This colorful presentation, organized by Department Chair James Cusick and Curator of Popular Culture Collections Jim Liversidge, illustrates how cultural icons make their way into the comics and how characters from the comics became “national obsessions.” The exhibition features promotional tie-ins from the world of Walt Disney Productions (including vintage items from the Davy Crockett marketing phenomenon of the mid-1950s), Peanuts (featuring a display of material spanning the transition from comic strips to theatre and animation to books and toys), Star Wars (when mass marketing became an art form), and the enduring and timeless appeal of Superman and Batman. The exhibition will run from March 21 through May 31 in the Smathers Library second floor exhibition gallery (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday). A reception will be held Thursday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. in the gallery. In September 2007 Helen Safa, Ph.D., professor emerita in the UF Center for

Latin American Studies and longtime UF leader in research and teaching, was awarded the 2007 Silvert Award from the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). This special recognition is LASA’s highest award for lifetime achievement in the fi eld of Latin American and Caribbean studies. Dr. Safa has published numerous books, articles and book chapters on issues of gender, poverty, race and family in her distinguished career. She has also received grants for the study of migration, African-American identity and diversity. See the following link for further details on her work: http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/Forum/2007/Summer.pdf.

A present focus of Dr. Safa is the creation of a digital collection on women and social change. These forthcoming e-resources will draw from the materials and fi eld notes of Dr. Safa and from other pioneering scholars. Dr. Safa has pledged $10,000 to initiate digital work and has challenged others to donate as well. In addition, she has generously agreed to match every gift above $500 donated

through December 31, 2008 (up to a total of an additional $15,000) to support the building of the Women in Development Collection and endowment. At press time, $8,050 has been raised to meet her challenge.

As Dr. Safa says, “UF has long had an extraordinary concentration of talent in the area of Women In Development. Scholars such as Marianne Schmink, Sandra Russo, Mickey Swisher, Carmen Diana Deere, not to mention Anita Spring and myself, from a variety of disciplines,

are all pioneers in the fi eld. So it is logical for the UF Libraries to preserve their research materials and books. I hope that UF students and other researchers will take advantage of these materials for their work. It may help them to realize how much progress Third World women have made since 1975, when the UN Decade for Women was inaugurated. We in the advanced industrial countries have long since passed the time where we thought we could teach them. Now, hopefully, we work together to achieve common goals embracing equality and justice for all women.”

My collecting of oral histories from women involved in the Gainesville

women’s movement began in November, 2006 under the auspices of the Ronald E. McNair Scholar Program and the guidance of Dr. Trysh Travis at the UF Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research.

Collaboration with the UF Digital Library Center has produced an effi cient collection site (http://www.ufl ib.ufl .edu/UFDC/?s=rwg&m=hitletter) that allows the user to view, zoom, search and download images of archival documents, and an educational exhibit site that contextualizes the collection by providing a comprehensive history of the local women’s movement.

Radical Women in Gainesville documents the valiant history of feminists who helped reform the conservative Gainesville college town in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. The collection is comprised of photos, oral histories, self-published newsprints, newsletters, brochures, notes from feminist organizations and other original documents.

The Radical Women in Gainesville online digital collection exhibit offi cially opened March 1 in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The Gainesville women’s history movement dates back to 1968, when two Gainesville women wrote “Towards a Female Liberation Movement,” the political essay that propelled the static national women’s movement into action. Local women also founded one of the fi rst fi ve Women’s Liberation Groups in the nation. Today, Gainesville’s rich and active women’s community is one of many descendants of the women’s movement. Some of the

radical women, now between the ages of 50 and 80, still actively participate in local NOW chapters and in other organizations.

Radical Women in Gainesville is a developing collection and exhibit site that memorializes the work of local radical feminists while preserving historical documents for future generations to access for research and empowerment. The collection continues to grow as local women contribute their personal collections to the repository. Future collections are planned to include radical women throughout Florida.

For more information or to talk with the exhibit curator, contact Leila Adams or the University of Florida Digital Library Center at dlc@ufl ib.ufl .edu or (352) 273-2900.

Leila Adams recently received a bachelor’s degree in English from UF with a minor in Women’s Studies. She is a Ronald E. McNair scholar and a scholar in the University Scholars Program, two undergraduate research programs. She has applied to a number of Library and Information Sciences graduate programs and hopes to ultimately earn a doctoral degree in Media Studies from Rutgers University, studying the ways in which online exhibits and digital collections transform small communities.

Jim Haskins exhibit

celebrated his life and works

An exhibition celebrating the unique contributions of scholar, writer, activist and professor James (Jim) Haskins was on display in the Special Collections exhibit space on the second fl oor of Smathers

Library during the month of February through March 15, 2008.

James S. Haskins (1941-2005) was raised in the segregated African-American community in

Demopolis, Alabama. Born into a large family, Jim used books as a way to fi nd peace and to develop his imagination. Ironically, he obtained his books from a white woman because as a young Negro he

was not permitted to enter the local public library.

