how you spend your time.Include the number of hours on each
task or activity.

END OF CHAPTER 4
Pope Pius XII 25
Here I Am
GOAL
To examine various ministries, and seek to discover the ones to which God may be calling me.
Pope Pius XII 26
Here I Am
• Finding comfort from others
• Discuss With whom do you find it easy to talk
to about personal matters? What is it about this person that
makes you feel okay to talk to them? As a group do you know of peers that
your fellow teens use in a similar fashion?
Pope Pius XII 27
Here I Am
• Finding comfort from others (2)
• Discuss What are the characteristics of the
individuals who make your fellow teens comfortable talking to them?
Do these characteristics reflect one’s baptismal call?
Pope Pius XII 28
Here I Am
• Finding comfort from others (3)
• Reflect Has anyone ever approached you
in this manner? If yes, why did they choose you? If not, is there a reason why your
peers might not be comfortable talking to you in this manner?
Pope Pius XII 29
Here I Am
• Our Universal Baptismal Call – select one person who lives it out. Whom did you select and why? How does this person demonstrate
his/her baptismal call to be a Christian, “a person in whom and through whom Christ lives,” every day? (Priest, Prophet, King)
Is simply going to Church adequately fulfilling the baptismal call?
Pope Pius XII 30
Here I Am
• Read Matthew 20:28• Read Luke 22:27.• Discuss
What specifically is Jesus trying to get his followers to do?
How do I specifically live this in today’s world?
What behavioral change is Christ calling me to make?
Pope Pius XII 31
Here I Am
• The Ministerial Priesthood– In Chapter 2 we discussed those in
Israel who were set aside/anointed king, priest, and prophet.
– To serve – not be served.– Ministry and Service – words are
inseparable.– Universal priesthood – all of us – binds
us to minister to serve one another.
Pope Pius XII 32
Here I Am
Since Vatican II we have seen these ministries flourish:
LectorUsher/Hospitality MinisterAltar ServerEucharistic MinisterBereavement MinistryTeachersetc.
Pope Pius XII 33
Here I Am
• The one true ministry is the ministry of Jesus Christ
• What we call ministries are formalized functions of the Church to assist us in performing our one true ministry.
• One’s individual ministry flows out of the one ministry of Christ.
• It can be either public or private.
Pope Pius XII 34
Here I Am
Discuss
• As we began we discussed people your peers could talk to about personal matters. Do you feel this person is fulfilling his/her part in the ministry of Christ?
• Are they doing this privately or publicly?
Pope Pius XII 35
Here I Am• Refer back to the gifts and talents you
listed at our last session.• Design a project using those gifts and
talents. What gifts and talents did you list for your
project?What project would you do?
Requires at least 15 hours of your time and at least two other people.
Who would benefit? How?Did you discover or learn something about
yourself in planning this project?Do you feel challenged to do this project after
you leave here this weekend?
Pope Pius XII 36
Here I Am
• Remember back to our weekend at Rancho Alegre. How did you feel about the project that we did to improve the camp?
• What gifts did you use in this project? How were those gifts employed?
Pope Pius XII 37
Here I Am
• Read Luke 18:9-14 What is Luke trying to tell us? In doing your project, do you see
yourself as the Pharisee (completing the requirement) Tax Collector (I am doing this for Christ)
What makes something a ministry as opposed to a task, chore, project, or job?
Pope Pius XII 38
Here I Am
• Not all service is a ministry.
• Not all ministries are authentic
• What is the underlying reason for doing it?– Big Shot? Out in front of the crowd?
• Ministry grows out of a fundamental option of faith to be Christ.– Not what is done, but the spirit of doing
Pope Pius XII 39
Here I Am
• Discuss these two passages: “Service is the rent we pay for
our room on earth.” “This service that you perform
is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” (2 Corinthians (9:12)
Pope Pius XII 40
Here I Am
Reflect What ministries do you currently
perform privately? What public ministries do you
currently perform
Discuss in your group In what ministries do you see yourself
participating and why?
Pope Pius XII 41
Here I Am
Below are some ministries. Check those you might wish to do. List others
Altar Server, Lector, Eucharistic Minister at Mass, Building and Grounds, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick, Music Ministry, Usher, Hospitality, Sacristan, Bereavement, Youth Ministry, Religious Education, Early Childhood Formation, St. Vincent de Paul Society (Poor), Homeless families, Scouting, Jail, Hospital, Immigrant, Unwed Mothers, Pro-Life, Widowed and Divorced, Vocations Awareness, Social Justice,
Pope Pius XII 42
Here I Am
• DiscussWhy did you select the two ministries? What did you learn in the interviews? What training or education is required? How would you benefit personally? How would the secular community
benefit?How would the faith community
benefit?
Pope Pius XII 43
Here I Am
The Interviews – 2 different ones.• Of what does this ministry consist?• What is it like?• What is good about this ministry?• Is there anyway this ministry can be
destructive?• What personal fulfillments do you get out
of this ministry?• What type of personality is needed for this
ministry?
Pope Pius XII 44
Here I Am
DiscussCan either/or both ministry help you
answer your universal/baptismal call? How can each ministry hinder you from
answering your baptismal call? After doing the interviews, was there
anything that you learned that would cause you to change your interest? If so, what is it?
Pope Pius XII 45
Here I Am
• Reflect and discuss What should you be getting out of each
of your ministries? How can you evaluate your success in
these ministries? Are you totally committed to these
ministries?
Pope Pius XII 46
Here I Am
Jot down what you have learned or discovered in this chapter.
