Pope High School Master Course Guide 2014-2015 A few notes about this course guide:

Academic classes have been recommended by your teachers after reviewing your grades, test scores and previous classroom performance. It is not the philosophy of the school to place students in classes which the school believes will be discouraging or overwhelming to students. While we do encourage students to challenge themselves with the most rigorous classes they can handle, please be careful if you decide to take a course different than what your teacher recommended. If you choose a class not recommended by the school, you will need to make the change on your student’s registration form. By signing the registration form, you assume full responsibility for the change in your student’s course placement. School personnel will not be obligated to make adjustments in the required work of the class, provide additional individual help beyond that which is provided to all students in the class, or to change a schedule during the school year.

Classes are offered based on student interest. If we do not have enough students to justify a course, it will not be offered. Any students impacted by the decision to not offer a course will be given the opportunity to select another course.

Pope High School does not do a “drop-add” time. Make sure you select your courses carefully.

Graduation Requirements In September, 2007, the State Board of Education passed a new set of graduation requirements that went into effect for students enrolling in the ninth grade for the first time in 2008-2009 and beyond. The rule was revised in conjunction with the implementation of the new Georgia Performance Standards in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, as well as electives. All students will be required to complete a total of 23 units for graduation. All students must complete:

4 units of English

4 units of Science

4 units of Mathematics

3 units of Social Studies

3 units from : Foreign Language* and/or CTAE and/or Fine Arts for all students

4 units additional electives

½ unit health

½ unit personal fitness *Students planning to enter or transfer into a University System of Georgia Institution MUST take at least two units of the same foreign language. Some colleges such as Clemson and the College of Charleston require 3 units of the same foreign language. **Note - Some colleges require a unit of Fine Arts such as University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee and all California Public Colleges Please consult the website of the colleges you are interested in for detailed requirements. Testing Requirements to Graduate **There are 7 required End of Course Tests (EOCT ). They include the following: 9th Grade Literature, America Literature, Biology, Algebra Geometry, US History and Economics. The EOCT counts 20% of the course grade and the course must be passed in order to graduate. **Students are also required to pass the Georgia High School Writing Test given during the junior year to graduate Promotion Requirements

Students must pass their English, Math and Science courses in 9th and 10th grade to be promoted to the next grade level as well as earning 5,10 and 16 credits respectively for promotion to the next AO/Grade level.

MATH The Cobb Mathematics Program uses the objectives of the Common Core as the basis of instruction. It is designed to accommodate students with diversified and changing (career) goals. The mathematics program provides experiences that encourage and enable students to value mathematics, gain confidence in their own mathematical ability, become mathematical problem solvers, communicate mathematically, and reason mathematically. The mathematics curriculum is organized so as to permit all students to progress as far into mathematics as their achievement with the topic will allow. The expectation is that mathematical ideas will grow and deepen as students’ progress through the curriculum and that the consolidation of learning is essential for all students during the senior year.

Because graduation requirements established by the Georgia State Department of Education vary by year of graduation and diploma type, students should consult the graduation requirements section of this pamphlet for specific information pertaining to their situation. Internship I –IV is a course that enables students to participate in a mentor-supervised, on-the-job training experience for career awareness/exploration. PERSONAL FITNESS One Semester Graduation Req.

Personal Fitness is designed to help students understand why exercise and fitness are important in developing a healthy and active lifestyle. The course will emphasize successful strategies for maintaining good cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and body composition. It will follow a conceptual approach dealing with the following topics: the nature of fitness, assessing individual fitness, developing and maintaining a life-long fitness program, and developing an appreciation for efficient movement by viewing it as both an art and a science. Fitness progress and assessments will be made utilizing POLAR Heart Rate Monitor technology to determine cardiovascular fitness levels and their relation to the individuals target heart rate zone. Course is designed to develop a higher state of wellness through an understanding of preventive health strategies and health related fitness. Students spend classroom time learning knowledge and concepts that serve as the foundation for the development of overall wellness and activity time involved in a fitness program. An emphasis is placed on the decision-making process and preventive health care. This course is required for graduation.

This course is designed to introduce students to fundamental backpacking and camping skills to include environmental considerations, personal safety, and survival skills associated with adventure activities. JROTC NAVY I, II, III (Lassiter H.S.)

Naval Science I introduces students to the Navy JROTC Program, emphasizing leadership, citizenship, patriotism and a disciplined life style. Students participate in academics, close order drill, and physical fitness. The curriculum includes Navy JROTC organization and regulations, introduction to leadership, our nation and its people, sea power and maritime geography, oceanography, naval history, health and first aid. Additionally, students have the opportunity to advance in the Navy JROTC promotion system based on individual merit accomplishments and participation. Normally, first year students achieve the rate of Seamen during their first year. Students can continue to levels II & III.

JROTC NAVY IV (Lassiter H.S.)

Naval Science IV begins and ends with advanced leadership techniques to include applying leadership traits and principles. Students continue to develop their close order applying leadership traits and principles. Students continue to develop their close order drill ability and physical fitness and are expected to develop their instructional abilities in these areas. In addition to learning how to apply leadership techniques, Naval Science IV students are leaders within the Navy JROTC unit. Most are billet holders, meaning they are assigned jobs and responsibilities that they perform under the tutelage of the Naval Science Instructor and Associate Naval Science Instructor. Normally students have advanced through the promotion system achieving the rate of Chief Petty Officer, Ensign Lieutenant Junior Grade, Lieutenant, or Lieutenant Commander.
