, Slugs and others that want to make a meal of your garden…To rid aphids, spraying water on the plant or mixing dishwashing liquid 30 ml per 1 Litre of water, as often as needed, is an inexpensive way…. Snails, Slugs and other pests need a different treatment… Collect them by hand early morning then dispose of them…. You can also place fire ashes or saw-dust around the plant which they won’t cross…. Cheers and enjoy, Wendy Garvie

PORT WAKEFIELD UNITING CHURCH GREAT OUTBACK BYO PICNIC

For the past 2 years, Port Wakefield Uniting Church has held a Great Outback BBQ to raise awareness of and funds for Frontier Services. This year, due to COVID restrictions, it was decided to change it to a BYO picnic on Sunday, 4th October. Janet Woodward, Fellowships Secretary of the Uniting Church in South Australia was a brilliant guest speaker at the morning Church Service. She spoke about the invaluable work of the Bush Chaplains and work parties who travel to remote areas to make a positive difference in the lives of others. She included a Powerpoint presentation of Frontier Services personnel at work, including Bush Chaplain Sunny and a working party he took to Mt. Searle Station near Leigh Creek. They stayed there for a week doing much needed repairs, returning back to Adelaide at the end of September. After the service the congregation adjourned to the Port Wakefield Sports complex to meet up with others who had attended their own services before coming to Port Wakefield for lunch. The result was a wonderful day of learning about the work of Frontier Services and fellowship with others over lunch and into the afternoon. Approximately $2,500 was raised from donations, a COVID safe trading table and the sale of Christmas cards and other Frontier Services goods.

Port Wakefield Primary School News Book Week Due to Covid-19, Book Week was postponed last term and is now this week. At school we are going to have an activity afternoon with the students on Friday 23rd October. The social distancing requirements unfortunately mean we are unable to have parents join us for the afternoon. Due to the short notice, we are having a casual clothes day rather than dress ups. However; if your child desperately wants to dress up and you have enough time to arrange a costume, the theme is ‘Curious Creatures and Wild Minds’ Sports Day We are planning on having our annual Sports Day on Friday 13th November. Due to the likelihood of it being hot, we are planning for the sprints, long run, relays and team games to occur in the morning. We will have some outdoor tabloid events, as well as some indoor games. Once we have a program organised, we will send it home. We want families to join us on the day, please remember to follow the Covid-19 rules; which we will share with you closer to the day.

Great Moments in Australian History In the lead up to the 1956 Games, crowds lined the streets to cheer the Olympic torch relay as it made its way from Cairns to Melbourne. However, a uni

student named Barry Larkin and his mates thought Australians were taking the festivities a bit too seriously. The torch relay wasn’t some sacred tradition, after all; it had actually been invented by Nazi Germany in 1936. What the event needed, they decided, was a quality student prank. As the relay approached Sydney, Larkin and his friends painted a chair leg silver, attached a pudding tin to the top, and lit up a pair of kerosene-soaked undies. Somehow, this was enough to convince a police escort that he was the official bearer of the Olympic flame. After jogging through a crowd of 30,000 cheering people, Larkin presented his "torch" to Mayor Pat Hills in a ceremony at Sydney Town Hall. The mayor was just beginning his speech when an aide whispered that maybe something wasn't quite right about the pudding tin filled with flaming jocks. Ten minutes later, the real torch bearer finally arrived. Larkin had already disappeared into the crowd by then, extremely pleased with himself.