He went to Alabama State College where he became involved in the Civil Rights movement and was

eventually dismissed because of his activism. However, his talent and passion for learning led him to earn a full scholarship to Georgetown University where he earned his degree in 1960. His early work refl ected the struggle and achievements

of African Americans as they persevered through loss and overwhelming odds. His fi rst book, Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher chronicles his personal efforts in this regard.

Haskins alternated between his two homes in New York City and Gainesville, where he served on the faculty of the English Department at the University of Florida until his death in 2005. He authored

more than 160 books for adults and children, including many non-fi ction and biographical works about African Americans. Joel Buchanan, curator of the exhibit noted, “He put Negro life and experience

in very simple terms that were easily understood by children, which is very special.”

Haskins was the recipient of numerous book and writing awards, including fi ve Coretta Scott King

Honor Awards for various works for children and young adults. These included the highly acclaimed Bayard Rustin: Behind the Scenes of the Civil Rights Movement in 1998. In 1977 he was the recipient of

the Coretta Scott King Author Award for The Story of Stevie Wonder. All of his books and awards were

displayed in the exhibit cases, along with numerous local awards and honors. An entire exhibit case was devoted to Haskins’ work chronicling African musicians, jazz and nightlife. Awards and

recognition for books for the adult trade audience included the 1979 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence in writing in the fi eld of music, for Scott Joplin: The Man Who Made Ragtime; and the English-Speaking Union’s selection of Bricktop,

written with Bricktop, as a Book-Across-the-Sea in 1983. His book Mr. Bojangles, written with N.R. Mitgang, was the subject of a Showtime movie starring Gregory Hines. In addition, his book The Cotton Club was the inspiration for the motion

picture of the same title in 1984, and the exhibit included a continuously running video of the fi lm.

Another exhibit case focused on his research and work on Voodoo and Hoodoo: Their Tradition and Craft as Revealed by Actual Practitioners. Many of Haskins’ personal effects and art works were also transmitted to Special Collections, and these objects were interspersed with the more scholarly

materials to create personal connections between Haskins and viewers of the exhibition. These included pieces of furniture from his home and offi ce: his leather armchair, wooden coat-rack and a hand-stitched quilt. Haskins’ ever-present leather

briefcase, eyeglasses and tweed jacket with suede elbow-patches complete the image often recalled by his former students, who said he always “looked like a professor.” Haskins dedicated himself to

educating humanity about the African American experience, and always maintained a dignity and quiet intelligence which was noted and respected by all who knew him.

The exhibit provided a sneak preview of the yet to-be processed Jim Haskins Collection at UF. This collection contains his writings, manuscripts, oral histories, personal correspondence and research materials, and is housed in Special Collections.

For more information on the Jim Haskins Collection please contact Florence M. Turcotte, curator of literary manuscripts, at (352) 273-2755.

Suzy Covey Comic Book

Collection

Suzy Covey’s volunteer commitment to this collection was a testament to her generosity of spirit and it is only fi tting that this collection be named for her.

The web pages that describe the collection are located at http://www.ufl ib.ufl .edu/spec/belknap/comics/comics.htm.

The Suzy Covey Comic Book Collection directly supports the Comic Studies Program offered by the Department of English at the University of Florida, but its holdings are open to all having an interest in the fi eld. The collection is still growing, and is useful for those interested in the history and development of sequential art formats, particularly in the United States and includes original and reprint comic books, strips, caricatures and related items. The collection holds items from every recognized “Age” of comics as well as every genre, including daily humor strips and political satire as well as superhero, funny animal and underground comics.

Suzy Covey Comic Book Fund

The Suzy Covey Comic Book Fund has also been established to honor Covey by supporting the collection. Gifts to the fund will honor her memory as a friend, colleague and librarian. When the fund balance reaches $30,000, it will become an endowment that will sustain and expand the collection that she cared for so lovingly. If you wish to make a contribution, please make your check payable to the University of Florida Foundation, Inc., and note the Suzy Covey Fund in the memo fi eld. Contributions can be mailed to the Offi ce of Development, George A. Smathers Libraries, P.O. Box 117001, Gainesville, FL 32611.

The James Haskins

Endowment

Kathleen Benson Haskins, widow of the late James Haskins, has pledged a challenge gift of $25,000 to support the

James Haskins Collection if the libraries can match the funds by the end of 2009.

The funds will help raise an awareness of the collection’s existence and build a close relationship between the collection and its

use by scholars. A second goal is to build a Visiting Scholar Fellowship in African American Studies at UF.

For more information on the James Haskins Endowment, contact Sam Huang, associate dean for advancement and development, at (352) 273-2505.

The libraries of the University of Florida form the largest information resource system in the state of Florida. Nine campus libraries support the university’s increasingly broad research and instruction programs. Over the past 100 years, faculty and librarians have built hundreds of specialized collections, now totaling more than four million volumes, printed in practically every written language by publishers throughout the world.

