Introduction

Portumna

Portumna (in Irish ‘Port Omna’ means the landing place of the oak) is an attractive market town in south-

east Galway. The town is situated just west of the point where the mighty River Shannon enters Lough

Derg (the third largest lake on the island of Ireland). The town has a rich built heritage with Portumna

Castle and Gardens, the Dominican Abbey, the Workhouse and other fine old buildings in and around the

town. It also has a particularly rich natural heritage situated on the shore of a large lake with river, callow,

wetland and woodland habitats as well as farmland in the hinterland.

The Port Omna Beo: Nature and Wildlife Plan sets out a list of projects, events and activities that will run

over the next three years in the Portumna area for the benefit of nature and wildlife, the environment, and

the local community. This document is a ‘Biodiversity Action Plan’ for the Portumna area.

Biodiversity Action Plans

Biodiversity Action Plans provide a framework for protecting, managing and/or enhancing natural

heritage in the area through action led by the local community. The process of producing such a plan

creates an opportunity to co-ordinate action among local groups, individuals, statutory bodies, and other

organisations.

Many towns and villages, like Portumna, have active community-based groups such as Tidy Towns,

schools, farming organisations, heritage groups etc. that work tirelessly for the benefit of their members

and the community. The production of a local biodiversity action plan can help ensure that community-

based projects will not have a negative impact on biodiversity, and may have positive impacts on nature,

the natural environment and amenities in the area e.g. through raising awareness, habitat creation and/or

appropriate habitat management.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of all living things- plants, animals, microbes and fungi. Biodiversity also

refers to the places where plants and animals live (habitats), and the complex interactions among living

things (the web of life), and their relationship with the environment (ecology).

The natural world (i.e. biodiversity) provides us with many essential ‘goods and services’ – clean air and

water, food, fuel, building materials, fertile soils, nutrient recycling, pollination, pest and disease control,

medicines etc.

Biodiversity has many benefits for local communities by providing natural recreational amenities (e.g.

parks and green spaces, walking and biking routes, picnic spots, places for fishing and angling), local

educational resources and environmental protection. Allowing room for nature and wildlife in our towns

and villages makes them more attractive and interesting, protects our environment, and improves our

quality of life.

Process to produce the plan

Portumna was selected as one of nine towns and villages in east Galway to produce a community

biodiversity plan in 2013. The project was funded by the Leader Company, Galway Rural Development.

Page 6: Port Omna Beo: Nature & Wildlife Plan · 2014 9 Promote wildlife tours of the Shannon Joe O’Keeffe, Diarmuid Lally Inland Fisheries Ireland, GCC 2014-2016 10 Develop a biodiversity

6

Dr. Janice Fuller, Consultant Ecologist, facilitated the production of the plan. Four public meetings were

held in early 2013 to identify potential projects, events and/or activities that would have some nature and

wildlife component and that might be included in the plan. The final plan produced builds on existing

projects and initiatives that aim to protect and enhance nature, the environment and natural amenities in

the town, and includes some new projects.

Biodiversity Training was provided for interested individuals and groups in Portumna in order to raise

awareness of what biodiversity is, why it is important, where it is, and the many benefits of biodiversity

for people, communities and the environment. The focus of the training was to produce a Biodiversity

Plan for the town.

Residents from Portumna and the surrounding area met on four occasions with ecologist, Dr Janice Fuller

(Appendix 1). Dr Fuller provided the training and facilitated the production of the Biodiversity Plan. The

objectives and actions of the plan were decided by the local community.

Various agencies and environmental organisations were consulted as the plan was developed in order to

learn more about biodiversity in the Portumna area.

The project to produce a local Biodiversity Action Plan for Portumna was a collaborative effort between

Galway County Council, Galway Rural Development, People and Nature Project, Galway County

Heritage Forum, Galway County Biodiversity Steering Group and the local community. The project to

produce local Biodiversity Action Plans is an action in the County Galway Biodiversity Action Plan

2008- 2013, which is part of the Galway County Heritage Plan 2009- 2014. It was initiated by the Galway

County Heritage Forum and the Galway County Biodiversity Steering Group, in partnership with Galway

Rural Development.

Nature and Wildlife in Portumna

Portumna is situated just west of the point where the River Shannon flows into Lough Derg. The town has

an unrivalled natural heritage on its doorstep with the Shannon, Lough Derg, and Portumna Forest Park,

as well as the hinterland of farmland and hills. The river, lake and forest provide excellent natural

amenities that are enjoyed by the people of the town and visitors alike. This rich natural heritage is one of

the town’s greatest assets and one to be treasured.

There are extensive callows along the River Shannon and the edge of Lough Derg near Portumna.

Callows are a very special type of wet grassland or meadow that occur in floodplains of rivers and lakes,

and are seasonally flooded. They are composed of tall grasses and herbs such as reed canary grass,

meadowsweet, ragged robin, and various sedges and rushes. These wet grassy places provide wonderful

nesting and foraging habitats for many birds, and are often teeming with insects and snails in summer.

Much of the Shannon callows are protected as a Special Protection Area (SPA) due to the important bird

populations that use the callows for nesting and foraging including Whooper Swan, Wigeon and Golden

Plover. Lough Derg is also designated as an SPA because it provides a range of wetland habitats for

waterbirds such as Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Cormorant and Common Tern.

Marsh pea: a scarce plant that grows in the callows at Portumna

The north-eastern shore of Lough Derg is also designated for nature conservation as a Special Area of

Conservation (SAC) because of the range of habitats and species that occur along the lake shore. Unusual

stands of Juniper can be seen in Portumna Forest Park close to lake shore. Wet woodland, limestone

pavement and fen habitats can also be found near the lake. All these habitats support a diverse flora and

fauna. The lake is a popular natural amenity for boating, angling and swimming. People travel from far

and wide to enjoy this beautiful lake and all it has to offer.

The harbour

Portumna Town is also fortunate to have another wonderful natural recreation amenity close to the town

centre: Portumna Forest Park. Owned by Coillte, this Forest Park is very popular with walkers. It contains

a range of woodland habitats including conifer stands, native woodland and wet woodland. Red squirrel

are regularly spotted in the park and pine marten have also been recorded.

Dominican Abbey: old stone buildings often have small flowers and ferns in the nooks and crannies

Portumna Forest Castle is located on the edge of the Forest Park and is set in extensive parkland. The

Castle Gardens are a delight in summer with a rich variety of flowers, climbers, shrubs, vegetables and

fruit. In the Town, there are many other small spaces for nature, the Yew Walk, private gardens, public

green spaces, roadside planting etc.

10

Community Action

Portumna is a vibrant town with many community groups and activities. Portumna Tidy Towns have been

active for many years and have worked on numerous projects that aim to protect and enhance natural

amenities in the town including the swimming area, playground and marina.

Picnic facilities near the swimming area

An Gáirdín is a beautiful organic garden and educational centre in Portumna. Many courses and events

are run in the garden or the meeting room such as organic gardening and craft classes. An Gáirdín is an

accredited centre for the Discover Primary Science and Maths programme for schools. This programme

aims to develop creativity in children in Primary schools, show them how important science is to our

everyday lives and more importantly how much fun it can be.
