Welcome to Pontardawe Festival 2017!!!Now one of the oldest running music festivals in the country. The Festival

started many moons ago in the town venues, then went through various guises and ‘fields’. It is now back based in the town. With a street market, street parade, free street entertainment, on the dome stage and the bandstand, and the usual free music entertainment in the local venues. The festival has become a mainstay in the local event calendar. You may notice the flags that adorn our streets this year. They have been designed and made by children in local schools, and depict the culture and history of Pontardawe.

Swansea Canal Society will be running boat trips on the canal this year on Saturday, near Herbert Street bridge, see the town from a different aspect, on the water! St. Peter’s Flower Festival will have their beautiful stained glass windows decorated with flower displays. Open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, always a lovely, tranquil place to visit on Festival weekend, with plenty of cakes, tea and coffee to refresh you!

The traditional weekend warmup bands start on Thursday, in the Other Place and The Gwachel, (Pontardawe Inn).

The weekend then proper kicks in on Friday, with ‘Jac y Do’ playing outside the Arts Centre, and all the local venues hosting a wide range of live music.

Saturday has our traditional dance groups keeping you entertained on the streets. You can catch them from 11am, and they will literally dance anywhere. Favourite spots are the bandstand at lower Herbert Street, and the paved area opposite the Cross. The food and craft market opens at 11am on Herbert Street, alongside the Arts Centre outdoor stage.

At 1.30pm on Saturday the Dance Parade will start marching from the top of the town, down High Street, then along Herbert Street, culminating at the Arts Centre, where the various groups will perform inside and outside. The bandstand at the bottom of Herbert Street, will play host to local up and coming singers and bands, and children’s rides will be situated in the town centre car park.We are immensely proud to play host to the amazing “Fromage en Feu”, on our mainstage, outside the Arts Centre from 7pm. These guys offer the best in World Music, a heady mix of Balkan, Klezmer, and a few things in between! Be sure not to miss them. The music will continue late into the night, at all venues.

Sunday is often described as the people’s favourite day of the Festival. This year from 1pm at the arts centre stage we have, playing the best of 80’s Ska music, “Skacasm”. From Madness to Bad Manners they guarantee, you will know and love every tune. Then from 3pm the big band soul sound of “Gimme Some Lovin”, will close the street entertainment, with their usual ‘get up and dance’ soul classics.

Kind sponsorship of this year’s programme comes from Mike L. JamesAlso thanks to the continuing support of The Pontardawe Arts Centre,

and Pontardawe Town Council, to all the local venues who put on their own live music during the weekend, and most importantly the volunteers who bring it all together. Pontardawe would not be Pontardawe without a music Festival on the third weekend of August, many thanks to all who support the event and we hope you have a great weekend!

Proceeds from the street collection will this year go to The Morriston Chest Fund. This is in honour of very long standing fan and volunteer of Gwyl Pontardawe Festival, Martin Hunt, who passed away recently. From the very earliest days of the Festival, right up to last year’s event, Martin was never short of some integral words of wisdom, as well as a helping hand. May he rest in peace,....and music.

And below, a blast from the past........
