What are the pros and cons?

§  Every dental procedure comes with a list of pros and cons. Here are my thoughts on porcelain veneers:

§  Pros: Porcelain veneers are very natural looking. They are permanently glued to your teeth so you don’t have to take them in and out of your mouth under any circumstances. Porcelain veneers are also naturally stain-resistant, so unlike with your tooth’s own enamel you won’t have to worry about coffee, nicotine or tea stains. If properly cared for, veneers can last over a dozen years without complications, making them extremely durable and a good investment. Finally, veneers are one of the quickest options for transforming your smile.

§  Cons: Because veneers oftentimes require removing the tooth’s enamel, this procedure is irreversible. Once the enamel is removed, the tooth has been forever altered. Veneers are a costly investment compared to other smile makeover procedures. If you have a restricted budget, this may not be the option for you. If your veneers are not properly cared for, decay can form underneath them, they can chip, or even pop off of your teeth and then need them to be replaced at an additional fee.

How long does the procedure take?

§  Your porcelain veneers will require two visits after your initial consultation. Depending on the dental lab that your dentist uses, your veneers can be made in 5-14 business days. If you really need an instant smile makeover for a special occasion, some labs can even make them

§  in just 2 business days for an additional fee!

How much will it cost?

§  Porcelain veneers will typically cost between $1,000 and $2,000 per tooth. The fees will vary depending on what region of the country you live as well as how skilled your cosmetic dentist is. Cheaper veneers are usually provided by dentists that are not using top notch dental labs/ceramists to make the veneers or dentists who are not as skilled.

Will insurance cover this procedure?

§  Porcelain veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure that is generally not covered by dental insurance. However, if your teeth have been affected by a medical circumstance such as taking certain antibiotics like tetracycline that stain your teeth or if you’ve suffered a severe accident, your dentist may be able to submit a letter with the history of your medical circumstance along with photos to attempt to get partial coverage.

How long will it last?

§  With normal wear and tear, your porcelain veneers can last between 15 to 20 years. Certain dental labs and cosmetic dentists stand behind their work and will offer a lifetime warranty. Ask your dentist if they offer a warranty to make sure that you get more bang for your buck.

§  Unsure if veneers are right for you? Ask your doctor for before and after pictures of their work. Make sure that you like the “veneer effect” before agreeing to the procedure.
