PORT OF ROTTERDAM - JONGKIND JOHAN BERTHOLD (1857)

Economical evolution drives the development of the Port of Rotterdam. What can a more public program like a parking for 400 trucks with facilities evoke in this inhuman environment? An excursion into the contours of a pioneer city on the Maasvlakte.

The layered landscape of the port is shaped by the opposing forces of economy, ecology technology and society. The landscape, though artificial, is nonetheless landscape and has value and identity. The alien scale of this globalised piece of Dutch terraforming is unparalleled in Holland and makes the port area into a place where everything is possible.

The gradual development of the Maasvlakte 2 over the course of the next twenty years brings in a large number of construction workers, civil engineers, businessmen and truckers.

To accomodate these temporary communities we propose to create a temporary city on the Maasvlakte.

THE -NOT SO SUCCESFULL- DISTRIPARK FUNCTIONS AS A CORE FOR THE MAASVLAKTE COMMUNITIES

MAIN STREET

To strengthen the identity of Distripark and add to the collection of artificial landcapes we propose a green dike around Temporary City which can host public program and present itself along the A15. This dike is made with waste stacked asphalt overgrown with annual plants and flowers. All office programs are concentrated on a ‘business strip’ on Main Street. Programs linked to infrastucture are located under and along the outer ring dike.

The proposed location for Truckplaza is situated on the crossroads of the first and second Maasvlakte and amidst huge bundles of all kinds of imaginable infrastructure. Truckplaza will be positioned close to the A15 highway and in the vicinity of hotel@work to optimize traffic and profit from shared services.

A15

The programs of Truckplaza, Hotel@work, train- and container repair and harbour-related services offer a much needed chance for diversification of Distripark. By increasing the service level and facilities and clustering companies renting a plot in Distripark will be more attractive to companies.

RECREATION AREA

More critical mass for the temporary communities of the Maasvlakte. By combining the temporary housing of 2.500 construction workers and 1.000 truckers we create a home away from home for the migrating workers of Europe.

TRAFFIC SCHEME PLAN

The stacked hotelcontainers use the same infrastructure as the truckpark. This creates a flexible facility for sleeping people, either in truck, container or tent; Maasvlakte Motel.

The programs are concentrated round a central court where a more intimate and public space exists in the barren conditions in the Port of Rotterdam. The buildings, clad in asphalt, adress both the court and the Distripark and Truckpark.

The collection of distinct black buildings towering the green dike around the Distripark communicates a smaller scale and habitable environment to the passers by on the A15. The buildings are monolithic and have deep window bays.

SECTION OVER CENTRAL COURT

SHOPS HOTEL

The landscape flows into the central court where the truckservice garage is clearly visible as a celebration of truckersculture. The dedicated program for truckers -showers, lounge, fitness, services- is combined in a compact volume with the restaurant on top. From here all of the Port City Pioneers van enjoy the view over the harbour, the beach and the ongoing evolution of the Port of Rotterdam.
