A pioneering comprehensive implementation

First questions raised:

Is it just an atractive slogan?

Is it a good idea?

Is it applicable?

And … if so … How can it be carried out?

A pioneering comprehensive implementation

In order to try to address those issues let us have anoverview of the concept: Blue Growth

Page 4: Port of Vigo Authority’s Blue Growth Interpretation and ... › archivos › ficheros_e... · Port of Vigo Authority’sopinion on how Blue Growth’s initiative should be applied

The second issue is that not all those sectors exist in everyplace nor have the possibility of being developed

Page 5: Port of Vigo Authority’s Blue Growth Interpretation and ... › archivos › ficheros_e... · Port of Vigo Authority’sopinion on how Blue Growth’s initiative should be applied

The existing sectors, … are they interrelated, are theresinergies among them?

At the Port of Vigo, we have concluded that wehave to respond with a categorical and robustYES to all those questions and, in order toillustrate this, we will show what happens inone of the more important sectors of Vigo’seconomy, which is also closely related toDGMARE: Fisheries, understanding this activityin its widest sense

Port of Vigo Authority’s opinion on how Blue Growth’sinitiative should be applied

• It should be addressed with a holistic approach: it should be seen as a whole and not as

a sum of interdependently analyzed parts.

• It should be differently implemented depending on the area: a bottom-up approach is

needed.

• It is an incremental methodology.

• It can be exported to other areas.

• It seeks to attract private investors and funds.

• Its main goal is to achive technological and managerial innovation, as well as to

preserve and develop maritime and port culture.

• It should be planned according to a reasonable time framework.

• The resulting projects shoud be well defined and work as spin-offs of the parent initiative.

• A sufficiently comprehensive institution shoud lead the initiative in each location: in

this case the Port of Vigo Authority

Why the Port of Vigo?

• It is the node where the most important economic activities

meet: Lo-Lo terminal, Ro-Ro terminal, fresh fish, frozen fish,

shipbuilding, cruises, and marina.

• It is an export/import port: goods are exported as finished

products or are used as raw materials by local industries.

• It is a nodal point in the Motorway of the Sea between Vigo and

Saint Nazaire (France): it has a Lo-Lo container terminal and a Ro-

Ro unloading terminal.

• The Port of Vigo cooperates actively with Campus do Mar and

enjoys the campus’ high-degree specialisation and skills.

• It is the most important port of the world in terms of

commercialisation of fish for human consumption.

• It is the leading port of Galicia in general cargo.

• It is the leading port of Spain in traffic of granite.
