Yes, Pooch Mobile International is turning 21 in 2012. But first, just how did Chris start Pooch Mobile and maintain her success for so long, through recessions, ups and downs and other concerns that invariably crop up in any business? “To start with I was just washing and grooming dogs at home, which I loved doing and it earned me some extra money. But through word of mouth my business grew rapidly and before I knew it there was demand from further afield, so it made sense to expand my services to include mobile dog washing, travelling to customers’ homes to wash, care for and pamper the family dog,” says Chris. So the business was launched as a single mobile dog wash unit in 1991 operated by Chris, and once people saw the benefits to their dogs, success was instant. Chris created and launched the Aussie Pooch Mobile Pty Ltd in 1992 and was the first person to franchise a mobile dog washing business in the world. Pooch Mobile franchise system allows others to have a business that shares Chris’s passion for dogs. Her business began, and remains a family affair; with Chris’s husband David joining the team in 1996 and also many franchisees have their partners helping them too. Operators are able to work around their families while offering an excellent service to their customers, and also becoming an extended valued member of their customer’s family. After taking Australia by storm, Chris realized there was a global need for her business so after more research, launched as ‘The Pooch Mobile’ overseas. There are currently Pooch Mobile franchises in the United Kingdom, Malaysia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and the USA, with close to 200 operators worldwide. Chris’s motto is, and always has been “To be successful first you have to fall in love with what you do” The Pooch Mobile USA was launched by Richard and Annie Ellmers in 2005 and the success continues to grow. The Pooch Mobile continues to grow despite the recession and the Pet Industry is now referred to as the ‘Recession Resistant’ industry. To celebrate Pooch Mobile’s 21 st Birthday, we are expanding and The Pooch Mobile Franchises are now being offered in several states across the United States. But the celebrations don’t stop there…The Pooch Mobile USA has a very special offer for all new Franchisees – 10% discount (save up to $5,900) on a Pooch Mobile Franchise today!

Who would have thought that when 16-year-old Christine Taylor decided to start a part time dog washing and grooming business in her parent’s back yard, she would go on to expand it into a business that is still booming 21 years later?

Yes, Pooch Mobile International is turning 21 in 2012. But first, just how did Chris start Pooch Mobile and maintain her success for so long, through recessions, ups and downs and other concerns that invariably crop up in any business?

“To start with I was just washing and grooming dogs at home, which I loved doing and it earned me some extra money. Woman’s Best FriendWhile dogs are known as man’s best friend, women could rival men when it comes to best friend status. A study has shown that one in five women spend more time talking to their pets than their partner! A survey of 2000 female dog owners showed women share everything with their pooches and they aren’t afraid to show them real affection!

7 Easy Ways to Train Your Dog

1. Puppies understand three vocal tones: directing, praising and shaming. Your voice will naturally alter, but in the beginning it will help to exaggerate these tones to avoid confusing your dog.

2. Assign a word to routines you repeat on a daily basis, such as ‘inside’, ‘upstairs’ and ‘car’. Use these commands regularly to get Fido used to it.

3. There must never be any doubt in your dog’s mind about who is in charge. Make sure your commands are direct, using only the single word and in a tone that makes it clear that it is a command, not a request.

4. Your dog needs to be corrected immediately for misbehaving, so he can make the connection between poor behavior and your displeasure.

Correcting your pup half an hour later will only leave him confused.

5. Never hit your dog to correct him, as this will only make him fear you. The emphasis of training should always be on reward, not punishment.

6. Dogs learn by repetition and if you want them to understand the ‘no’ command you have to use either lead correction or some form of pressure and release via sound or body language such as stepping into their zone so they back up or move away and then rewarding the appropriate behavior once it is correct.

7. Stay calm. The calmer you are, the more responsive your dog will be. Flailing arms, bent posture and a raised voice signal chaos and an invitation to play.

Teaching your new puppy (or older dog) to become the well-mannered pooch you know he can be, takes practice and patience. Make it fun for

both you and Fido by following these training tips.

CanCer Proof

Your PoochBy taking a few simple measures, you can significantly reduce your dog’s chances of getting cancer.

