Welcome to St. Rose
We are proud to celebrate the centennial of our church
this year. St. Rose is a historical landmark of the city of
Quincy. This church is considered as representative of
the Venetian Gothic style: a mix of Gothic,
Romanesque, and Byzantine styles. The 1912 stained
glass windows are characteristic of the Munich Pictorial
Style. This style is characterized by almost lifelike
images of saints and figures with landscape back-
grounds.
Before the church was reopened, 3 marble altars, a
matching altar rail, and a pulpit were installed. On June
10, 2012, our bishop will consecrate these altars. Do not
miss this beautiful ceremony! It will begin at 10 AM. It
will include the celebration of a Pontifical Mass with the
conferring of the sacrament of confirmation and an
outdoor procession of the Blessed Sacrament as we
celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi.
In the fall of 2012, we will begin a thorough restoration
of our windows. If you wish to know more about this
project, do not hesitate to take a copy of our Restoration
brochure in the vestibule of the church and/or to contact
us.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but a
chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member of
your local parish. To join, just give us a call. After both
Sunday Masses, the community meets in the hall to
socialize. Everyone is welcome! Coffee & Donuts are
available.

From the Chaplain’s Desk: Fifth Sunday after Easter
"If you ask the Father anything in my name, he will give it to
you. So far, Jesus told his disciples, you have not asked anything
in My Name.” Does this criticism of Our Lord apply to us? Do
we pray in the name of Jesus? What does it mean?
First our prayer must be related to the person and the mission
of Jesus: "I came forth from the Father and I am come into the
world. I leave the world and I go to the Father." The Second
Person of the Blessed Trinity came on earth, assumed a human
nature, in order to redeem the human race, to bring back with
Him to the Father all those who would believe in Him. To go
with Jesus, to see the Father, we must not only believe in Jesus
and his teaching, but we must also live accordingly, we must
perform the works of faith. The object of our prayer must be
related to the work of salvation and sanctification of Jesus, not to
our selfish wishes. We can ask not only for spiritual graces or
favors but also for temporal goods like health, wealth, success if
they are conformed to God’s salvific plan.
Secondly, our prayer must be humble. We must acknowledge
our status of creature: we exist because God loved us and
willed us. Everything we are or anything good we may do, we do
it because of the qualities that God gave us and his continual
support. We must acknowledge our sinfulness. Jesus did not
come for the righteous but for the sinner, not for the healthy but
for the sick. Our prayer must be sincere and confident in God's
mercy and love for us, for all. When we pray we acknowledge
ourselves as little children who are totally confident and
dependent on our heavenly Father.
Because of our pride and selfishness, God sometimes does not
grant the object of our prayer right away, he wants us to pray
with perseverance. There was a corrupt judge, told us Jesus,
who would not give justice to a poor widow. She did not have
the money to bribe him but she came again and again to cry for
justice under the windows of his house. The judge became so
tired of her shouting that he granted what she asked for just to get
rid of her. Jesus told us we should pray God with the same
perseverance that this woman had. Not that God is unfair or in
any way like that wicked judge, but he wishes us to persevere so
that our prayer be purified from pride and selfishness.
The liturgy today expresses beautifully (Collect) how we should
pray: "O God from whom all good things proceed, be generous
to your petitioners so that by your inspiration we may know what
is right, and by your guidance we may do it. Through Our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Church News Sunday, May 13: 5th Sunday of Eastertide, Mother’s Day:

Thursday, May 17: Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. Masses at 12:10 pm & 6 pm. No 7 am Mass today. This
feast is a holy day of obligation in the Universal Church but
not here in Illinois. However, I encourage everyone to
celebrate this feast by attending Mass. We will celebrate its
solemnity on Sunday, May 20.
Sunday, May 20: Sunday after the Ascension: Solemnity
of the Ascension of the Lord. Coffee & Donuts after each
Mass: Steve & Carlene Blickhan. Collection Counters: Leo
Zanger & Mary Penrose. 2nd Collection for the Catholic
Communication Campaign (CCC). This Collection
communicates the Good News through Catholic social media
activities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television,
radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our
(arch)diocese, so please be generous in this Collection. CCC
is how the Good News gets around to you.
Did you know that any act of charity, no matter how
small, can be sent to heaven as a prayer? Simply letting
somebody in line ahead of you at the store, or helping mom
set the table for supper can be offered as an act of love to
God. It’s not the greatness of the deed but the love with
which it is done. Please consider offering this prayer for
Bishop Paprocki and including it in our spiritual bouquet.
Catholic Bishops call for Prayer for Religious Liberty,
especially June 21, 2012–July 4, 2012. USCCB has posted
prayer resources at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/
religious-liberty/conscience-protection/resources-on-
conscience-protection.cfm. The heart of the campaign is a
new “Prayer for Religious Liberty” prayer card, available
electronically. To order prayer cards from the Office for
Social Concerns, e-mail [email protected] or telephone 217-
321-1167 and let us know how many cards you need. The
prayer cards can also be ordered at www.usccbpublishing.org.

basket. Please write "Fr. Drew's Reception" on the outside of
the envelope. Please sign up before May 20th so we know
what we need to buy.

FSSP Priestly Vocations Assistance Campaign: Have you
noticed the posters with the seminarians of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Seminary in Lincoln, Nebraska? They are about 65
of them studying to become priests of the Fraternity of St.
Peter. Feel free to take a reply envelope located at the bottom
of the poster if you wish to support the formation of future
FSSP priests. Your donation will be used only for that
purpose. Thank you in advance!

Saturday, June 2, 2012: 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of St. Rose. 10 AM Solemn High Mass. 5 PM
Organ Recital by Gary Blickhan followed by a formal Dinner
in the hall at 6 PM. At the end of the Dinner, we will have the
famous XXth century Catholic Writer G.K. Chesterton talk to
us through Comedian Chuck Chalberg. Organ recital is free.
Free will donation for the dinner. Make sure you reserve your
seat quickly as seating is limited to 200 for the dinner. You
should receive a formal invitation in the mail by the end of the
month.
G. K. Chesterton is on a speaking tour of the U.S. He has
not told us what his topic is, so be prepared for anything. No
doubt he will tell us a good deal about his childhood, since
that childhood explains a lot about his views of the larger
world. He will also defend the Faith. He will also throw in a
paradox or three. He might also turn out to be very funny
even while being very serious. After all, as Chesterton
himself put it, the opposite of funny is not serious; the
opposite of funny is not funny.
Sunday, June 10, 2012: 10 AM Pontifical High Mass celebrated by Bishop Thomas John Paprocki. Consecration
of the altars and confirmation ceremony. We will celebrate the
Solemnity of Corpus Christi with a short procession of the
Blessed Sacrament after Mass. A reception will follow in the
hall. No reservation required but come early for a good seat!
