LEO THE GREAT OUR PATRON SAINT He was a Roman aristocrat, and was the first pope to have been called "the Great". He is perhaps best known for having met Attila the Hun in 452 and persuaded him to turn back from his invasion of Italy. It was during Leo's papacy that the term "Pope," which previously meant any bishop, came to exclusive- ly mean the Bishop of Rome. In 440, Leo was unanimously elected as the next pope to succeed Pope Sixtus III. Pope Leo saw himself as privileged to sit in the Chair of St Peter and worked diligently as "Peter's succes- sor." Over time, Leo became known as one of the best administrative popes of the ancient Church. During his reign, he fought to preserve the unity of the Church and its faith. Pope Leo I continuously worked to oppose and root out numerous here- sies threatening the Western Church, including Pelagianism and Manichae- ism. He wrote a letter setting down the Church's official teaching on Je- sus Christ as One Person with a hu- man and a divine nature that could not be separated. To this day, Leo's letter is praised, not only for bringing peace, but for preserving the fullness of Christian truth and doctrine. Along with his dynamic faith and outstand- ing theological wisdom, Pope Leo I was courageous. He led Rome's defense against Attila the Hun's barbarian invasion on Italy in 452, by taking on the role of peacemaker. Pope Leo I was renowned for his profoundly spiritual sermons. Nearly 100 sermons and 150 letters of Leo I have been preserved. Leo died on November 10, 461, and wished to be buried as close as possible to St. Peter's tomb. In 1754, Pope Benedict XIV proclaimed Leo I a Doctor of the Church. Pope Leo I faithfully held to the belief that everything he did and said as pope represented Jesus Christ, and St. Peter. His feast day is celebrated on No- vember 10.

He was a Roman aristocrat, and was the first pope to have been called "the Great". It was during Leo's papacy that the term "Pope," which previously meant any bishop, came to exclusive-ly mean the Bishop of Rome. BROTHER, CAN YOU SPARE A COAT? St. Leo Social Justice Committee is sponsoring a “Coat Drive”

to aid and welcome incoming refugees from Afghanistan the week-ends of November 14/21. Fifty-seventy refugees have already ar-rived in the Rochester area with a total of 200 expected in the near future...many arrive in need and ill prepared for the upcoming win-ter weather.

Bins for both “NEW” and “GENTLY USED” coats will be in the Parish Life Center. Coats for men, women and children are needed so please pick up an item the next time you are out shop-ping...and search those closets! While primarily focusing on coats, contributions of hats, gloves and mittens are also welcomed and appreciated.

If unable to contribute any clothing but you wish to help, mon-etary donations can be made. Place your donation in an envelope marked “Coat Drive” and placed in the collection box. Checks should be made out to St. Leo Church with “Coat Drive” in the memo field.

Help us reach our goal of 100 coats! Working in conjunction with the Catholic Family Center, coats received will be delivered to the CFC who will distribute items to incoming refugees; any sur-plus will be distributed to the CFC supported shelters including Francis Center, Sanctuary House and Place of Hope.

ELECTRONIC GIVING Thank you to all who have signed up for electronic giving. Much time is save by using electronic giving. It helps facilitate our

bookkeeping. Did you forget your envelope again when you came to church? Do you want to find an easy way to give to the church without wor-

rying about writing checks and finding envelopes? Then why not sign up for electronic giving. It is easy to do. There is a simple form (in the Parish Life Center) that needs to be filled out. You can choose to give weekly or monthly. You can choose whether or not to add the Holydays to your electronic giving schedule. Just fill out the form and send it along with a voided check and you are done.

If you ever need anything changed, added or subtracted or stopped, all it takes is a simple phone call or an email. We would be happy to email the form to you to get started. If you are interested in starting electronic giving or have questions, feel free to call the Parish Office at 392-2710.
