Pore Water Investigation Methods For Groundwater Discharges to Surface Water
byJoseph Walczak
Michigan DEQ, Superfund Section
Prepared byMark HenryMichigan DEQ
What is pore water?
• Pore water is the water that takes up the space between particles in sediments
• Groundwater in an aquifer flows through sediments to the surface water and is “pore water” while migrating through the sediments
Why look at pore water ?
• Identify where, and at what strength contaminant plumes discharge to surface water bodies
• Quick and easy plume identification• Non-disruptive method using mini-piezometer
pore water samplers (PushPoint samplers)• Provide information for placement of permanent
(on land) monitoring wells• Provide valuable contaminant and geochemical
information about the plume discharge
Classic theory

Zones of contaminant discharge at creek floodplain
Plume discharge seems to be following classical theory
Cr+6PCE
Underwater pore water collectionin the name of science….and fun
Conclusions• 70-90% savings over drilling or Geoprobe
investigation – 2 people PW sampling can define plume discharge in a couple of days
• PW sampling can collect a vast amount of geochemical data in a short time
• PW can determine if location is discharging or recharging
• PW sampling is fun – you really get to know your site
