Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere. The seasons

are opposite of those in Europe: when it is winter in Europe it is

summer in Australia and vice versa. When it is daytime in Europe

it is night-time in Australia.

Australia is surrounded by the sea: in the east there is the Pacific

Ocean and in the west there is the Indian Ocean. In the south

there is an island state called Tasmania.

Australia is divided into 6 federal states: South Australia, Western

Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and Victoria.

There are also two important areas: Northern Territory and a

federal district (Australian Capital Territory) where Canberra, the

capital city, is situated.

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, Brisbane is the

capital of Queensland, Sydney is the capital of New South Wales,

Perth is the capital of Western Australia, Adelaide is the capital of

Southern Australia, Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and Hobart

is the capital of Tasmania.

Australia e viceversa. Quando è giorno in Europa è notte in Australia.

L'Australia è circondata dal mare: a est c'è l'Oceano Pacifico e a ovest c'è l'Oceano Indiano. Al sud si trova un isola chiamata

Tasmania.

L'Australia è divisa in 6 stati federali: South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania e Victoria.

James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef

during his first voyage to Australia (1768-71).

Today, we know that Australia's Great Barrier Reef

is the largest living structure in the world. It is 1,250

miles long and covers an area of 8,000 square

miles along the Pacific coast of Queensland. The

Great Barrier Reef needs protection from tourism,

pollution and growing industrial development. That

is why the Australian authorities have created the

largest marine park in the world. This system of

reefs, islets, pools, grottoes was created by tiny

flowerlike animals called coral polyps over a million

of years. Millions of polyps together can make

immense constructions like the Great Barrier Reef,

that is very fragile. Corals need light and oxygen,

so they must live in clean waters.

The Australian Aborigines believe that at the beginning of time, there was nothing - the land was flat and

dark and it was cold. Under the ground the Ancestral Beings were sleeping. When they awoke, they found

that there was no light, so they created the sun. They also created all the natural elements, such as water,

fire, the sun, the earth, the moon, the stars. These ancestral beings were men and women and also birds

and animals, but they behaved like humans. They hunted and fought. They shaped the land, creating

mountains, trees, lakes, dunes and all the animals. They also created the People (Aborigines) who are

the descendants of the ancestral Beings. When they finished their work, they sank back into the earth.

Some became rocks, trees, or even small islands. The Ancestors left signs of their presence all over the

land. The Aboriginal people consider sacred these places.
