NORTH BATTLEFORD - EARLY HISTORY

The eighteenth century fashion decreedthat the European dandy wore a beaver hatand his lady wore a cloak of otter, muskrat orlynx. The beaver hat was seldom seen or evenmore rarely worn by the men of the buckskin-clad trading brigades who followed the greatriver highways into the interior of what to-dayare the Battlefords.

Henry Kelsey was the first to travel inlandin the 1690's from the Hudson Bay to exploreand encourage Indians to come to the Baywiththeir furs. La Verendrve soon followed and hereached the forks of the Saskatchewan Riverin 1749. Anthony Henday, 1754-1755, trav-elled the length of the North SaskatchewanRiver and passed through what is now theBattlefords country.

In addition to the fur trade, gold lured mento the Saskatchewan River which passesthrough the Battlefords. Gold seekers camefrom Minnesota, United States, and from theRed River Settlement from 1857 to 1862.

In 1876, Battleford was the proposed lineof the Canadian Pacific Railway, as was theDominion Telegraph line, going west. Also,Battleford was selected as the Capital of theNorth-West Territories, and remained sofrom 1876 to 1883, when it was moved toRegina.

North Battleford got its existence throughthe re-routing of the railway line throughNorth Battleford instead of Battleford.
