A big Poona welcome to any new residents, you are all most welcome to come down to the community hall on a friday night for a home cooked meal and a few drinks (a great way to meet your fellow Poonarites!) The kitchen and licenced bar is run by our volunteers so meals and drinks are very reasonably priced. Some of the local issues and happenings around the Poona Community: If you are concerned with our waste services the Fraser Coast Regional Council has a survey on their website that you can fill out, the survey closes 29th June. We are currently in negotiations with the Fraser Coast Regional Council regarding the installation of CCTV cameras around the community hall precinct. The CEP group is having a meeting regarding the marking of walking trails with blue recycled posts on Thursday morning at 7.30am in the park beside the boat ramp. The CCC is installing a 31,000 ltr. non drinking water tank for the filling of the rural fire trucks in cases of emergency. Market Alley is to be remodeled by the Fraser Coast Regional Council next year sometime. They will be putting more grassed areas in with a winding path down the centre which will have lighting installed. Community gardens are being installed by our volunteers in the community hall precinct, the most suitable site being on the south eastern side of the hall up against the fence. The entertainment night, local group Grumpy Old Men, that was to be on the 26th May has been postponed, a tentative date of 3rd August has been proposed, more info to come. We have an English Pub night at the community hall on the 29th June. Local evergreen group "Still Rockin" will entertain with loads of fun guaranteed. The State of Origin rugby league games will be on the big screen at the community hall, BYO drinks and nibblies. The dates are, Wednesday 6th June (hall open 7pm.) Sunday 24th June ( time TBA) Wednesday 11th July (hall open 7pm.) The time of the year is fast approaching for the re-election of the Poona Community Progress Association committee, all positions on the committee will become vacant at our annual general meeting in August (time and date TBA.) Please consider becoming a committee member and be involved in the future for Poona. Our next general meeting is on the 9th June at 2pm. Remember, all Poona residents are most welcome to attend whether you are a member or not.

FISHING REPORT

There has been a cold chill in the air this week indicating that winter is on its way, and along with it comes our winter species. And with the quality of the fish we are already seeing, it’s shaping up to be an awesome season. Let’s check out the report. Spanish, Grey and School mackerel are in numbers, taking medium to deep diving lures and the quality Snapper have been reported from the Arch Cliffs along with Grunter up to the 2 kilos.

The Southern and Northern Gutters have been fishing well with anglers landing quality Grassy Sweetlip, Cockies, Scarlett’s, Hussar and a few reef Jacks.

A variety of Mackerel have been landed on small metal slugs off the jetty at Kingfisher Bay and Mackenzie’s Ledge is producing a mixed bag of reef fish including Estuary Cod, Blackall, Grassy Sweetlip and Purple Tusk Fish.

Anglers are getting their quota of Winter Whiting which have been reported on the drift between the reef Islands and Tinnanbah. The average size is still around that 23 cm mark. While large Summer Whiting have made their way in with fish up to 37 cm reported from Poona, Fig Tree, the diamonds and deep creek with yabbies or worms as the preferred bait.

We have had great reports of nice Flathead being caught in numbers on the flats at Maaroom, Boonoroo and Poona on the making tide. Flicking soft plastics like Squidgies Bio Tough Wrigglers in the bloodworm colour is one way to give it a go.

Large Squid are still in numbers throughout the Sandy Straits with some anglers landing them on Squid jigs around Deep Creek and Fig Tree while others are braving the chilli water and spearing them around Boonooroo Point.

Our mighty Mary River is still producing quality fish with Threadfin Salmon up to 10kg and some snodger grunter being landed this week. With the water temperature starting to drop, silver and black bream are now on the bite between Beaver Rock and River Heads.

VOLUNTEERS ARE WELCOMED.

Sandy Straits Rural Fire Brigade needs volunteers, with a wide range of skills, to keep the brigade running, equipment in good order and the community safe. The Rural Fire Service (RFS) is spread across 93% of Queensland and has approximately 1,500 brigades and 36,000 volunteers.

The purpose of a rural fire brigade is to operate in areas not covered by the Urban (town) service.

Being part of a rural brigade offers fantastic opportunities for self -development and volunteers receive training and skills that assist in all areas of brigade life. Brigade members learn about: Teamwork, Incident Management, Leadership skills, Fire Behavior, Safety, Communications and much, much more.

As a volunteer you can choose to undertake the training specific to your role and you can continue to develop additional skills. The last week of May we celebrate our volunteer’s contribution with Qld Volunteer Week. Celebrate by joining our brigade and help provide a safer environment for our surrounding villages.