The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida includes specialized collections in science, architecture, art, history, languages and music. Our collections cover all areas of contemporary knowledge, from agriculture to zoology and from philosophy to history. All of the libraries serve all of the university’s faculty and students, but each has a special mission to be the primary support of specifi c colleges and degree programs. The libraries support the very best educational, research and service performance by university faculty and students using the latest on-line technology and time-honored methods of collection and preservation.

Padre Cícero exhibit

reception: Views from the

Ralph Della Cava Gift

by Richard PhillipsLatin American Collection

With generous support of the Libraries’ Howe Society, the George A. Smathers Libraries hosted a reception to

honor collection donor Ralph Della Cava of New York on Sunday, September 23, 2007 in the Special Collections Research Room. This reception marked the formal opening of an exhibit of rare books, photos and miscellanea focused on Brazilian priest Padre Cícero and his legendary life as a spiritual and political leader in the early decades of the 20th century.

Approximately 100 faculty, students and other guests gathered to greet Dr. Della Cava and hear several talks on this gift and the importance of Padre Cícero in Brazilian culture. Traditional music from Brazil was performed by UF campus ensemble Jacaré to entertain attendees. Typical Brazilian food was served and fi lm clips from a documentary about Padre Cícero were shown.

For copies of a guide to the Ralph Della Cava collection, please contact Richard Phillips at ricphil@ufl ib.ufl .edu. Thanks are extended to the UF Center for Latin American Studies and to the UF Department of Religion for support on this project.

Meet Samuel Huang, the libraries’ new associate dean for advancement and development

by Barbara HoodPublic Information Offi cer

Samuel T. (Sam) Huang joined the Smathers Libraries on February 20 as

the new associate dean for advancement and development. He brings a wide range of experience from library fundraising to librarian and teaching practices.

Most recently he served as associate dean for external relations at the University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, Arizona, since 2000. He was responsible for planning, directing and managing fundraising activities and creating new fundraising programs for the libraries. He participated with the dean, library functional teams and the strategic long-range planning group in the strategic planning of new projects and initiatives.

Prior to his position at Arizona, Huang held multiple positions at Northern Illinois University including curator of rare books and special collections, library services for students with special needs, coordinator of computer reference services and assistant director of the undergraduate library.

At UF, Huang will plan and direct the major fundraising activities and manage the development, public information and grant components of the libraries. Working collaboratively with the library directors, chairs and librarians, he has primary responsibility for directing library efforts that encompass major gifts, donor stewardship, development of public support groups, fundraising event coordination and relations between the libraries, its development council, the University of Florida and the UF Foundation, Inc.

Huang believes that libraries, like few other campus units, touch almost every individual student and faculty member, and directly enhance the learning and teaching experience. “Without a doubt, the library is the center of any university,” said Huang.

His fi rst order of businesses will be to learn what our students’ and libraries’ needs are. Armed with that information, he will match our library donors’ needs and values. Then, we can create a plan to help donors meet those needs and support their values.

Huang says, “The UF Libraries is an excellent library system with friendly and knowledgeable faculty and staff. I look forward to working with library faculty and staff to achieve the university’s mission and advance the UF Libraries to the next level as one of the top research libraries in the nation.”

Huang earned a master of science degree in special education and a master of arts degree in library and information studies from Northern Illinois University. His bachelor’s degree in English language and literature is from Tamkang University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Angewandte Chemie International Edition Backfi les $20,000

Angewandte Chemie International Edition is one of the prime chemistry journals in the world. The journal publishes a mixture of review articles, highlights and communications weekly. Additionally, Nobel lectures in chemistry and related fi elds are regularly published. The University of Florida subscribes to this important journal and has online full-text available to researchers from 1998 to the present. The Backfi les would increase UF’s full-text availability and allow researchers access to all full-text from 1962 to the present.

Textbooks for high-enrollment coursesDuring Spring 2007, the Textbook Project provided textbooks for high-enrollment science courses available for check-out in the Marston Science Library. Through a one time funding of $5,000, over 50 textbooks were purchased to place on reserve at the library. The success of this project was overwhelming with the most popular books getting checked out over 300 times.Donations for textbooks are requested for

additional purchases. Of particular need is the 6th edition of the textbook used for Calculus I, II & III (MAC2311, MAC2312, MAC2313): Calculus: Early Transcendentals by James Stewart.

GAINESVILLE FLPERMIT NO 94

The University of Florida’s capital campaign, Florida Tomorrow, kicked off September 28, 2007. The Smathers Libraries welcomes with enthusiasm our goal of $20,000,000. With your support of the campaign, the George A. Smathers Libraries can meet the challenges that the future will bring to the libraries as we enhance our role in the university’s successful mission of teaching and research.

As we meet these challenges and explore the opportunities of this century, our legacy to future generations must be a library system that acknowledges the real and evolving needs of its users – students, faculty, businesses and a broad array of other organizations and citizens throughout Florida and beyond. The library is the cornerstone of our information-based society, and its role has never had greater importance to UF’s future.

A great library is essential to a great university. Your support of the libraries strengthens the University of Florida…and Florida Tomorrow.
