    How Purdues Technology is U

Our greenhouse staff have combinedold and new techniques into a growthsystem for optimizing corn productionin greenhouses and growth chambers.Nutrient deficiencies are reduced andseed yield increased using automateddrip irrigation delivering fertilizersolution to a root media of calcinedclay, or porous ceramic.

Thepericarp, or seed coat, is the tissue that surroundsthe seed, protecting its contents.

It is the ovary of the corn kernel

Theendospermcarries the food energy for the plant-to-be in the form of starch.

The embryo, orgerm, is an immature plant, appearing

on the indented side of the kernel.oThis part of the kernel is alive and carries the genetic information for the kernel.
