Lesson 1: Art History Research

You are going to make your own pop culture homage to a famous painting.

• Find a famous painting that you like.

• Before you even read what it is about, try to interpret it for yourself.

Page 29: POP CULTURE HOMAGE 7 th Grade Unit

Lesson 1: Art History Research

Questions to ask yourself when interpreting:

•What title would you give to this painting? What made you decide on that title?

•What do you think is going on in this picture? How did you arrive at that idea? •What do you think this painting is about? How did you come up that idea? •Pretend you are inside this painting. What does it feel like? •Why do you suppose the artist made this painting? What makes you think that?

Guernica by Pablo Picasso It was created in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village in northern Spain, by German and Italian warplanes at the order of the Spanish Nationalist forces on 26 April 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.

Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.

Lesson 2: Pop Culture Homage Pencil Drawing

Think of a character/s that you would like to put into your painting.

You have two choices for this assignment:

A: Recreate the painting as it is and add your character/s to that painting in a way that makes sense with the original content.

B: Recreate the essence of the painting within the world of your character/s. (similar to the Simpson’s homage to M.C. Escher)
