Feasibility Studies

Based on the construction ofconsistent development scenarios,Ramboll prepares feasibility studiesand provides expert consultancy inport master planning.

Feasibility studies typically includetechnical investigations, trafficanalyses, financial analyses andenvironmental impact analyses.Further, Ramboll assists with con-ceptual and preliminary designs, authority management anddevelopment policy. Financial andeconomic evaluations are typicallybased on the set up of solid trafficforecasts.

Ramboll is uniquely qualified toidentify and analyse port cargo-potentials and to subsequentlyprepare the reliable viabilityanalysis. In-depth technical, environmental and economic issuesmust be evaluated when greenfieldseaport projects are considered.

Ramboll can assist port authorities, municipalities, and other decision-makers with preparing a basis fordecision-making. We have vastexperience within project manage-ment of large projects through allphases from preinvestigations andplanning to design and projectimplementation in the field.

Feasibility studies typically form thebasis for investor decisionmaking.Ramboll is well qualified to preparefeasibility studies that fulfil thespecific requirements ofdevelopment banks. Based on ourfeasibility studies, we have helpedclients get financing for theirprojects from financial institutes.

Port Master Planning

When port authorities considerexpanding and upgrading portfacilities to accommodate new orlarger vessels, a number of facilitiesmay need to be reconfigured  suchas, for example, berths, land storageareas, mooring systems, and scourprotection. The first step, however,is evaluating and analysing thefacilities. Ramboll will assist portauthorities with all necessaryevaluations and analyses.

The need to keep up operationsduring expansion and upgrades areduly considered in all our studies.

In our evaluation of themanoeuvring conditions at projectsites, we include real-time shipsimulations—preferably carried outby local captains. In the design ofmooring arrangements and quays, the dynamics of moored ships, which are influenced by wind, waves, currents and passing ships, are analysed using numericalmooring models.

The crucial analysis of wave climatein coastal regions, wave agitationand sediment processes in ports, coastal development and particledispersion in oceans, rivers andestuaries, are carried out using thestate-of-the-art and internationallyrecognized MIKE 21/3 and LITPACKnumerical models developed byDHI. The models are used by ourhighly qualified staff, who areexperts in  ports, hydrodynamicsand coastal morphology.