Start with his food. Including green leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach etc.) or yellow and orange vegetables (carrots, squash) a couple of times a week has been shown to reduce the levels of some cancers in dogs, and don’t forget fruits and berries.

Be a smoke free environment as smok-ing around your dog increases the effects of passive smoking plus the chances of your dog getting asthma as well as lung, throat and mouth cancers.

Neutering or spaying your dog may also reduce the chance of your dog getting breast, ovarian, prostate and testicular cancers.

For further advice, speak with your Vet.

Hot Dogs• Dogs will need extra water in summer, so keep the bowl filled with clean water.

• Ensure they have a shady area if they are home alone.

• Light-colored or short-haired dogs may be sunburnt in summer, so keep some dog sunscreen handy.

• Walking in the early morning or late evening is best during summer to avoid exhaustion.

• Never leave your dog alone in a hot car — heat stroke can cause brain damage.

• Give you dog frozen treats. A frozen cup of beef stock, or ice cubes in their water bowl is a great treat.

Regular grooming of your dog is a must, particularly in the warmer spring and summer months.

As spring starts to warm up, dogs will begin to shed and lose their winter coats. If this fur is not removed as it starts to drop out, it will start to clump, or matt up in longer, fuller coated breeds. As it thickens this fur acts as an insulator, or a big blanket, not allowing fresh air to the skin causing overheating and itching and can create underlying skin problems.

This can be detrimental to the health of older or obese dogs that can tend to find it hard to cope with the heat during summer.

With regular brushing the dead coat can be stripped out as it starts to drop, leaving the skin invigorated, and the coat clean and healthy. Pooch Mobile Operators have access to various deshedding tools and brushes to suit all breeds and coats. Regular checks by the operators can also help to detect any ear and skin problems early.

Many dogs can be prone to these sorts of conditions due to grass seeds, pollens, humidity and other outside factors that come with spring. With The Pooch Mobile’s great range of shampoos and coat conditioners your dog’s skin and coat will look and feel great all year round.

Another alternative is to have your dog clipped for the summer months. Although there are many breeds that traditionally would not get clipped (for example border collies, retrievers, shepherds etc.), you may find that clipping back older and/or obese dogs

Eating Grass Is gooD

Eating grass is actually a perfectly normal activity for both

dogs and cats, and it is part of a normal healthy diet. Many

people are surprised when they see their pets do this, and

often assume they are sick, or lacking in some dietary nutrients.

In actual fact, young grass shoots are a potent source of nutrients,

rich in vitamins, minerals, trace elements and anti-oxidants –

which is the reason wheat grass has become so popular again

with health conscious people.

There is quite a difference however to the nutritional value of older

grass, which becomes much less valuable. Young grass shoots

(sprouts) are soft, and the cell walls are still digestible for dogs

and cats – if you watch them closely when they eat grass, you can

see them “mouthing” the grass, to check if the blades of grass

have rough edges (older grass develops quite sharp serrated

edges, and is indigestible).

once again helps them stay comfortable in hot conditions. A clip/trim in early to mid spring will see them through the summer and ensure that the coat thickens up again as the cooler months come around. Some of these dogs may benefit from a second clip mid summer.

With many of the small, designer dogs now on the market, grooming has become more time consuming than ever before. Many owners of these breeds do not have the time to manage the grooming of their dog due to other commitments and it tends to get out of hand. The dog ends up matted and uncomfortable.

Handing this responsibility over to your Pooch Mobile Operator will ensure that the dog’s coat is managed and that the health and wellbeing of the dog is maintained. Regular bathing and grooming between clips/trimming will help to alleviate matting and skin conditions. It is recommended dogs be bathed every 2-4 weeks.

Talk to your Pooch Mobile Operator about the best options to ensure your dog’s comfort during this coming summer.

What is quite interesting

is the fact that when dogs

and cats consume a raw

food diet, they become

more in tune with their

primal instincts, and people often comment that they see their

pets eating grass, which they never used to. It is also true,

that dogs and cats will eat grass when they are feeling sick

(nauseous), but in this situation they are not selective, and in

fact, ingest a large volume of the older grass shoots, which

is high in lignin and tannins, and will stimulate vomiting. This

is also a primal/evolutionary action designed to empty the

stomach when required.
