Welcome to Paper Mill Playhouse, and also to Cherry Tree Lane! As both Producing Artistic Director and director of Mary Poppins, I am delighted to share this magical jewel

of a musical with you. Within this cast of 34 “practically perfect” performers you will happily recognize some familiar faces from previous shows on our stage, including Elena Shaddow, Jill Paice, Adam Monley, Liz McCartney, Bill Nolte, and Dierdre Friel, alongside dazzling newcomers Mark Evans, Danielle K. Thomas, Blakely Slaybaugh, and so many more! I am also thrilled to welcome back to Paper Mill as my first mate the brilliantly talented choreographer Denis Jones, whose insightful aesthetic expertise is always so beneficial, plus the exceptional Meg Zervoulis makes her mainstage debut as music director and conductor. In addition, we have assembled a stunning design team showcasing the imaginatively

colorful costumes of Leon Dobkowski, scenery by Tim Mackabee, Charlie Morrison’s ever-impressive lighting effects, masterful sound design by Randy Hansen, and wigs and makeup by Leah Loukas. With the support of our friends and frequent partners at Disney Theatrical Group, of course the co-creators of Mary Poppins, I couldn’t have asked for a better, more capable team in putting together this big season-closing production!

I have always loved the Mary Poppins stories, which first appeared in P. L. Travers’s children’s books in 1934 and were made most famous in the 1964 Walt Disney film starring Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, and Glynis Johns. I have a very special affinity for the title character because I am honored to call Dame Julie Andrews a close friend. I was lucky enough to work with her in the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria, and we are still in touch.

Before I close, be sure to order your subscription to next season’s incredible lineup including exciting premieres and familiar favorites: The Honeymooners, Annie, The Outsider, The Sting, and Half Time. See page 18 for details—subscribing is the only way to guarantee your seats at these terrific shows.

And now, sit back and enjoy Mary Poppins ! I hope you have a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious good time!

P. L. TRAVERS (Author of the Mary Poppins Stories) was born Helen Lyndon Goff in 1899 in Australia, in a residence above the bank where her father was branch manager. She began to write while a member of a touring stage company, and in 1924, able to support herself as a journalist, she moved to England. She wrote a number of books in addition to the Mary Poppins stories. Fascinated by myth and fairy tales, she traveled widely, living for a time with the Navajo. She served as writer-in-residence at both Smith and Radcliffe colleges in Massachusetts, and she received an honorary doctorate from Chatham College in Pittsburgh. She died in London in 1996.
