The cranes have arrived on site and we can say with confidence that something quite extraordinary is afoot…

Over the next eighteen months Bangor’s new Arts and Innovation Centre will grow before our very eyes and we can start to imagine the wealth of possibilities, opportunities and experiences that will be on offer for us within its walls.

In the meantime, the activity continues… We have a number of new initiatives on the go: the “Yma ac Acw” intergenerational storytelling project and BLAS, an after school arts project which aims to develop performance and film literacy skills in Hirael and Glancegin schools; we’ll also be giving 30 schools beyond Bangor the chance to share their HaDAsyniaDA /Seeds of Ideas for the Centre with us.

This season’s programme brings its spread of concerts, gigs, dramas, films and more. For those of you who missed the amazing theatrical experience Cerebellium last time round – it’s back, and this time open to 16 and overs. Grab your tickets while you can - you won’t be disappointed!

Finally, March 1st will be an important day in more ways than one this year, as this is when we reveal the name of our new Centre. In the New Year a panel of young people, students and representatives from all over Bangor will come together to consider your ideas – and to choose one name …

HOARDINGSIn the coming months, you’ll notice a lot more activity on the building site.

You’ll soon witness the arrival of our brand new hoardings. Extracts from our HaDAsyniaDA / IdeaSeeds poems will surround the site offering an insight into the many hopes and dreams of Bangor’s schoolchildren for the new centre.

FOUNDATION STONEOn January 11 2013 Welsh Education Minister Leighton Andrews will place the foundation stone for the new Arts and Innovation Centre on the site.

NEW PONTIO SHOPThis season Pontio will be opening its very own shop on the High Street. We’ll be based there right up until the doors of the new centre open.

NAMING THE NEW CENTREPontio would like to thank everyone for the numerous suggestions we received in the competition to name the new Arts & Innovation Centre. “An entertaining, but memorably cruel portrayal” (Eifion Glyn) of a sailor’s life in the 19th Century, focusing primarily on the Davies’ family of shipbuilders from Anglesey. The company was responsible for transporting hundreds of people, coal and goods from Liverpool and London to the four corners of the earth – and then returning with cargo of all sorts – more particularly guano from the remote islands of South-West America. But there was another side to the coin... Life was cheap and on tempestuous seas many lives were lost.

John Lawrence once a member of the Gorky’s, he now lives in the wilderness of Snowdonia, where he composes and records his quiet yet powerful songs.

Said to be the composer’s personal favourite, Suor Angelica is a tale full of mystery, drama and plot twists, but above all, a tale of uplifting religious redemption. This adaption by Bangor University Opera, under the artistic direction of Marian Bryfdir and stage direction of Andrew Agacy, is a celebration of music and language.

The performance accompanied by Bangor University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Chris Collins; and singers from around Bangor including the Bangor Community Choir, led by Pauline Down.

In Autumn 2012, Pontio held its first ever artistic residency at Plas Hedd residential home in Maesgeirchen, Bangor.

“The intention was not to go in as an entertainer, but rather to melt into the community at the home by offering musical creativity ‘on tap’”– artist in residence Manon Llwyd.

Join musician and composer Manon Llwyd, Pontio’s artistic director Elen ap Robert, and arts in health and lecturer in music, health and well being Dr Gwawr Ifan in a discussion about the experiences and lessons learnt at Plas Hedd. Watch poignant footage from the residency, talk to the creators of the project, and listen to extraordinarily touching experiences about the power of music.

An all day event dedicated to women everywhere, split into:

Morning Remembering forgotten women. Presentations on trafficked women; womanhood and disability; exploited women and a reading from Welsh author and prominent language activist, Angharad Tomos’ work on women and mental health.

Throughout the day Women’s Enterprise Fair featuring local women’s businesses, a wellbeing space, an information hub, a bookshop and women’s art exhibition.

Afternoon Exhibition of collaborative art project with sculptor Wanda Zyborska and photographer Glyn Davies which uses the language of surrealism to explore Zyborska’s experience of breast cancer, ageing and womanhood.

Closes with a provocation piece by Deborah Williams. Deborah is an intuitive, authentic, passionate and charming leader who as a journalist, reviewer and cultural commentator, is popular on the national and international, cultural and creative

circuits as well as the academic one. Her work in theatre is widely acknowledged for challenging perceptions of disability and difference.

After government testing on criminals in an Irish prison goes wrong, the criminals are shipped to a laboratory in London. On the voyage, the inmates turn into zombies, and attack the boat. They end up being washed up on Llanddwyn on the Isle of Anglesey, north Wales, where they feast on everything and everyone in sight. Will they make it over the Menai Bridge or will they be stopped in time?

ZOMBIES FROM IRELAND is a film produced and directed in Gwynedd. It’s the brainchild of musician Ryan Kift, co-ordinated through Facebook and uses local acting and technical talent. A popular programme presented by Wales’ leading sopranos Gwawr Edwards and Hannah Stone, official harpist to HRH Prince of Wales. Amongst the pieces performed by the duo will be Penillion Y Plant Geraint Lewis; Welsh Folk Songs Arrangements by William Mathias; selection of German and French songs and Spanish Dance by Manuel de Falla.

Gwawr, who is in high demand for concert and television work, has worked with Glyndebourne Festival Opera and is a guest artist on Bryn Terfel’s Christmas Album. Hannah was appointed harpist to the Prince of Wales in 2011 and has performed at prestigious venues nationally and internationally.

Dialogue and Conversations24 November – 12 January

Fibre Art Wales is launching a new touring exhibition Dialogue with its sister show Conversations. Members of the group have produced works portraying their personal response to the titles Dialogue and Conversations, producing a lively and varied body of work for the exhibitions ranging from thought provoking to light hearted, literal to abstract.

The exhibitions portray a wide diversity of fibre art, individual members of FAW have developed unique forms of practise and this is very apparent in the shows. Drawing on each artist’s in depth knowledge of their specialised skills a rich variety of 2 and 3D works have been produced using a host of techniques from quilt making, stitch, machine embroidery, weaving, Shibori, resin work, print, paper making to film.

Inside Welsh Homes19 January – 2 March

A new exhibition of images from the Royal Commission’s archive will offer a glimpse inside Welsh homes through time. The exhibition will feature images reproduced from negatives and prints held in the National Monuments Record of Wales (the Commission’s archive) in Aberystwyth; with almost 2 million images and 125,000 drawings it is the biggest visual archive in Wales.

The images will explore Welsh homes through the ages from humble cottages to grand country houses, and will be displayed alongside objects from the museum collection. The exhibition will be supported by the Royal Commission’s forthcoming book, Inside Welsh Homes, which will showcase about 200 key images from its vast archive.

Karina Rosanne Barrett19 January – 2 March

Llanberis based fine artist Karina Rosanne Barrett takes inspiration from the traditional dwellings of the area, particularly those found in extreme locations, nestled high in the hills, or perched on the edge of the Irish Sea. Working with acrylic on canvas, Karina aims to capture the ostensible charm of these challenging habitations.

The subjects of Karina Barrett’s paintings are directly inspired by her surroundings in Snowdonia where she lives and produces her work. “I have a peculiar interest in the traditional dwellings of the area, and the idea of them slowly being reclaimed by their landscape, weather and neglect. Many pieces are based on locations I often visit on Ynys Môn and Pen Llŷn.”

Open Art 20139 March – 20 April

The Open Art exhibition is a competition open to all artists over 18 who live or work in Wales. It is an opportunity for local artist to showcase their work to the public and there is always a wide variety of paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture. A panel of selectors decide on the final exhibition, with a selector’s prize for the winner. The public get a chance to vote for their favourite work, which receives the ‘People’s Prize’, donated by the Friends of the Gwynedd Museum & Art Gallery at the end of the exhibition.

From Trysorfa to Sali MaliNovember 24 – 16 March

From the earliest Calvanistic magazines of the 1840s, to ‘Llyfr Mawr y Plant’ and the works of Sali Mali, this exhibition showcases books from the Centre for Children’s Literature, established in Bangor University’s library at the Normal site. The exhibition will offer glimpses into the development of Welsh languageliterature for children and how these books continue to contribute to Welsh identity. BY PHONE Bookings for Pontio events (those listed on pages two and three) can be made by telephone where indicated on: 01248 382828. Our telephone bookings line is run in partnership with the Wales Millennium Centre and operates a fully bilingual service from Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm.

IN PERSON Advance tickets for Pontio events can be purchased at Palas Print Pendref (events listed on pages two and three).

ONLINE Online booking is available for selected Pontio events (those listed on pages two and three) at: www.pontio.co.uk. This service will close four hours prior to the event, or at 5pm of the previous day if the event takes place in the morning.

POSTAL CHARGE No booking fee will be charged when you buy tickets, but a 50 pence mailing charge will apply if you request tickets by post. Tickets by post can only be requested until 10 days before the event to ensure they reach you on time. After this, all pre-bought tickets can be collected on the door.

CONCESSIONS Wherever ‘concessions’ is denoted for Pontio events, the following categories are included in that definition: children under 16 years of age, students and those over 65. Carers and children under 2 go free.

REFUNDS Unfortunately, once tickets have been purchased, we are unable to refund them unless the performance is cancelled. Any tickets unsold in advance will be available to buy on the door.

congratulates Bangor Youth Group (BYGs Bangor) – Voted winners of National Theatre Wales’s SUPERASSEMBLY Programme!

Since July 2012, BYGS BANGOR have been building the foundations of an exciting new project. They want to establish a venue in Bangor that provides a safe space for young people from all social backgrounds to interact with friends without fear of being moved on. The venue will also act as a gateway for young people to access a range of workshops and activities to help them explore their interests and to develop new skills.
